About this project
MYRTLE BECKLE, otherwise known as a vegetable nerd, uses her birthday money to purchase broccoli seeds in hopes of one day becoming a scientist. With the aid of her friend, the robin, she plants these seeds in her backyard and later discovers her mother’s dream. Unfortunately, the vegetable patrol has banned all kids on Sugarbird Lane from eating any vegetables which causes this quirky nerd to take matters into her own hands. They constantly mock Myrtle for her fascination with broccoli, unaware that their president, Blabbermouth Samantha, is a secret broccoli lover. While dodging their antics, ten-year-old Myrtle must embark on this new quest to change the world.
This humorous, educational and inspiring chapter book, filled with secret clubs, rivalry, broccoli experiments and more, proves that the voice of a child should never be ignored.

Meet Myrtle Beckle, Our Main Character
Likes: My favorite color is green and I love to eat grilled broccoli and cheese sandwiches. Actually, I love broccoli with everything. My best friend is the robin who hangs out in my backyard and I love all subjects especially Reading.
Dislikes: I do not like the NEVC (No Eating Vegetable Club) because they do not eat their vegetables. The color pink looks like vomit and it makes me sad when Papa forgets Mr. Doodlebug. I especially do not like Maria Diarrhea because she smells like.......well, you just have to find out for yourself.
What is Little Kids, Big Voices?
Broccoli Chronicles is the first book in the Little Kids, Big Voices series which highlight different children and their unique gifts. This humorous, educational and inspiring book series will encourage more children to devote their time to reading.
What is Building Voices?
Building Voices is an independent publishing company that specializes in Children's Fiction and related resources for home and school. In 2011, Taneeka Bourgeois-daSilva founded this organization in efforts to encourage, entertain and motivate children around the world through reading. Our mission is to build soft voices into outspoken leaders.
Why Should I Back This Project?
1. Because you are a visionary and believe all great ideas should be manifested.
2. Because you want to support a new publishing company that publishes Children's Fiction.
3. Because you are tired of illiteracy and want more children to read.
4. Because Broccoli Chronicles is an interesting book and you can't wait to read it.
What Inspired This Project?
I've been a teacher for over ten years and one of the major issues that children face is their inability and lack of passion to read. I've discovered that reading builds character and character opens the door to more creativity. We must change the mindset of our children at any early age by incorporating reading into their daily regimen. It's never too early to start building a stable foundation of reading for your child. My newborn loves when I read various stories to her. Sometimes, I simply put the book in her lap and let her explore the pages.
Why is Reading so Important?
How Funds Will Be Used
With your help, we can finish the last major stage of publishing our first book, Little Kids, Big Voices: Broccoli Chronicles for December 2014. The funds will allow us to hire an editor to proofread our manuscript before sending it off to print. The other portion of the funds will be used for backer rewards.
If we exceed our fundraising goal, then we will be able to conduct a third round of editing. Also, we can produce at least 2-5 more illustrations. If we supersede our goal, then we can acquire new authors and publish even more fantastic books in addition to possibly using offset printing versus print on demand services.
Thank you for all of your support :-)
