Adventures Dark and Deep™ is an attempt to explore what the world's most popular role-playing game might have looked like if its creator had been allowed to continue developing it, rather than leaving TSR in 1985.
The game is based on extensive research into Gary Gygax's public statements about his vision for the next edition of the game*, using the game's 1st edition rules as a jumping off point. It's not a retro-clone, but an entirely new game with a very familiar feel.
It will be approximately 450 pages and will be lavishly adorned with interior b&w art and a full-color cover. It contains around 900 creatures to use in the game (including almost all those from the original three monster books, finally collected in a single volume, plus scores of new creatures), and can also be used with almost every other 1E-compatible game.
Adventures Dark and Deep™ is designed to be played as a stand-alone game, but can also be used as a source of inspiration and new ideas for your existing game.
The rules for Adventures Dark and Deep™ are completely written and have undergone an extensive 18 month open playtest. Feedback from that playtest has been incorporated into the rules, ensuring that they are complete, workable, and above all, fun.
The proceeds from this Kickstarter campaign will be used to pay for the artwork and professional editing. This is how that's going to work:
If we make our initial modest goal, we'll be able to pay for a nice cover and editing for the book. We can then publish it as a (mostly) art-free book, which would still include all 900 monsters, but there would be almost no interior art.
For every $25 we go over the initial goal, we will be able to illustrate an additional creature. If we make it all the way to $24,000 total, that means we'll have a brand-new piece of art for each and every one of the 900 monsters in the book!
The game is done. We just need to make it beautiful.
We are front-loading as much of the work as possible. The text is completely written and ready to be edited, the art is designed and ready to be assigned to the artists, and the layout is ready to accept the art. We're ready to roll as soon as the money comes in to start paying the artists and editor.
You may notice that several of the support options allow you to sponsor specific pieces of art. If you wish, you can always add a sponsorship to any reward level by simply manually adding $25 to your pledge. If you want to sponsor more than one piece of art, that is more than welcome. You'll be able to pick specific pieces of art; details will be sent out to sponsors after the Kickstarter campaign.
Notes on Shipping
Shipping within the United States is included with your pledge.
We cannot ship to Post Office Boxes. Please provide a street address when completing your backer survey.
We will ship to APO addresses, but there will be a slight delay with such shipments, since they have to be re-mailed.
Due to the extraordinarily high price of shipping to Brazil, we ask backers in that country to please add an additional US$20 to your pledge to partially offset the cost. This is in addition to the surcharge all overseas backers are asked to pay.
If you order a reward that includes a hard copy book other than the Bestiary, all the books will be shipped together, when the Bestiary becomes available. PDF copies will be sent as they become available.
* Note that everything relating to this game was done purely based on public statements and publicly available works; nothing comes from access to any of Gary Gygax's private notes or any other special access, and this project is not associated with either his estate nor any of his living relatives. We wish them all well in their endeavors.

Risks and challenges
With anything of this sort, there is a risk that the book will come out past the estimated release date.
The biggest risk factor is that the art will take longer than expected. In such a case, it would entail a delay rather than a risk to the entire project.
To alleviate this possibility, we have a large number of artists who are both talented and with whom we have worked in the past (and therefore are confident in their ability to make deadlines) We continue to develop strategies to help mitigate this risk.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
