TALES FROM THE BUG WHISPERER (The Kids Series)
Project delivery date - Earth Day 2013
Tales from the Bug Whisperer is a video series for kids about the world of invertebrates. It was the vision of award winning film producers, entertainers and educators Antonio Gustin (the Bug Whisperer) and Paul Hildenbrand. They went on to create WHO WANTS TO BE AN ENTOMOLOGIST? as a pilot to the series in 2006. The video was simply created to show what could be accomplished without a budget. It went on to receive 5 international film festival awards! Two of those awards were for Creative Approach. It also got the attention of Discovery Channel, Nat Geo and the Letterman Show.
FROM PAUL & TONY - "We are in the business of empowering youth. We open doors of opportunity to budding naturalists that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. We show them how to replace fear and malice for what they don’t understand with curiosity and respect.
This is our business and we do it well."
We've now come to kickstarter to create 5 more 30min episodes in the series (truly making it a series). Tales from the Bug Whisperer videos are designed for grades 2-6. The videos are imaginative, informative, fast and a lot of fun to watch with great special fx. The mission of all these videos is "action." We inspire our viewers to watch and then go do. The world of invertebrates is outdoors not in (at least we hope that is your case). They are filled with practical useful information that can be applied as soon as one hits his or her own backyard.
None of this can happen without your support! We are an independent team of educators and film producers that have our own vision of what this series needs to be. We won't do the "reality" genre that has been done to death. We believe as Albert Einstein did that "Imagination is more important than knowledge." But hey! Why not combine the two? What would it be like if bugs were as big as we are? What would it be like if we were as small as bugs? Support this project and find out the answers!
Why a budget this time? Well like I said in the video we did the first one on mere tenacity and home video cameras. This time around though we want to create our vision in the production value it deserves. This costs money and 5 videos is a considerable amount of filming and special fx to apply and this takes a great deal of time in post production. The technology has also advance far beyond what was available to us at the time we created the first video. When producing a video for kids they know technology better than adults do. They are so visually stimulated that its almost a necessity to deliver it in the highest format possible. Then there is also the challenge of filming outdoors and traveling back and forth from Midwest to Southwest trying to capture insects at their peak appearance time. Its a challenge we look forward to but again its one we can't accomplish without your support.
When this project is started you will be able to follow its progress on our blog site TALESFROMTHEBUGWHISPERER.COM, our FACEBOOK PAGE and YOUTUBE site. We will keep you up to date on new developments, great discoveries, ideas we're employing and all the steps behind the special fx process. The making of these videos is probably even more interesting than the content within. Now that I think of it maybe we'll produce a bonus DVD of just that process. Don't want to make promises because there is an overwhelming amount of work to do but I will keep that idea under consideration... mostly because I just thought of it.
Just a little trivia for yourself - as you watch WHO WANTS TO BE AN ENTOMOLOGIST? see if you can spot all the movies we gave a little tip of the hat to. Some have been suggested that I have to admit were unintentional but there are quite a few we planted for the viewers benefit. It wasn't all just for kids. Post your discoveries on our facebook page. We will definitely continue this through out the rest of the series... Simpson style if you will.
Thank you all again for taking the time to checkout our project!

WHAT OTHERS SAY
School Library Journal
”This is a child-friendly production—humorous, occasionally gross, and fascinating ..Science at its best!”
"Tony Gustin is simply one of the best
science educators/entertainers I have ever seen. His ability to connect with
kids and get them excited about whatever he's excited about is amazing to see.
Kid's love his shows. His enthusiasm is infectious. If one in ten teachers in
our schools could make kids science as easily as he can, there would be no
science crisis in the world today.
I am delighted to be able to give Tony my highest
