All Donations are Tax-Deductible!
The Bull City Sculpture Show is the vision of a community based non-profit organization in Durham, N.C.
We at Liberty Arts Sculpture Studio and Foundry, want to bring twelve awe-inspiring outdoor sculptures from across the U.S. to Downtown Durham next May, and we need your support!
This will be a world-class collection presented for six months free of charge to all visitors. And all will be within walking distance of Durham Central Park.
One sculpture will be purchased for Durham and displayed here permanently. In addition, a People’s Choice Award will stay in the city on loan for one year.
With at least one sculpture added from each future annual exhibition, the Bull City Sculpture Show will soon put Durham on the map as a hot spot not just for our food, music, film, start-ups, grit and cool people, but also as a destination for great outdoor works of art.
Here’s how you can help!
In order to put out a national call for artists in November, The Bull City Sculpture Show needs $45,000. Most of that money (75%) will go to the participating artists to defray the costs of transporting their sculptures to and from Durham. The rest is earmarked for award money and sculpture show events including an Opening Gala and a bronze pour.
Liberty Arts has been hard at work already and has raised nearly $20,000 in donations and pledges. And the Duke Tower Hotel and Condominiums has donated twelve complimentary hotel rooms for participating artists (Thank you, Valerie Blettner!).
Our Kickstarter campaign is crucial to raise the remaining $25,000 necessary to keep us moving towards our goal of bringing great art to a great city.
Note: Liberty Arts sculptors will be helping with the exhibition, but not participating in the competition.
WHERE DID THE IDEA COME FROM?
In true Durham fashion, the Bull City Sculpture Show is a grassroots effort originating within our non-profit arts community, which was founded in 2001. Liberty Arts operates both a sculpture studio near historic Golden Belt and the only non-profit foundry on the East Coast in Durham Central Park.
That foundry was the birthplace of Major the Bull, the much-photographed sculpture in City Plaza. (Yeah, we’ve seen you and Major on Instagram!) Liberty Artists, Mike Waller and Leah Foushee Waller created the massive beast in a series of public bronze pours in 2003. Ever since then, Liberty Artists, inspired by Mike’s commitment and enthusiasm, have envisioned the makings of the Bull City Sculpture Show.
Durham has always been known for its diversity and gritty history. Now we’re hipper and hotter than ever and we want everyone to know.
All that’s missing is one piece of the puzzle - the permanent visual symbols of pride and vitality that help define a city - large outdoor sculptures.
Durham is ready and you can be part of that effort!

Risks and challenges
Since Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing proposition, obviously the biggest risk is not making our goal. That would force us to delay the Bull City Sculpture Show.
