ＵＰＤＡＴＥ: DEMO NOW AVAILABLE!
Thank you so much for funding this in just over 12 hours. I'm very excited to now be able to commit the amount of time and energy that this project deserves. All the extra money over the original goal will go towards increasing the quality of Knuckle Sandwich, not the size. At this point, you may be wondering about stretch goals.
Knuckle Sandwich is an RPG about a boy who moves out of home and starts looking for work in a new city. After landing a job at a run-down diner, he accidentally gets wrapped up in a missing persons mystery that involves a ludicrous gang and a fanatical cult.
Knuckle Sandwich is set in Bright City – a fictional metropolis on an even more fictional island in south-east Australia. Throughout the course of the game, you find yourself exploring the city, meeting all the inhabitants, and playing a role in their daily lives.
The game is split into chapters, with each one focusing on different locations and characters that bring Bright City to life. My goal with the game is to allow for players to discover many hidden interactions that they could easily miss while playing through the main story arc.
The general aesthetic of the game is inspired by Pokémon and Dragon Ball, while the story is influenced by Fargo, The Big Sleep, and American Psycho (this combo works, trust me).
I wanted to create an RPG that doesn't feature the things I dislike about the genre (like grinding, puzzle elements, having numbers all over the screen, hoarding items, etc.), so the bulk of the game is played out by completing wildly different minigames. They include cooking food, catching bugs, showering, dancing, boxing, writing, and many more.
The battle scenes are made up of sequences that require good timing, such as landing a critical hit or dodging enemy attacks. Both the player and enemy can perform Special Attacks that are very similar to the minigames played throughout the rest of the game.
Mechanically speaking, my inspirations include Warioware, Rhythm Heaven, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. While quick reflexes and a good sense of rhythm helps with Knuckle Sandwich, my aim is to make the game as accessible as possible, so less-experienced players can still beat it without an overwhelming amount of difficulty.
I'm Andrew Brophy, and I'm working on Knuckle Sandwich! I do all the art, design, programming, writing, marketing, and a heap of the sfx. This game started as a silly little Flash game back in 2013. After Flash died, I decided to make it a not-so-silly big game in 2015. It's currently being made in Gamemaker.
It is very hard making a remarkable videogame, but I have put so much of myself into this one, so I think it will be worth it when it's finished.
Good music is probably the most important thing to me when it comes to videogames, which is why I've been working with a bunch of super talented musicians to help bring this project to life! They include Nelward, Capt. Beard, Brainfoam, Barch and Gyms. You can listen to some of the tracks below!
Your New Coworkers — Brainfoam
Handsome Humanoids — Gyms
Thieving Snoop — Capt. Beard
Back Alley Beat — Nelward
OoOoOo — Barch
(You can also find more on the game's official SoundCloud).
Making remarkable videogames is also very expensive! For the majority of this game's development, I have held a day job so that I can support myself.
I'm getting very close to the finish line with Knuckle Sandwich, so with your help, I can go full time on the game and see it through to completion this year. I would also be able to pay for the rest of the soundtrack and hire another artist to help lighten the load with the rest of the art that needs to be made.
I can break down the Kickstarter goal like this:
- 60% of the funds will go towards development, allowing me to finish the game.
- 20% goes towards paying the musicians for the rest of the soundtrack.
- 10% will go towards fulfilling all the rewards for the backers (that's you, silly).
- 10% is for Kickstarter + Amazon fees.
As you may have suspected, I have lined up some pretty cool rewards for backing this Kickstarter. Everyone who backs the campaign will have the option to put their name (or alias) on a weird in-game monument to life itself.
Get a copy of the game (when it's finished) for PC/Mac. It's a little bit cheaper with this tier!
Get a copy of the game (when it's finished) for PC/Mac.
As well as receiving the finished game, you'll gain access to old art, audio, prototypes, video footage, and more things that'll otherwise never see the light of day.
I'll personally send you three postcards featuring art commissioned by some very talented friends. I'll also write a message on them! This tier is limited because my arms will get tired if I write too many and then I won't be able to finish the game.
Thanks to our pals at The Yetee, you'll get a very slick Knuckle Sandwich pin! Includes all previous digital rewards.
You'll get a sweet t-shirt with art by Paperbeatsscissors! The design won't be available outside of this Kickstarter, so it's very rare and it will make you extra powerful if you wear it. Includes the pin + all previous digital rewards.
You'll get a SNES-style boxed edition of the game, complete with a vibrant green cartridge and some extra secret goods. It also comes with an additional download key for the game. Again, this is all thanks to The Yetee! Includes the pin, t-shirt + all previous digital rewards.
Work with me to design a monster that can be fought in the game (within reason, of course). Includes the pin, t-shirt, collector's edition + all previous digital rewards.
Work with me to design a minigame that can be played at an in-game arcade (within reason, of course). Includes the pin, t-shirt, collector's edition + all previous digital rewards below $500.
I hope you dig the game! I'm gonna do all I can to make it the best version of itself. Thanks for reading, hopefully you can help support Knuckle Sandwich and/or tell a friend about it! SEE YA <3
Risks and challenges
I have all the necessary experience needed to see this project through to the end. The bulk of the work is done, with all the systems in place and the design of the mechanics is finished. The rest is just content and refining EVERYTHING. When you back this campaign, you're helping support me so I can finish the game as fast as possible while still allowing for the proper amount of attention to detail.
I've been making games for quite a few years and have finished many - you can find some at http://andrewbrophy.itch.io. Unless something dramatic were to happen to me, I will see this project through to completion.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
