About this project
I am very humbled by the outpouring of support for this project. What started out as "Bryce and Tim record a CD" has become a great story about community, education, and sharing an incredible piece of music with a broader audience. Thank you for your support!
Any additional pledges about the goal will help with post-production costs such as distribution and promotion, so pre-order your copy now through April 1 so you can be a part of the behind-the-scenes experience of this recording project!
My name is Bryce Westervelt, and I am an opera singer. At the beginning of the year I set three ambitious career goals for 2010:
1. Move to Germany
2. Give a recital tour to help me pay for my move to Germany
3. Fulfill the dream of recording a debut CD
When I meet new people on my travels or around town and I tell them that I’m a professional singer, they often ask me to either sing a couple of bars or ask me if I have a CD. Unfortunately, I have always had to make up some "lame excuse" as to why I haven't recorded. I have been waiting for years to be in the right situation to record. I look forward for the day when I can finally say "Yep, I sure do... do you want to hear it?"
10 years ago, while in graduate school at the University of Maryland, my good friend and colleague, Tim McReynolds and I learned and performed one of the greatest works of the classical art song repertoire, Franz Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin. A decade later, having grown both personally and artistically, it is time for me to revisit the work and perhaps even record it. Click here to hear an excerpt of Tim and me performing the piece
Of course, making a quality recording of this masterpiece is more than just fulfilling a selfish dream of finally recording a CD, but it is also a way to share this music and my life's work with my family, friends, colleagues, mentors, and fans who have worked with, supported, guided, and shared with me through the years. It is these people who have shaped me into the artist and person I am today.
Unfortunately, making this dream a reality costs money. Things like a world-class pianist, recording venue, sound engineer, mastering, and duplication don't come cheap. Making the quality recording that I want, and the listeners deserve can be quite cost prohibitive....or so I thought until now...
Kickstarter.com combined with your generosity and enthusiasm can bring this project to life. For those of you who help me out on the project, I have come up with some backer rewards ranging from an advanced copy of the CD and behind-the-scenes access to the project to your very own private recital or Liederabend. (the fancy German word for song evening) You can see a list of all of these things here on the Kickstarter website. Remember, every penny counts toward making this CD happen!
So thanks for checking out my project, pledging, and sharing this project with your friends that might be interested too. Most of all, thank you for helping me fulfill my dream of recording and sharing this music with you!
PS I am thrilled to tell you Tim McReynolds, who you hear on the video has agreed to collaborate on this project with me.
