About

Untangle the Science of Sleep

The BodyEcho device offers the most accurate and powerful mobile sleep tracking solution available.

While other sleep devices and applications may only measure your movement in bed, the BodyEcho uses proprietary sensor technology to give you clear insights into sleep stages (light, deep, REM), unconscious disturbances in your sleep, sleeping position, interruption of breathing, changes in blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), tossing and turning, heart rate, and snoring.

By using technology previously available only in sleep labs, the BodyEcho device can help you achieve your best sleep.

Your sleep data is displayed as an easy to understand mobile app and companion web portal, listening to your body - even while your mind rests. Using the BodyEcho, you can develop better sleeping habits - that will allow you to feel more energized and healthful.

We've spent two years developing our sensor technology but need your help to make it a reality. With your help and the Kickstarter community, we will finish our mobile and web applications, finalize our production design, and deliver the first BodyEcho units.

Who is it for?

The BodyEcho is for everyone who wants to take true control of their sleep. Hyperachievers, parents, grandparents, or even plugged-in teenagers can all benefit.

Listen to a podcast with inventor & OxiRate founder Boris Tverskoy as he talks to Matt Ward of artofthekickstart.com about creating the BodyEcho sensor, his background in telecommunications and medical devices, as well as the merging of technology and community for empowering and enriching our lives. The BodyEcho in 4 Easy Steps:

Ready: Place the BodyEcho sensor on your forehead comfortably secured with the accessory headband

Set: Select "Sleep Mode" on the application

Go: Sleep

Review: When you wake up, the BodyEcho app and web portal will have your sleep analysis waiting for you!

We've been hard at work, and are now ready to share the first glimpse of OxiRate's web portal that will collect, store, analyze and present your data in real-time.

Click on the link below to see our interactive portal demonstration which uses real data captured with our BodyEcho sensor.

The BodyEcho is in active development, and we have come a long way so far. We have an accurate and functioning heart and oxygen sensor, hardware and firmware for collecting data and sending it to a device and server. Alpha versions of our application are running on the web and mobile devices - capturing Bluetooth data in real-time. We are currently finalizing our design prototypes for the final enclosure and headband, setting up back-end functionality, and SDK development.

Presenting the project. Heart rate up, Oxygen stable!

The team had the terrific opportunity to present the underlying technology behind the BodyEcho device at the Stanford Medicine X Conference in Palo Alto.

Stanford Study:

Alongside improving our consumer product and applications, we are working hard to prove our device in the medical and research fields. Our device (the very same sensor in the BodyEcho) will be used in several trials at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto - monitoring patient vitals after surgery and during sleep. We are continuing to work with our colleagues at Stanford and will keep our page updated with any future studies or trials.

Early Concepts:

Looking Forward to HealthKit:

We wholeheartedly welcome Apple's recent announcement of the HealthKit API platform, promising to combine health applications and peripherals into one easy-to-use dashboard. We can't wait to finish our application and explore how it will work together in interesting ways with the platform.

Since sharing the idea for our product with our fellow developers, we’ve received much interest to open up our platform and offer an SDK for them to create their own applications for the BodyEcho device.

Whether creating your own, more powerful solution to analyze the sensor data, or making an entirely new application we haven’t even considered yet - from lucid dreaming, to polyphasic sleep, to neural gaming - (one of our team members is convinced that this would make an awesome lie detector, too!), we will place the same tools that we use directly into your hands.

Regardless of whether your make your own applications or not, we firmly believe in your ownership of your own sleep data, and the ability to save, export, and analyze the data however you see fit.

Supporters at the Developer tier will receive storage and access to raw, unfiltered sensor data - frequently ~100 samples per second - which can be used for the most delicate scientific and research applications.

At the core of the BodyEcho device is a laboratory-grade oximeter which measures your heart rate and oxygen level to the highest degree of precision available in consumer sleep sensors, combining it with an accelerometer which senses both small vibrations such as snoring, and larger movements like turning from side to side. Our device's uniqueness comes from its incredible portability and comprehensiveness.

Sleep sensing technology isn't new, but to date most similar devices have focused on either body movement or eye movement tracking to determine REM cycles. With the BodyEcho, we are taking our understanding of the body one step further and analyzing vital signs directly with a particular focus on oxygen and breathing.

We have been developing our oxygen sensor technology for two years with the help of funding from friends, family, and a few angel investors. After much engineering, testing, and planning, we are getting ready to move our product through the final development steps and into your hands.

Your funding will be used to help us move through the final iterations of our production design and hardware prototype (making it pretty), software engineering for the iOS, Android, and web applications, and the manufacturing costs for the funders’ (yours!) batch of devices.

Design - both software and hardware, engineering, and manufacturing is an expensive process, and our funding goal has been set to allow us to ship the most capable and functional device and service that we can. Your help will accelerate us towards this goal.

Your contribution matters to us, and so does your voice - so please, tell your friends!

If you find this project interesting, please consider supporting us in making it a reality!

To date, consumer sleep tracking devices have lacked the ability to track the user's oxygen or breathing rate - with such technology being relegated to the sleep lab. BodyEcho brings this capability home to demystify this essential part of the body's function during sleep.

Combining oxygen with more commonly-tracked factors like heart rate enables you to better analyze your sleep quality, track any disturbances, and understand the stages of sleep.

Founded in 2010 by group of hardware professionals (technical and medical experts), OxiRate conducts research and development in the field of non-invasive and remote health-monitoring systems. Risks and challenges

Our sensor technology is proven and highly functional, but there are risks involved with every consumer project. Using our experience in the industry, we are confident that we will be able to finish the physical product and applications, and ship it to funders on-budget. Our hardware production team has years of experience in the design and scalable manufacture of products, and a track record of successfully delivering those products to market. Our biggest challenge ahead will be designing an excellent application to analyze and present your sleep data in interesting and compelling ways. In this regard, we look forward to having open and frequent communication with our backers, soliciting and incorporating your feedback in our development process.
