When I moved to Rhydyfelin, just outside the South Wales Valleys, I had little idea that it was once the terminus for a former railway, that was later buried under the A470 trunk road. This was the former Cardiff Railway, and it was a failed competitor to the larger railways in the same area.
I wrote a series of personal blog posts (seen here) loosely documenting the former railway, and they proved to be fairly popular. With that in mind, I was spurred on to do a thorough re-write, update and expansion of all of those blogs into a more substantial, high-quality coffee table book. The history and minutiae of the Cardiff Railway has been more than adequately covered in other excellent books over the years, but I wanted to create a book that showed each stop along the line as it was when it was first opened, as it was after the line closed, right through to the sites as they are in the present day, a real visual journey.
This Kickstarter is to fund the printing of the book, with the following features.
Newly written material and historical context for the imagery.
Large print, high-resolution pictures sourced from the original archives, negatives and photographers where possible.
Updated modern day photography and comparison photographs.
Large scale maps (historical and modern-day).
Glossy, high quality, A4 Landscape Hardcover book.
I have previous experience working in newspaper design, and have self-published books and comic-books before, so I am confident that I can deliver an interesting, informative, high-quality book.
In addition to the book itself, there will be additional rewards available, such as art prints drawn by myself, bookmarks and mugs (for that all-important cuppa to read with)! The higher tier rewards will get backers specific railway artwork of whatever they like, as long as I can get some reference pictures!
- Well over half of the £5000 goal will be used for the printing of the book. The remaining Kickstarter funds will be used to:
- Pay for reproduction rights for the best quality historical photographs possible, from a variety of copyright holders.
- Pay for ISBN numbers for the physical and e-book versions of the book.
- Pay for any reproduction rights for maps, Ordnance Surveys, and aerial photography.
- Pay for any extra postage, additional perks and Kickstarter rewards for backers, and other sundries as they occur.

Risks and challenges
The main risks and challenges are time, and permissions.
I can’t devote my full time attention to the production of the book, so it will be completed over nights and weekends around my other responsibilities and obligations. That said I will endeavour to complete the book by March of 2018.
I will also be endeavouring to gain reproduction permission for all photography used within the book, at as high a quality as possible, but depending on costs this may limit what photographs can be used. There may also be issues obtaining copyright use of some photographs due to lack of contact details of rights holders due to time and age. That being said, I am confident I can negotiate for the maximum usage of photography in the book, and where photography isn't an option, illustrations can be used as a back-up.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
