About

If you're looking for scantily-clad gods and goddesses, blood, guts, gore, and graphic violence - stop right here - this is not the game for you. Altasia's Champions are nothing more than ordinary people who have been thrust into extraordinary circumstances. As alluded to above, this game was designed with a relaxed evening around the dining room table in mind, and we're assuming that the kiddies may be along for this journey.

Please be aware, however, that most of the animals in this game are naked. In an early attempt to address this issue, we put blue jeans and a t-shirt on our Abyss Dragon, but later removed them because it seemed to detract from its ferocity. No worries though, we've got our R&D crew all over this.

Welcome to the world of Altasia

Long-forgotten by the inhabitants of Altasia, the evil entity, Scorpius, plotted an escape from his underground prison for almost a century. With his growing skill in dark magic, he reanimated the Gatekeeper, then forced his way back to the surface and ripped the heart from the sacred star, Antares. Watching from high above, the Keepers of Altasia tricked Scorpius into leaving his pyramid stronghold at Ygos and trapped him in a spiral cage. Furiously pacing the confines of the labyrinth, Scorpius is preparing to draw horrible creatures from the Abyss that lies far beneath the surface of Altasia to help him gain his freedom once more.

The desecration of Antares has sent Altasia into a spin. The day/night cycle has been disrupted, the weather is out of kilter, and a general sense of panic has gripped the land. If Scorpius is able to return to his lair and extract the core of the star's power, Altasia will be turned into the wasteland of which he dreams.

For the first time in decades, the Guardian Unicorns have brought together the leaders of six of the major factions in Altasia. All agreed unanimously to set aside their differences and deal with this disaster as allies. The fate of Altasia now lies in your hands, as you must choose the Champion you believe will best be able to end this dire threat to their world.

The six inner kingdoms of Altasia will be those featured in this first adventure. Below are close-ups and short bios of each kingdom, as well as the lair of Scorpius.

                                                Cierros

Cierros is barren desert on most of its surface, but a bounty of mineral wealth for those who are willing and know where to dig. This kingdom's greatest source of wealth, however, is its resilient and resourceful inhabitants. Despite the distances separating the numerous settlements dotting the land, as well as the inherent dangers of desert travel, strong trade networks are bringing a prosperity before unknown to the impoverished outer regions of Cierros. And with a young, but able emperor on the throne who has recently opened up trade with the western sea merchants of Archipelago Eyrr, the Eramaan people are poised to become an economic titan. With the threat of Scorpius now casting a shadow upon this bright future, Sengarrow volunteered to represent her people at Arric's council without hesitation. As a prized member of her kingdom's protectors, the "Desert Sentinels", her skills will be missed there, but nevertheless put to good use in the battle against the forces of the Lower World.

                                                Kahllasa

Kahllasa is in a period of political unrest due to the failing health of its king, Aegrum. With no surviving sons to appoint as heir, the king has presented his only daughter, Kai, to the people as their new leader. Much more at home in her expansive garden among her woodland pets, Kai nevertheless accepted the appointment to appease her dying father. The scheming barons of Kahllasa are little more than wolves in waiting who view their barondoms as their own private property, with the kingdom treasury and Princess Kai to be a prize awarded to the one of them who comes out on top after the king is dead. Completely oblivious to the coming struggle for power, Kai has reluctantly left her ailing father's side to defend her people from the growing threat of Scorpius that now faces them.

                                                    Oberon

The kingdom of Oberon is populated with loosely confederated tribes and clans, and although their spiritual leader dwells in the castle at Alvery, few laws are ever made, with even fewer enforced. The Haltian people are, for the most part, simple farmers and fishermen with an undying love of their land and a deep sense of tradition. Because of their overly-simplistic lifestyle and guiding moral principles, the Haltians are looked down upon by most of the other kingdoms as uneducated and unambitious. As the carefree son of a Human father and Haltian mother, Eniff has had to deal with the added insult of wearing the label, "half-breed". A mischievous resident of the capitol city, Eniff was chosen to represent Oberon as much to get him out of town as it was to appease Arric's council. Not fully comprehending the danger Scorpius represents, the Haltians mistakenly believe that any threats they face will be defeated by the determined bands they form when defending themselves against the fierce Lycans that roam their forests and woodlands.

                                               Tesqua

The Krotos have endured more than their share of tragedy, and have isolated themselves in many ways from their Altasian neighbors, whom they see as aloof. Not only is life in the steppes of Tesqua difficult enough due to the unforgiving landscape, the persistent Orcan raids from the southern islands of Saari seem to grow more brutal with each wave of savages that swarm their shores. Within the cauldron of these trials, a group of men were formed who are, by slow degree, becoming an unbreakable fortress against the barbarism that plagues them - they are known by their people as "Outriders". As a warrior of rare scouting and tactical abilities, Argus stands at the core of the Outriders and is seen by all as their undisputed leader. At first refusing to attend the council called by Prince Arric, his kingdom's chieftain impressed upon him that the threats their people faced on a daily basis paled in comparison to what would happen if the underworld's Champion were loosed on Altasia. Argus's only thoughts are to rid the world of this demon and return to his homeland as swiftly as he can.

                                                    Tyrus

Possessing the greatest military might and economic stability of the six inner kingdoms, the land of Tyrus now finds itself under the firm hand of Prince Arric while his father is away at sea. For the past nine decades, the kings of Tyrus have sought to reunite the Eoan people by bringing the kingdom of Kahllasa back under their rule and attempting to heal the painful rift that split them apart a century ago. The added incentive for Arric to see the two nations march beneath a single flag is his presumed marriage to Princess Kai as a symbol of dynastic unity. At the moment, however, his focus is on the threat at hand. It was Arric who called the Council of Kingdoms when he learned of Scorpius's escape, and, while simultaneously repelling the ever-present attacks from the Ogre Lords in the north and Dark Dragons in the east, he will do whatever is needed to prove to his father and his people that he is a commander to be trusted.

                                                    Xylia

The heavily-forested realm of Xylia is home to the world tree, Yggdrasil. And while the Ariadnan Archers that protect it are known far and wide for their skill in battle, these forest dwellers seek peace and balance above all else. The druidess, Morrigan, is the guardian of their numerous henges and highly attuned to the magical current that is woven into the fabric of their land. Even though she has little concern for the fractious world outside her wooded borders and despises warfare, she was recruited by the Ariadnan High Priest to be Champion of Xylia. Ultimately she accepted because, as distasteful a task as it may be, the alternative of attempting to survive in a land that had been decimated by the forces of the Lower World was unthinkable.

                                 Ygos

Ygos - once an untouched, uninhabited wilderness, now an apocalyptic wasteland. After using his dark powers to reanimate the Gatekeeper, Scorpius forced the Pyramid of the Lower World through the fragile shell at Altasia's center. Fissures and pockets of lava began to appear, then spread, as the fabric that binds the surface world continued to weaken. Had the Keepers of Altasia not stopped its flow with the walls of the Spiral Cage, this creeping blight would have consumed the entire land.

As mentioned in The Prospectus above, we changed from originally intending to offer Altasia in a physical format to now providing it in digital format only. There are two major reasons for this:

1) The astronomical - and we mean ASTRONOMICAL - cost of compliance with CPSIA regulations (and not just in monetary terms) for the manufacture and distribution of a physical product. We're very excited about this game, and wanted to make it reasonably priced. We're working folks too, and realize that most people don't have a lot of disposable income to spend on entertainment.

2) Versatility and Flexibility. As discussed later on in this presentation, one of our main goals for this project is to be able to customize it to our players' tastes as we continue to add expansions. In digital format, we can produce many more variations without having to pass on the costs of setup fees or tracking for special editions and limited runs. We'll also be able to cut our production times down dramatically as well. We expect to deliver this initial version within eight months of receipt of funding. If we had continued with the traditional route, factoring in completion and approval of proofs, CPSIA testing of a prototype, actual manufacturing run, shipping from overseas, shipping to a fulfillment company, then final delivery, it would have been late in 2016 before Altasia hit your doorstep - and that's if we didn't encounter any bumps in the road.

What does this mean for you, our backers? You will need to supply some basic items, such as pawns, poker chips, dice, etc. that can be taken from other games you already own. This will also be another opportunity for customization, if you so choose, as the above-listed components can be found inexpensively and in abundance on the Internet. The .png files supplied by us will enable you to print the cards, boards, charts, etc. on your home printer, or they can be taken to a local print shop. A readme file that lists the number of each item needed, and gives tips and suggestions for printing and assembly, will accompany each order.

Below is a list of the .png files provided with the Core Game:

Main Game Board - This was designed for a 20" x 30" quad-fold board (the same size and style as the game "Risk"). It is provided both as a single file for a commercial printer, and multiple files for a standard home printer.

Combat Board - This was originally designed to be an 8.5" x 15.5" board, but can be printed out on a standard 8.5" x 11.5" sheet (you'll just need to use smaller markers for tracking the stats).

Unit Cost/Resource Tiers/Artifact Combination Chart - These charts can be printed out on a single, standard sheet (front and back), or two separate sheets.

Resource Tokens - These were designed on an Avery template for their #5247 (1" round) sticker sheets. The stickers can be put on poker chips or mounted on card stock. Alternatively, they can be printed directly onto the card stock. These Resource Tokens will also contain hand-drawn icons by A. Nicole.

The Card files will contain the following:

All Custom Card Backs

6 - Champion Cards (all 6 unique)

78 - Unit Cards (18 unique)

60 - Adventure Cards (47 unique)

10 - Omnisquall cards (all 10 unique)

36 - Artifact Cards (31 unique)

5 - Neutral Army Cards (all 5 unique)

1 - Dark Champion Card

25 - Dark Army Cards (22 unique)

2 - Dark Defense Cards (both unique)

Rule Sheets - This file contains the detailed rules for all versions of Altasia. They can be printed out as full sheets, or as a landscape and stapled together to form a booklet.

You will need to supply the following items:

7 - individually colored pawns

6 - small markers to track stats on the Combat Board

16 - game board markers for each player, penny-sized or smaller (pennies work perfectly)

2 - Dice

Printing supplies - ink, card stock, etc. (unless you decide to use a local print shop).

Disclaimer: All images produced for this project will be rendered for a specific finished size, the proofs will be placed on the template using a grid for conformity, and all templates will be tested in our printer before we release them. We can't be held responsible for individual printer misalignment, use of substandard materials, or any image that is printed by the end-user in a size other than that for which it was intended. Even if all suggestions in the accompanying readme file are followed, we can not account for all the possible variations in the finished product caused by printer or material type and quality.

This is an image of the Main Game Board. To view the Combat Board and other charts that will be used during gameplay, click here.

Altasia will contain a total of 223 poker-sized cards (more if some of our Stretch Goals are met). Please keep in mind that these are works in progress and the backgrounds, borders, and textures may change somewhat in the final version of the game.

A talented young artist, A. Nicole, has signed on to design hand-drawn backs for all our cards. The Champion and Dark Champion card backs are proudly displayed below.

Larger images of the cards can be viewed here.

                                     CHAMPIONS/COMBAT UNIT

Six Champions have risen to stand against the threat of Scorpius and his minions. Each one of them will be able to summon up to 10 Combat Units from the Mythic Void to assist them in their quest, with every unit adding its own weight to the overall Army Strength of the Champion. Below are two of Altasia's Champions and their Tier 5 Combat Unit.

Note: The 3 Support Units and Tier 1 – 9 Combat Units are the same for each Champion. The Tier 10 Units are the individual Guardians of each Champion, and will be unique.

                          Dark Champion/Combat Unit/Neutral Unit

The Dark Champion of the Lower World, Scorpius has his own Combat Units he is summoning from the Abyss. Below is the Dark Champion himself and his Tier 9 Combat Unit.

Neutral Units are encountered on the game board via Combat Hexes, and Artifacts are the rewards for defeating them. Currently, there are three different Neutrals: Shadow Trolls, Ghost Pirates, and a sea monster known as a Chelydrus. Stretch Goals will unlock new Neutrals, which means the Combat Hexes will contain an unknown random Unit instead of a predetermined one.

                                                  Artifacts

A sturdy suit of armor is worth its weight in gold when facing a bludgeon-wielding ogre, and Altasia's Champions believe in being well prepared. The Combat Artifacts are arranged into 6 categories: Melee, Ranged, Accessory, Helm, Cuirass, and Shield. Each category contains 5 Artifacts (1 from each tier), and each Champion may possess only 1 Artifact from each category.

Below are a few examples:

                                            Adventure Cards

Adventure Cards drive the action around the game board and build up your combat readiness. The Adventure deck contains the following cards:

15 income modifiers

15 movement modifiers

10 resummon cards

10 skill modifiers

5 artifact finds

5 combat modifiers

Below are a few examples:

                                              Omnisquall Cards

For those of you who have been following this project, we're excited to announce an addition to Altasia that we've been saving for this Kickstarter release date. A new deck has been created, and although it contains only 10 cards, it adds another solid dimension to the game. In order to incorporate more of the storyline into gameplay, we've introduced these global happenings known as "omnisqualls" that have been brought on by the desecration of Antares. Three examples are below:

Edit 4/26/2015: We've also just received two more of our card backs from A. Nicole, the Artifact and Neutral Army, which are again proudly displayed below. (The Neutral Army card will be darker in its finished version).

Here is the direct link to our tutorial, which we didn't post on this site because of its length. We encourage you to take a look, as it gives a good overview of the actual gameplay.

Listed in each Reward Tier is a rank which will determine where your name will be displayed in Altasia's "Hall of Achievement".

                                          Antique Game Map

                                    Limited Edition Cards

There are 6 additional known kingdoms of Altasia that fall outside the extremities of the current game map. These rogue territories and their Champions are neutral in the current conflict, but that neutrality remains tenuous, at best. If Scorpius is indeed defeated, the Gatekeeper himself will not hesitate to make an appearance on the surface world - and to believe he would not attempt to incite these outer kingdoms to war against their brothers is nothing short of insanity.

This is a limited run of Champion, Neutral, and Artifact cards from these outer kingdoms that will appear in Altasia's first expansion. A few examples are below:

                                           Extended Scenes

                                    Customized Game Bundle

The names chosen for this Tier will show up only in your individual copy of the game, and can be anything you like, within reason. If you want to change Eniff's name to "Aunt Tootsie", or Kai's name to "Uncle Buck", that's fine with us. What we won't do is print any names that are crude, derogatory, or otherwise offensive - even if it is for your own personal use. We reserve the right to deem what is inappropriate for us to print - but as stated below in the "Stretch Goals", I think you'll find us easy to work with.

                                                Stretch Goal #1

                                                 New Neutrals

Unlocks when our total funding hits $75,000

This first Stretch Goal unlocks 6 additional Neutral Units and a card that gives the approximate strength (via a range of stats) of the guards for each Combat Hex. So, instead of battling a predetermined Unit, all Combat Hexes will pit the player against an unknown, random Neutral (3 different possibilities for each type of Combat Hex). This Stretch Goal also unlocks Rewards Tier 9, which allows the 9 backers who grab those slots to customize* one of the Neutrals. During production, we'll post 15 Units** on our Updates page, and the backers who have opted for Tier 9 will get their choice of Neutral, with the backer taking the first slot getting first choice, then the second, etc. Tier 9 will also include your name appearing as a Creative Consultant in the "Credits" section of the Rules Sheet file that will accompany each game. In addition, you will receive a Certificate of Acknowledgement from Brown Box Board Games that recognizes you for helping design an original creature for Altasia's inaugural release.

*The customization will consist mostly of creature posing, although there will be a few texture/color options and minor morphs for each creature. As this will be a hands-on, labor-intensive process, the backgrounds will have to remain those chosen by us, with minor changes being at least entertained (i.e., add/remove a rock or tree, etc.) All individual options available will accompany each creature when they're posted, so you'll know what you have to work with before you choose. Since these will be the official versions of the Units for Altasia, the customization must also fit the spirit of the game. A Shadow Troll in pink tights and a tutu just isn't going to cut it - even if it is hefting a double-barrel, sawed-off shotgun. We have to reserve the right to make the final decision on what is acceptable for the game, but I think you'll find us pretty easy to get along with.

**Since we already have 3 fixed Neutral Units scheduled to appear in the game, these will be among the choices offered in Tier 9, Tier 10, and Tier 11, but do not necessarily have to be chosen.

Please Note: These Stretch Goal customizations (Tier 9, Tier 10, and Tier 11) do not include a name change for the Neutral Unit. We will choose the Neutrals for all slots in any of the aforementioned tiers that are not filled by backers.

                                                Stretch Goal #2

                                         New Neutrals Extended

Unlocks when our total funding hits  $100,000

This second Stretch Goal unlocks the 6 Units from above, plus 6 additional Neutral Units and a card that gives the approximate strength of the guards for each Combat Hex. This will give 5 different possibilities for each type of Combat Hex. This Stretch Goal also unlocks Rewards Tier 10, which allows 6 additional backers to customize* a Neutral Unit. This means, once production begins, we'll post 18 Units on our Updates page, and the backers who have opted for Tier 9 and Tier 10 will get their choice of Neutral, with the backer who took the first slot getting first choice, then the second, etc. All those from Tier 9 get their choice before starting with the first person from Tier 10. Tier 10 will also include your name appearing as a Creative Consultant in the "Credits" section of the Rules Sheet file that will accompany each game. In addition, you will receive a Certificate of Acknowledgement from Brown Box Board Games that recognizes you for helping design an original creature for Altasia's inaugural release.

*All rules and guidelines for customization in the "New Neutrals" Stretch Goal apply here as well.

                                                Stretch Goal #3

                                         New Neutrals Complete

Unlocks when our total funding hits $150,000

This final Stretch Goal unlocks the 12 Units from above, plus 3 additional Neutral Units and a card that gives the approximate strength of the guards for each Combat Hex. This will give 6 different possibilities for each type of Combat Hex. This Stretch Goal also unlocks Rewards Tier 11, which allows 3 additional backers to customize* a Neutral Unit. This means, once production begins, we'll post 21 Units on our Updates page, and the backers who have opted for Tier 9, Tier 10, and Tier 11 will get their choice of Neutral, with the backer who took the first slot getting first choice, then the second, etc., All those from Tier 9 get their choice before starting with the first backer from Tier 10, then all those from Tier 10 choose before starting with the first backer from Tier 11. Tier 11 will also include your name appearing as a Creative Consultant in the "Credits" section of the Rules Sheet file that will accompany each game. In addition, you will receive a Certificate of Acknowledgement from Brown Box Board Games that recognizes you for helping design an original creature for Altasia's inaugural release.

*All rules and guidelines for customization in the "New Neutrals" Stretch Goal apply here as well.

We've almost reached our word limit for this presentation, so click here to view our proposed schedule.

The main goal for us is to get Altasia established on a firm foundation, then customize it to suit our players' tastes with expansion sets. As fans of fantasy games in general, we know the importance of customization - which is exactly why we put the rule variations and Fast-Track versions into this first edition. The expansions will consist mostly of cards, rule changes, and possibly small add-ons to the existing game board. If most people think the game mechanics are just fine, we'll leave them alone and concentrate on introducing new characters and creatures. If they find the game to be too simplistic, we have plans for a more complex rules system. If everyone wants interactive lore and story, we're ready for that as well. There's a lot we can do once we get off the ground, but right now we're taking those baby steps we need to get momentum.

Thank you again for taking the time to review this project. We encourage you to visit our website where you'll find a short prologue that reveals a little more of the story and a few other items not posted here. Comments and questions are welcome here or on our blog.

Risks and challenges

The Risks:

The main thing at risk for us at this point is our sanity. Taking nothing more than an idea and turning it into a tangible "something" is an adventure all its own. The sleepless nights, bleary-eyed days, and endless agonizing over every minute detail until your brain goes numb is something that must be experienced - it can never be expressed accurately in words. But, without challenges to keep the blood pumping, life can become quite a stale cracker indeed.

The Reward:

The reward of a successful campaign will be Brown Box Board Games living to see another day and enabling the members of its staff to continue sharing their creativity with their supporters for a long time to come.
