A Storm is Coming

Since the beginning of this campaign, we have asked backers what fantasy series you would like to see us explore in Call to Adventure. The top answer has been consistent and resounding: a game set in the world of Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive.

Turns out, great minds think alike.

We are huge fans of Sanderson, especially the stories set in his series-transcending Cosmere. From Mistborn to The Emperor's Soul, we love them all, but our favorite has to be the pillar of that multiverse: The Stormlight Archive. The three weighty tomes released so far -- The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance, and Oathbringer -- are epic fantasy at its best. Intricate world-building, compelling characters, and a believable magic system are just the beginning of what makes Stormlight books amazing.

So for months we have been in touch with Sanderson's team, and have just been waiting for Gen Con Brandon to make this announcement. Our dream has always been that a successful Kickstarter campaign for Call to Adventure would position us to release new games, and we couldn't be more excited for this opportunity.

Call to Adventure: Stormlight will give you the opportunity to build a hero in the exotic world of Roshar. If you're not familiar with this best-selling series, here's a peek inside the cover flap:

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter.

It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars are fought for them, and won by them...

The Stormlight version of Call to Adventure begins much like a round of the base game. You might be a pampered noble, a healer's son, or a street urchin. But players will be pursuing unique Destiny cards based on the Orders of Knights Radiant, growing in their abilities to harness the power of Stormlight. The game will explore the unique and sometimes alien world of Roshar, as well as its inhabitants' artifacts and allies. From Shardblades to Spren to storytelling, we'll celebrate everything readers love about this epic series.

Journey Before Destination

The only downside is that today's announcement is just the beginning, and we don't anticipate publishing the game being until the second half of 2019. With that in mind, the Stormlight edition of Call to Adventure won't be a part of this Kickstarter. For now, we hope you'll be content to know that you can look forward to even more Call to Adventure in the year ahead. During development, we'll be sure to provide glimpses of unique mechanics and artwork. For now, here's an illustration by Paul Canavan entitled Edgedancer.

Thanks again for your support, and for making a dream come true by giving us the chance to work with our favorite authors.

This is the expansion I was hoping for - glad to see this!

Out of curiosity, how will the stormlight set integrate with the base set? Just mix em in? Play as a stand-alone because you feel like enjoying that particular IP tonight? And do you plan to develop the game and add new mechanics at that point, or will it be a reskin of the base game we’re pledging for now? This game looks fantastic and it’s a unique system you’ve developed, and I can’t wait to give it to myself for Christmas...

I cannot describe how excited I am about this, backing this campaign was the best decision I've made! My favourite author is Patrick, followed very closely by Brandon. There are no words...

    4. Rye S on

Gentleman Bastards would be fantastic too.

Great news! I will also recommend Joe Abercrombie's First Law-universe as a possible great addition to the game and also Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Will this be an expansion like the Name of the Wind (75) cards or a standalone game?

    12. Hedgehamster on

I'm not sure if I should hate you for this announcement ;)... telling us there will be an add-on theme based on one of the most amazing fantasy series in the world and than telling us... BUT NOT NOW come again next year... Aarrgh!

      I’m so stoked for this!!!

    16. Wally on

Will that expansion be another kickstarter?

    17. Fletcher on

Do you forsee most of the expansions for this game being based off of other IPs?
Do you think this game ever branching out into other speculative genres? Like urban fantasy, space opera sci-fi, distopian cyberpunk, etc?

Made a kickstarter just to back this for the original game and the Kingkiller Chronicles. Was already TOO excited for that. Then I mozy around the update page and get this incredible gift of anticipation dropped on me. Absolutely electric.

      This is amazing, thank you!

@David: We favor more archetypal card names, so an Adversary card depicting Sadeas might be called Warmonger or Schemer or something along those lines. But Awesomeness is not totally out of the question... maybe a Hero card!

@Timwise: Anything is possible! But unique mechanics like Naming and the Radiant paths won't be designed to be compatible.

@Antoinette: The Lightbringer series could be fun, but for now we have a good pipeline of top fantasy properties.

@Rayne: We would feel really proud if we inspired you to read some more fantasy. The Stormlight books are a little intimidating in terms of length, but they're imminently readable and pretty fast-paced in terms of plot. Each book is basically three books in one.

@ManicJest: Name of the Wind is a little closer to the default/generic "world" of Call to Adventure, so only some of the more supernatural cards (like Dragon Hoard) get taken out. We'll hold off on revealing anything about how Stormlight will work with the main set, except to say that it will.

@Danny: Agreed! We are honored to be the first game (that we know of) set in Roshar.

Omg! I didn't think I could be more excited! The Stormlight Archive is an incredible series and now can't wait to play it out!
If you're still after more expansion ideas, I'd love a Wheel of Time set!

Amazing news, I love Sanderson's work, got all of my books by him signed, and the cosmere is perfect place to explore in games.

@Brotherwise will this be a base game all on it's own? If so, do you anticipate having an expansion out for those already with the base game?

I assume this expansion will also be compatible to combine/play with all of the other cards and expansions as well?

    26. Rayne on

This post is making me realize that despite the fact that I love fantasy I haven't read a lot of the big, thick tomes of fantasy novels that most people have.

I feel like this game is gonna end up inspiring me to read a lot more.

But on an aside... holy cow how amazing would a Tortall or Circle of Magic world be for this game? I grew up on all of Tamora Pierce's books and I feel like her worlds would work perfectly with Call to Adventure.

Stormlight Archive and Kingkiller Chronicles are literally my favorite books/series of all time. It's like this game was made for me :) Thank you!

My next two favorite books under these would be The Last Unicorn and The Hobbit, so I'm looking forward to those expansions as well. ;)

I'm also wondering how/if these different expansions will combine with the base game and/or each other. Will you be able to call on the wind in order to protect those who cannot protect themselves?

      Klakak on

That's awesome. Love Sanderson's stuff. I would love to see an expansion based on my favorite series' by Michael J Sullivan, the various Riyria series of books.

      Absolutely thrilled. Too awesome.

    34. David Kotsonis on

Probably it's genre-inappropriate for there to be a trait card called Awesomeness. <3 Lift.

Will expansions that involve tie-ins with existing fantasy properties have named characters, or will the Allies/Adversaries be archetypal categories like the base game?
