Bookselling Without Borders 2018

$22,894

Bookselling Without Borders is bringing you the world through books.

We invite you to be part of our growing community.

Booksellers provide an essential link between authors and the American reader. The more opportunities they have to engage meaningfully with international authors, agents, and publishers the greater the benefits to readers.

2018 BWB fellows in Turin in May for the Salone del Libro
2018 BWB fellows in Turin in May for the Salone del Libro

Since 2016, Bookselling Without Borders (BWB) has been providing American booksellers with fellowships to attend international book fairs. At these fairs, booksellers take part in presentations, panel discussions, and seminars exploring current trends in international writing; they visit local bookstores to meet managers and booksellers; they tour local literary arts organizations; they meet publishers, editors, authors, agents, and trade association representatives from around the world. And, importantly, they spend time exchanging ideas with each other. When they return from these trips they are more effective advocates for international voices.

Becoming familiar with multiple and diverse cultural perspectives is more important now than ever. Booksellers are a vital link.

Become a part of the Bookselling Without Borders community by choosing one of many unique rewards and by doing so you will be helping to put more diverse and international books into the hands of readers.

Last year, BWB received almost 500 applications from booksellers at all stages of their careers at over 260 stores in 44 states. Twelve scholarships were awarded to three fairs—Turin (May), Frankfurt (October), and Guadalajara (November).

There are so many more opportunities for booksellers to engage with the international book scene and so many more ways that they can enrich your experience as a reader.

In 2019, plans to award 16 fellowships, sending booksellers to fairs in 5 countries on 4 continents. We are also establishing a residency program that will allow U.S. booksellers to spend up to two weeks overseas working in a local bookstore and taking a deep dive into the regional book industry. BWB alumni are helping us develop a database of contacts and resources that can be shared with all booksellers, encouraging the entire bookselling community to become more effective advocates for international and diverse voices.

BWB promotes bibliodiversity, cultural diversity, and access to multiple new perspectives.

Bookselling Without Borders is having a positive impact on the culture of reading in this country by encouraging booksellers to introduce new and exciting international voices to American readers.

To continue with this valuable initiative this we invite you to join our community by choosing from among the great rewards below and backing BWB now.

The BWB Community of Partners Devoted to a More Diverse and International Book Market in America includes the following publishers, industry leaders, and bookstores:

Frankfurter Buchmesse, Ingram Content Group, Shelf Awareness.

Risks and challenges

Founded in 2016, Bookselling Without Borders has grown to become a widely known and respected opportunity for professional booksellers at all stages of their careers and for veteran buyers, managers, and bookstore owners.

In its first year the program offered one fellowship to one international book fair and was supported by two publishers. In 2019 thirteen publishers (all independent or university presses) will be working together to send a total of 20 booksellers to international book fairs in Italy, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, and India.

BWB will also in 2019 announce an international bookstore residency program and the rollout of an online resource hub for booksellers interested in improving the sales of international books at their stores.

There are always challenges in achieving success in ambitious programs like this. However with our network of publisher, bookstore, and industry partners, with an experienced and dedicated leadership team, with a solid year-to-year growth record, and with the aid of an expanding and enthusiastic base of backers on Kickstarter, BWB is well positioned to succeed in achieving its specific program objectives and also its general mission of supporting a more diverse literary landscape.
