About

Develop characters who are irresistibly drawn to each other.

Build a world that keeps them apart.

Pull from the tower to find out what happens.

Star Crossed is a two-player game about really, really wanting to, when you really, really can’t.

Playing Star Crossed will feel like being pulled in two directions at once–like when your head and heart are telling you two different things, or when what you want and what you believe in are impossible to reconcile. The game is simple, quick, and filled with delicious moments of excitement, tension, and occasional heartbreak.

Will you be best friends about to graduate and move to different cities? A Queen and her knight errant? Leaders of the Vampire and Werewolf clans? A space pirate and an alien brain parasite? The possibilities are endless.

(“Star crossed”, by the way, is an old-timey term for being “thwarted by a malign star,” meaning destined to be together but denied by an unkind universe. Think Romeo and Juliet... but you can tell a way better story than that.)

Actual Play

  • She’s A Super Geek - Phil and Senda play a cyberpunk city's Emergency Medical System and her flustered programmer
  • Heart Points Pod - Zack and Diana play a simple asteroid miner and her spaceship's--you guessed it--artificially intelligent operating system.
  • Party of One - Jeff and Alex herself play a "match" made in heaven: two pro wrestlers with a powerful rivalry that leaves much unspoken.
  • More to come!

From the Designer

In Star Crossed, you and your fellow player will craft characters who are powerfully attracted to each other, but have a compelling reason not to act on their feelings. You’ll watch the attraction between them grow as you play out scenes, taking turns describing what your character says and does. Some of the things you’ll want your character to do are going to increase that attraction—and when that happens, you are going to pull a brick out from an increasingly shaky tower and place it on the top.

If the tower falls, your characters act on their feelings! You decide what happens; the rules will tell you what that means. How many bricks you've pulled will help determine if your love is doomed, triumphant, or something in-between.

Of course, that tower may never fall. If you make it through the final scene and the tower is still standing, the character never act on their feelings. Sometimes that's the right thing to do.

Star Crossed takes about two hours to play. You'll need the rules, the cards, some character sheets and a couple pencils. And a tower of bricks, of course.

“The stories are sweet, sad, and sexy as hell. Playing feels like falling in love. I have only played one game so far, but it left a profound impression on me. It’s one of those games that proves how beautiful roleplaying is as an art form. Also, there is kissing.” James D’Amato, The ONE SHOT Podcast Network

"It has an elegantly light system that prepares players to jump right in and create romantic narrative knots that will have you battling the butterflies in your stomach to keep your hands steady enough to make your big move." – Mo Turkington, Unruly Designs

“What I find genuinely surprising about the design—and what draws me to it—is not just how well the metaphor fits; but how the metaphor veers from that of Dread. Hiding in the gravity of that teetering tower is not the grisly finality of well-swung hammer or the existential threat of eternal void, but something far more terrifying: real human desire.” Epidiah Ravachol, creator of Dread

"The hottest game I've ever played." – Sara Williamson, creator of Shelter and co-creator of 183 Days

With any edition of the game, you'll get immediate access to a current draft of the rules and credit for helping us make this game a dream come true. When we get a new Kickstarted game, the first thing we do is flip to the back of the book and look for our name—a tangible sign that we helped make something cool happen. As a Star Crossed backer you are definitely making something cool happen, and we're definitely putting your name in the final version. So go ahead and look for it first thing!

Prices do not include shipping or customs!

Shipping boxed games can be expensive, and shipping and customs costs are always changing. We’re cautious about the possibility of overcharging some of you, so rather than set flat rates by country, we’ll be adding shipping costs when your package is ready, though Backerkit. This will get you the most accurate rate based on the time we send and your location.

If you need a rough estimate based on current rates, get in touch with us, either here on Kickstarter or by email to info@bullypulpitgames.com.

Star Crossed is already nearly complete—we’ve spent a couple of years playtesting, refining, and editing the game. Jess Fink is hard at work on the game’s art and the rules have been laid out. We’re down to the finishing touches, but this is going to be a big, beautiful game, and we need your help to make sure it’s as high quality as possible. While we’ve printed a boxed game before (Ghost Court!), Star Crossed is on a whole new level. For starters, we’re sourcing a wooden brick tower to our specifications. The initial production costs will be higher. While our partner AdMagic’s expertise will ensure high quality, your support makes the volume we need practical. We cannot do this without you.

Star Crossed is a game that will definitely benefit from word of mouth! If you back this Kickstarter at any level you’ll get immediate access to the pre-release draft of the rules, and we’re pretty sure you’ll love them. Please enjoy, and tell your friends!

REACHED! $30,000 - Star Crossed Story Time

It's time to put Alex's famously soothing voice to work. We'll release a mini-series of fireside chats with two people who played and loved Star Crossed. You'll get to hear their story, what they loved about the game, and what they can't wait to play next!

$32,500 - The Wizard's Tower

We'll offer an exclusive reward level: the Beloved Edition, with an additional one-of-a-kind hand-painted tower by fantasy artist Rachel Kahn. One side of this unique tower will be a puzzle you can assemble for play or display! We hope you like wizards.

More goals will be revealed as we hit the ones we've announced.

Star Crossed was designed and written by Alex Roberts, a writer, game designer, former Gen Con Industry Insider, and host of the acclaimed Backstory podcast on the ONE SHOT network.

Star Crossed was developed by Jason Morningstar and Steve Segedy. Together, we are Bully Pulpit Games, and we've been creating and publishing award-winning games such as the Night Witches, The Warren, and Fiasco since 2006. This is our fifth Kickstarter campaign.

Ignatz Award-winning illustrator and comic artist Jess Fink is our artist on Star Crossed. Her work embraces the personal, the bittersweet, and the downright raunchy, and she is best known for her time-traveling memoir We Can Fix It and her erotic robotic Victorian romance Chester 5000 XYV, both published through Top Shelf Comics.

Brennen Reece created the layout and visual design for Star Crossed. Brennen is an essential part of the BPG team and has helped us create a number of great games including Night Witches, The Warren, and The Skeletons

Our eagle-eyed editor is Karen Twelves, who has worked with us on multiple projects, refining our voice and catching our slip-ups every time.

Banana Chan is our video producer and GIF master extraordinaire. She makes us look good.

Thank you for checking out the project and for helping us bring this game to life.

If you can’t back us right now, remember that telling a friend, or sharing on your social media channels, is a big help too!

We're very excited about this project and we hope that you are too. If you have any questions for us, please let us know: info@bullypulpitgames.com.

Risks and challenges

Bully Pulpit Games has a long track record of successfully producing high-quality games. This project is modeled on our previous successful Kickstarter projects, so we know how to manage the challenges of a campaign and deliver rewards on time.

PRINTING

We learned a lot from printing Ghost Court, and we’re happy to say we’ll be working with the seasoned pros at AdMagic to handle interactions with our printer. That said, while we don't expect any problems, shipping from overseas means that there is always a slight risk that a cargo ship will be late and things will be delayed by a month or so. We will keep you informed!

FULFILLMENT

We'll be using the same local fulfillment service as we have for all of our previous campaigns, allowing us to inspect and assemble the rewards before they are packed for shipment. Inevitably a few shipments will get lost or damaged—particularly those going overseas—but we'll be following those shipments closely and making sure backers get what they ordered!

TRANSPARENCY

Finally, we're committed to keeping you informed and being transparent about the process. If anything does go wrong, we'll let you know right away and tell you how we're going to fix it.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let us know!
