Bug-Off: battle your friends in nature.
Command teams of battling bugs, to capture your opponent’s flag.
My name is Tom Hall. I am an avid lover of board games and I have been designing and playing games for four or however many years. I also love nature and the wilderness. I live in a small town in Scotland and I spend much of my free time exploring the countryside around me: fields, woodlands, beaches and even the grounds of ancient castles. Last year I started working on a way to combine these two passions. I was playing board games with my family and I noticed a problem. Why aren't there more outdoor games that include the strategy, skills and fun that we enjoy in the board games we play at home? This inspired me to create Bug-Off and share it with the world.
What is Bug-Off?
Bug-Off is a tactile, tactical, game of outdoor warfare for 2-4 players, in which players command teams of battling bugs, eager to capture the opponent’s flag. It is a tense game of capture the flag, in which knowing how to manipulate the real world landscape is key to defeating your opponent. The Bug-Off game changes depending on where you choose to play, meaning your explorations in real life are represented in the game. Bug-Off includes everything you need to battle your friends in nature. You’ll get a copy of our extensively play tested rulebook, 21 wooden team tokens, 20 custom made stat cards, 4 blue dice, a high quality cloth tape measure and a sturdy cloth bag for storage and transportation.
Playing Bug-Off Bug-Off is an incredibly simple, child-friendly game, in which teams of bugs dart frantically between bases attempting to steal three flags from the opponent so that they can control the surrounding area. Bug-Off is designed for ages 7 and up and it can support between two and four players.
Playing one game takes about 30 - 45 minutes. There are four different teams in Bug-Off, based on real insects. Each team has its own distinct playing style and reacts in a unique way to a variety of real world terrains. Do you prefer to command a small team of elite warriors or do you trust in strength in numbers? Your brutal bugs are represented on customisable wooden discs, allowing your bugs to balance on even the most precarious perches and withstand the the most treacherous terrain.
Speaking of terrain… one of the best things about Bug-Off is where you play it. Instead of playing on cardboard or foam, you get to battle your friends on the beach, in the woods, on a playing field or wherever you take the game! This mean we can offer a guarantee that we give you the most realistic looking terrain that money can buy.
What we’ll deliver If we achieve our crowdfunding goals, we will be able to make and dispatch 100 copies of Bug-Off. We’ve got some really cool stretch goals in mind if we make it past our goal so keep your ears open for those! We’ve already come a long way on the Bug-Off journey.
This past year all my free time has been spent writing rules, play testing, rewriting rules, finding suppliers, inspecting component quality, pulling together budgets and making plans. I’ve tried this game out with everyone I know and I know it’s ready for you and your friends and family to have fun with in nature. I hope you can see how simple and fun an alternative to the classic indoor board game this is: I want to inspire more people to go into nature and play - or even design - outdoor board games.
Risks and challenges
This is my first public game, but I have been extra careful when preparing so I can protect you from any of the standard issues.
Production: We are not creating any custom made components, and each of our suppliers has enough stock to supply us with plenty of parts. All components (excepting the rule cards and the rule book) have to ship from abroad. This means that we have had to build in extra time into our production schedule to ensure that our estimated arrival date is realistic. The rule cards and the rule book are being printed here in the UK. We trust our printers and have received samples, but have back up options if there are any serious issues.
Playability: I have play tested this game more times than I can count and made many improvements and corrections over the months. I have play tested it with lots of other people and gamer groups. I have also extensively edited the rulebook, repairing continuity errors and typos. Thank you for reading - I hope you like Bug-Off!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
