Adventures Great and Glorious is a book I've literally been trying to write for more than seven years. I first announced on my blog that I was working on rules for high-level games, with domains, factions, and so forth. I made no fewer than three full-blown attempts over the years, each of which I scrapped entirely because it just wasn't working the way I wanted it to work.
But this was a book that wouldn't stay unwritten forever. Finally, after years of writer's block, the whole thing finally clicked, and it came to life on the page as fast as I could type. It's somewhat different than that original conception, but I think it's better in every way. The rules include:
- Clearing territory and attracting followers and settlers in the wilderness
- Becoming functionaries and courtiers and sharing in the intrigues of a royal court
- Governing territories, collecting taxes, creating mines, and dealing with the unexpected events of rulership
- The Long Game, with campaign turns, campaign actions, events, and families
- Mass combat, with simple rules that let the players take center stage at the critical moment and help decide the outcome of the battle
- New secondary skills, treasure, magic items, and spells
It's designed with Adventures Dark and Deep in mind, but should work with most other old-school RPG rules with little to no tinkering.
The book is written, coming in at approximately 125 pages. Now I'm looking to Kickstart the project to bring the book to life.
The funds raised here will be used to pay for the same high-quality art you've come to expect in other BRW Games RPG books, as well as professional copy editing. This will be my fifth Kickstarter; all of my previous campaigns have been successfully completed and most shipped early.
Hey all! Due to the tremendous support you've all shown for the book, I've decided to announce a stretch goal. If we fund with more than $3,200, the number of pieces of art in the book will be increased by 50%. I've been approached by a couple of artists who've expressed interest, and this would give them a great chance to participate, as well as making the book even better than originally planned. Can we get another $500 before the end of the month? Let's see!
UPDATE: We did it! I can't thank you all enough! This book is going to be even nicer than originally planned.
Risks and challenges
This will be my fifth Kickstarter campaign, so any risks born from inexperience are certainly minimal by this point. The manuscript is complete, and the artists have been lined up and are expecting their assignments. The editor is similarly ready to get started as soon as funding is completed. There are no stretch goals to distract from or otherwise compromise delivery of the books as promised. Production and shipping will be handled through OneBookShelf, which has a great reputation for reliability and which has printed and shipping literally tens of thousands of books before.
Naturally, it's impossible to plan for every contingency, but we've taken every opportunity to minimize the places where most other Kickstarter campaigns falter.
The biggest risk is schedule; it's always possible that something might happen to one or more of the artists for the project. We've built in slack time into the timeline to account for this, but in a worst-case scenario it might take longer than anticipated to get a replacement. That might add a month or two to the expected delivery date, but would certainly not cause a total failure.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
