$100,000 Achieved ...and the Results Are In!

The debates are over, the votes are in, the results have been counted, and the world can finally stop holding its breath. The people have spoken... and Level-Up Tokens are in the game!

Every Kickstarter backer will receive a set of four shiny metal tokens with your copy of Boss Monster. These arcade-style coins are more than a cool collectible -- they're the perfect way to mark when your Boss Monster's Level-Up ability has triggered. Level your Boss and look cool doing it thanks to these golden coins.

Of course, this particular achievement has been unlocked thanks to the fact that today we surpassed ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS in Kickstarter support! (Cue the victory music!) We know we keep talking about blown away we are by the success of this project, and by the amount of passion we've seen in the community here. But your awesomeness keeps taking us by surprise. Nearly half of our current supporters participated in the vote for tokens versus holofoil. We didn't even think that many people were reading these daily updates! You guys rock beyond all belief.

But we know you want more than a pat on the back. You want the next stretch goal! We've heard a ton of suggestions for stretch goals, including some that we'll have to save for our next Kickstarter and some that are better suited as add-ons. But one thing we've heard loud and clear is a request for more game content -- stuff you can actually use to add variety to the game. That's what our $130,000 stretch reward is all about.

If we hit $130,000 (we're using a $30K increment this time because we actually expect the pace of pledges to increase in our final ten days), every Kickstarter backer at the PLAYER'S CHOICE level and above will receive four new promo cards and a digital kit to create custom print & play cards.

Let's break it down. These aren't just any cards. These are four very special cards, including:

  • The Brothers Wise: Because we're not above a little narcissism, we created this lovable two-headed ogre mage with a knack for always finding the right card. We think Katrina really captured our good looks.
  • Hellcow: In our final stages of playtesting, we have been honored to have game designer and novelist Keith Baker playing the game and offering crucial advice. We are big fans of Keith's work on Gloom, the Eberron D&D campaign setting, and many other games, so it's been reassuring to see such a seasoned designer having a blast with our game. To celebrate, we figured we had to immortalize his bovine alter ego as a Boss!
  • Pixel Lincoln: In launching a pixel-themed card game on Kickstarter, we knew that some people would compare us to Pixel Lincoln. But though we may have begun as rivals, that all changed when Pixel Lincoln designer Jason Tagmire ended up with a review copy of Boss Monster. He saw right away that the games are very different, but both awesome. So at Jason's suggestion, we've joined forces to bring time-traveling Pixel Lincoln to the world of Boss Monster as a truly Epic Hero ...and King Croak will be popping up as a promo card for Pixel Lincoln!
  • T.P.K.: If you've Mastered a few Dungeons, you might be familiar with the concept of a Total Party Kill. For a Boss Monster, it's the ultimate win, so we're making this very special Spell card available exclusively as part of the $130K promo pack.  It's not easy to achieve, but it's an almost certain victory if you manage to pull it off.

And to round out this stretch reward, we're offering a way for everyone to make themselves a part of Boss Monster. Whether you're an EXTRA LIFE backer who wants to make playtest cards or a pixel artist who wants to make totally slick-looking cards, we're providing you with the tools to do so.

If you want a simple mock-up, we'll provide a PDF with card frames that have blank white spots you can use to write in the relevant info. (That's shown on the left.) But for those who prefer something fancier, we're also providing a customizable template that will let you make print-and-play cards using our fonts, backgrounds and icons. (That's shown on the right.) With custom cards, the possibilities are endless!

Both of these rewards will be offered to everyone receiving the other promo cards and digital goodies included in the PLAYER'S CHOICE (and all pledge levels above it).

We hope you like the new cards and the chance to make your own creations. Wish us luck on hitting $130K, and please help us get there by continuing to spread the word!

What kind of card stock will these cards be printed on, so that we know how to make homebrew cards true-to-form?

    2. Dave Krechevskoy on November 7, 2012

Dare I say "There is no cow level" in Boss Monster?

    3. Spencer Penaloza on November 7, 2012

@Ben: hope so too it seems like going at a decent pace though its almost 4k above where it was at time of update post. Might be a good excuse to learn how to do pixel art =).

    4. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

      @Griffin @Donnie
Yea I like the name Powder Keg more. Great suggestion.

Also transparent card image could be more costly so who knows. Cause even in gloom they barely have any color on the grey cards and they do not have images. So not sure how well pixel art will translate. If it can be done well I would like to see.

    5. Ginormous on November 7, 2012

I hope we see the $130,000 goal reached. Those four extra cards sound cool. Might be fun to design my own cards as well.

would of loved to get those Holofoils

    7. Brian McDonald on November 7, 2012

This is a really nice goal. I like the blank template. I can make hero cards for my whole family now. (All I need are some more-than-rudimentary art skills.)

    8. Griffin Patterson on November 7, 2012

@I do love the Powder Keg idea (TNT idea but powder keg is such a better name) and you're right that Transparent Cards would be difficult to balance with the chock-fulledness of the cards already, but if done right, it could look so good.

    9. Donnie Clark on November 7, 2012

TnT (or something more thematic like a Powder Keg or Goblin Bomb) would make an interesting hero tool to deal with.

    10. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

This is what I get for responding half awake.
What I meant was it is unlikely a lot of the cards will be pure abilities, like the Lincon card, or the transparent card. Also having transparent cards mean it would require some interesting UI to make it work for multiple equips.
I agree and its what I had in mind that those skills would be in play. At first when I read ability I was thinking like Lincon/ Boss ability you are giving hero which might be too powerful.

      Other ideas similar to yours:
      - Have a Hero carry a Tnt as a martyr, destroying the room he dies in.
      - Changing a Heros type or adding a type to make him a hybrid hero :P (shameful plug)
      - A Pickaxe/Drill/Dungeon Map + Compass(LOZ reference) so the Hero enters from the second room instead

TLDR. Misread. I disagree with transparent, agree with the abilities you mentioned

    11. Griffin Patterson on November 7, 2012

@Koey, why don't you think that ToHK will add abilities? What else will it add? I would be surprised if they come out with an expansion that simply gives heroes more health. And besides adding different types/more treasures, it would all in all be a pretty crap expansion. I would fully expect the tools to come with perks. Shield would reduce damage from trap rooms. Spells would effect different rooms. Swords would negate a monster room. Weapon of bleeding would inflict extra wound if Boss Monster is reached. I can't see why they wouldn't include things like that in ToHK...

So happy to see the tokens, but even more ecstatic to see the next stretch goal! I love the 4 promo cards and the ability to create my own cards.

While I didn't want foil cards, I do hope you'll consider making the boss monster foil cards available as an add-on for those who wanted them.

I'm also for player mats, as an add-on as well. I understand that they don't fit well inside the box, which is why it'd be better as an add-on so that those who really want them can deal with storing them.

Also had a thought for another fun stretch goal - turn the box into a tin box. That'd be soo cool to have a tin box inside the special sleeve. I don't know how feasable that would be, but it'd be awesome.

I'm seriously going to have to find some extra money in my budget to up my pledge level. This game is freaking awesome and it sounds like you guys have a lot of ideas for future expansions that I just have to have! Got 11 days to figure it out....

    13. Donnie Clark on November 7, 2012

Stretch goal met, huzzah! I approve, and I love the new stretch goal cards!

Quick question on T.P.K. - Is it worth just two Souls if you have a full cast in your scorekeeping area, or two on its own, plus an additional two Souls if the T.P.K. is achieved?

      on November 7, 2012

i was in for the coin but one cool thing would be that the TBD dragon kickstarter exclusive card would be the only foil !

    15. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

I like the idea of covering the text to give abilities, but I feel that might work better for boss cards. For those that like to randomize skills. As most heroes do not have abilities, I doubt ToHK will be adding abilities.
Larger cards could be unwanted by certain players that want to keep all their cards in the same box size.

I was thinking they have icons like they do with Heroes. Then all you need to do is slide the card beneath the hero.
Similar to how Boss cards slide the Hero card and only show the bottom for wounds/souls.
I think that could be done similarly for tools where you only need to put icons at the bottom so you can slide the card beneath and could also be used for point collecting.
(try imaging sliding a second hero card under the current hero, and only leave the bottom part showing. So you will see it have 2 wounds and the left could be heart and maybe icons for special abliities.

Congrats on hitting $100,000!! Here's my preview of Boss Monster (short version: a LOT of fun), showing the differences between Boss Monster and Pixel Lincoln. And here's a closer look at the King Croak boss card that we're going to be releasing as a Pixel Lincoln promo.

    18. joetheguy on November 7, 2012

With every update I feel better and better about supporting this project. You guys obviously care very much about the game and the community that has sprung up around it. Now I need to go tell everyone I know about it... again. Come on, 130K!

    19. Griffin Patterson on November 7, 2012

@BWG will the blanks PDF contain the needed mock ups for all styles of cards? I would really like to be able to add spells and the likes as well as heroes, rooms and bosses.

    20. Griffin Patterson on November 7, 2012

I was simply thinking of a clear card with a title that would go under the name, a new ability that would completely cover the flavor text and heart that would go next to the heart for extra health and maybe a circle that would go bottom right (?) for additional treasure type. The art would be completely unaffected (as you are right that a singular weapon back in the middle would give away the tool that is to be drawn next) and since these are only tools that are given to the heroes, there would only (presumably) be one card type in the entire tool deck.

Another option would be larger cards that would be placed behind the hero with a part sticking above (tool name) and below (what the tool does) allowing people to see the full hero card while not obstructing the tool. Or maybe a small cardboard piece (like in Elder Sign) that could be placed over top of the flavor text that outlines the ability. Just some thoughts.

I can believe that foils didn´t make it, so many people changing theirs votes... This definitely should be the next reward after these extra cards (wich are great!). And man, I second the play mats rewards! Anyway, it's been a great pledge, with great rewards!

    22. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

      @Jeremy Williams
The only downside to Gloom cards is since the cards are transparent, you can sort of see them. So if you have a deck of unique colored looking weapons it would become quite easy to predict whats coming up next. Like in gloom you can tell your opponent likely has an event or untimely death if the card has no circles.

Why no Ankh treasure Boss so we have 4 of each type? ><
My vote goes to the Anti Hero Boss (ie. think Dark Link, FF rivalry) I mean no game is complete without it.

    23. Jeremy Williams on November 7, 2012

Well, isn't the art still up in the air? I mean, I haven't seen any art for them...have you? Maybe they'll be all in the middle, standardized in order to allow this to happen?

How freaking cool would that be? Have a generic mage hero hold a "Staff of Lightning", gets a clear card to "cover" him with a nice gold/orange/yellow rod and have lightning bolts all over the art? ALL IN PIXELATED GOODNESS?! Or a Thief can get "Cloak of Shadows", which covers up the image in the middle (the hero) and replaces it with just the shadow?

Oh, please BW...please make this happen.... :)

    24. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

I like the idea of sliding the cards beneath so it shows either a +2 HP or more damage.
Sort of like how wounds and souls are done by Bosses. It would also make counting wounds easier as the tools can be used in similar fashion.

    25. Griffin Patterson on November 7, 2012

@Chesu While it would be sick to literally equip a weapon or armor on the hero, I don't think that the heroes would be similar enough to put them on top. That said, it would still work well for names like "Thief of elusiveness" with the ToHK addition added underneath it. It would still show the pixel art, treasure type, health but add extra title, ability as well as extra health. I think it would work very very well.

    26. Andy The Sane on November 7, 2012

I originally voted tokens, then switched to foils when it was announced they would be in addition to the "standard" cards, but I was happy with either choice.

    27. Kyle Merritt on November 7, 2012

I'm pretty sure clear cards isn't what they have planned, but I really wish it was... That would be amazing! :O

Unfortunately, due to small size of the hero sprites and the fact that they're all in different poses, the tools would have to be very small, and would just be next to the hero rather than "equipped". Still though, I think that's a great idea... Crash Landing should definitely do something with that.

    28. Jeremy Williams on November 7, 2012

What is this clear cards you speak of? WHAT IS THIS....SORCERY? That is beyond epic. What a neat idea - have your equipment be clear to retain the old cards, but still display ....brilliant, brilliant, brilliant....

    29. Griffin Patterson on November 7, 2012

The Digital PnP is an absolutely amazing stretch goal. I am very impressed and am looking forward to having the opportunity to make some special cards as well as print out extra things for the solo variant we're working on.

Out of curiousity, you mentioned that Kieth Baker of Gloom was playtesting with you. Are you going to use a Gloom style of clear cards for the ToHK expansion? Is that why PnP is simply impossible? Because those clear cards would be an amazing mechanic of showing the tools as well as the hero.

    30. Kyle Merritt on November 7, 2012

Note: observations are not criticisms. If I sound like I'm being rude, it's more due me being frank with my thoughts than actual intentions.

    31. Kyle Merritt on November 7, 2012

Huh, you guys ended up using the normal version of Murphy for the TPK card instead of the Epic version? Without his red skin, all the green in the card is really noticeable...

    32. Glenn McClune on November 7, 2012

Jeremy, that's what I would do normally. I often do that when working with printed cards I do myself.

    33. Jeremy Williams on November 7, 2012

Well, if worse comes to worse, I'll just use non-clear card sleeves and plop them on some Magic commons....

But that is a good idea Glenn. Any chance for some card-front blanks, but not the backs? I know...i know....we ask for the world and the moon.....

    34. Glenn McClune on November 7, 2012

Then people can print their customs onto sticker paper and adhere them on. No idea why I missed that sentence.

    35. Glenn McClune on November 7, 2012

Very cool, I love the idea of the print and play cards, the only suggestion I might add to that would be to make available card blanks that are cards with the boss monster back, but white fronts.

      Also better victory music…

    36. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

Thanks for the response. Ah a staff makes sense for a magic boss.
Cool look forward to rules being updated.

Cool just would be nice so when people in comments in question we do not point them in wrong direction.

Can finally try to make Hybrid Heroes.

And before anyone says anything...I know it's a Paradise Lost reference.

    38. Brotherwise Games 3-time creator on November 7, 2012

@Zack and @Mitchell: We feel your pain. (Well, one of us does... Brother Two loved the idea of shiny Boss cards.) Never say never, but for now we're focused on these new rewards at the $130K level.

@Koey: The art direction to Katrina was that we should be holding a magic staff. I'll admit I didn't notice that the end looks like a jester's cap ...or perhaps a pair of dunce caps. Perhaps that's what our lead artist really thinks of us?

@Koey: The final rules will include a note that once all Spell cards are exhausted, any discarded Spell cards are shuffled back into the deck. This has been rare in playtesting, but more common when we play with Pixel Lincoln in the mix. (Like any of the Kickstarter-exclusive cards, Pixel Lincoln is an optional card.)

@d0ct0rscarecr0w: Hellcow is actually an alter ego that Keith Baker has used ever since he designed the d20 adventure "En Route" for Atlas Games. The Diablo cow level is a coincidence, though one that definitely fits our world of video game references.

@Harry: We have explored the idea of a playmat and individual player boards, but because of how much space the game takes up, we haven't been able to come up with a satisfactory solution. The game plays well without a playmat, but we agree that a pixel art playmat would have looked very cool.

@Koey: Thanks for the catch. This should affect the Player's Choice and above. (This is for logistical/collation reasons rather than trying to get people to upgrade from $20 to $25, but we're also happy to see people upgrade for these bonuses.)

@Don: Just saw that. We pore over all of these updates because gamers are a detail-oriented bunch, but in the rush to get this posted (and because this is the first time The Brothers Wise card has existed as anything other than a blank playtest card) I missed that "it." Rest assured that little typos like that will be resolved before we go to production.

I understand the theme, but not sure I like the "Better to rule in hell than serve in heaven" line. Merely because it could turn off some folks I'd like to teach the game too if they ask what it means. I suppose I could always tell them it means, "Building Dungeons like a BOSS!"

    40. Jeremy Williams on November 7, 2012

Aw, shucks guys! You gave me my custom print n play option!

You are most definitely getting a $150 pledge from me. Who needs to save for a house anyways?!

Sad that the foil cards didn't win, but I'm really OK with it at this point!

      Homebrew, here I come, here I come...HERE I COME!

Brothers Wise seems to have a typo: should read "... and put IT into your hand." The IT is missing.
Anyhoo, this is all very exciting. Are we really going to see these by February? Stoked..

    43. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

I assume the Pixel Lincon effect is related to the fact that it is a deck building game?
I do not know much just clicked link they provided.

Also I am surprised at the results of who won.

    44. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

Might want to update the text. There seems to be some inconsistency on which levels the $130k affects.

" every Kickstarter backer at the PLAYER'S CHOICE level and above will receive four new promo cards and a digital kit to create custom print & play cards."
Both of these rewards will be offered to everyone receiving the other promo cards and digital goodies included in the POWER-UP PACK (and all pledge levels above it).

    46. d0ct0rscarecr0w on November 7, 2012

So before it is asked. Hellcow is a reference to Diablo II, T.P.K means total party Kill, and of course The Brother Wise is a reference to the creators. The coin says, "Better to rule in hell than serve in heaven".

I don't know about the Pixel Lincoln one, I'm not sure how the effect is related to Lincoln.

Here's hoping the $160,000 mark is the extra foil cards. Would have been EPIC.

    48. Carlos - "Koey" on November 7, 2012

Woot you guys actually made a Brotherwise Boss.
I would have assumed Twin Dragon will be more befitting if TBD did not exists. Ogres still work perfectly fine. Question is that a scythe they are holding or a jester hat shaped hammer?

Pixel Lincon sounds like an interesting mechanic, but what happens if there is not enough spells left in the deck for everyone to draw 3 cards? Do each player take turn drawing or players with lower XP get's shafted

Also nice choice of making the $30 bundle even more interesting.

Can't wait for tomorrow to hear about shirts.

    49. Zack Pope on November 7, 2012

I have to admit, one of the reasons I pledged was the idea of having holo foil boss cards, kind of disappointed to see them go. Any chance they could be made at any other levels?

    50. RetrO on November 7, 2012

Wow, thanks for the update! I love the look of those tokens, fits the game very well. Also, looking forward to those new cards! Yay! Thanks again Brotherwise Games!
