Hello, Boss Monsters! Whenever we have big news coming, we like to share it with you first. Big news is definitely on the way, so let's jump into it.

Boss Monster Returns to Kickstarter

Since the end of our first campaign, Boss Monster players have asked us, "when are you launching another Kickstarter?" The wait is almost over. In four weeks, we will be back on Kickstarter with Boss Monster 2.

You might wonder why we're returning to Kickstarter this time around. We launched our first expansion, Tools of Hero-Kind, without further Kickstarter support. We've had a lot of success over the last two years, and it's always been our policy to make sure the bulk of our business goes through the friendly local game stores that keep our favorite hobby alive.

Even so, there are things that we want to do with Boss Monster 2 that a Kickstarter will make possible. It means we can make a fancy Limited Edition with holofoil cards, like the original Legendary Edition of the first Boss Monster. It gives us a chance to test ideas like a separate Collector Box designed to hold sleeved cards, which we'll bring to stores if response on the Kickstarter is good.

It's also a great way to spread the word about Boss Monster. To make the most of the buzz that builds during a Kickstarter campaign, we'll do everything we can to minimize the time between the campaign and our first shipments to game stores.

Shaking Things Up

You'll notice a few things about our next campaign that are different. The first is the turnaround time, which we're trying to make lightning-fast. The second is the length of the campaign itself, which will be shorter. We'll also be handling promo cards differently, to make sure we don't make any permanent "gameplay exclusives" like we did last time. The final big change is that we don't plan on including any "custom card" awards.

When we launched our first Kickstarter, we were two brothers just trying to scrape together enough funding for a print run of the game we'd designed. With that in mind, we filled our first campaign with options for backers to pay a little extra to make an impact on cards in the game. Our campaign for the Boss Monster app included another forty make-your-own-Hero cards, which will appear in the next print run of the core Boss Monster game. All told, we've involved backers in the design of nearly a hundred cards!

For Boss Monster 2, instead of more custom Heroes, we designed them all from scratch. Some are Hybrid Heroes, lured by more than one treasure. Some are Dark Heroes, who you can "pay" to deal more damage to an opponent. The rest are "vanilla" Heroes without ability text, but they'll be jam-packed with geeky references that we think you'll love.

But what if you wanted to place your stamp on Boss Monster 2? Like in a really, really big way? Well, there's still one option...

Become a Dragon

During our original campaign, one backer stepped up and threw a crazy amount of support behind a completely unknown game. His name is Tremane "Scythe" Barclay, and he pledged $1,000 for naming rights to our Golden Dragon. He named the dragon Kirax, a draconic twist on his wife's nickname. Kirax lives on as a rare promo card exclusive to our original Kickstarter edition.

Boss Monster 2 includes twelve Boss cards, including four dragon Bosses, which will appear in every copy of the game. Like Kirax, they have Level Up abilities that persist for the rest of the game. And just as we did with the Golden Dragon, we're giving you a chance to "adopt" a dragon. Instead of doing it to raise money for Brotherwise, though, we're auctioning off our dragons to support four great charities.

We've just launched four auctions through eBay Giving Works. Each gives you the chance to bid for the naming rights to a dragon, and each supports a great cause. Brotherwise Games will donate 100% of the winning bids directly to charity.

The White Dragon: Our Cleric-themed dragon will raise funds for The Nature Conservancy. For more information on The Nature Conservancy's mission "to conserve the lands and waters on which all life depends," visit www.nature.org

The Blue Dragon: Our arcane dragon will raise funds for Worldbuilders. Founded by fantasy author Patrick Rothfuss, Worldbuilders raises funds for Heifer International, which seeks to eliminate hunger through sustainable agriculture and commerce. For more on Worldbuilders and Heifer, visit www.worldbuilders.org

The Black Dragon: Our Thief-slaying dragon will raise funds for Child's Play. Founded by the creators of Penny Arcade, Child's Play is dedicated to improving the lives of children with toys and games in hospitals and domestic violence support shelters. For more information, visit www.childsplaycharity.org

The Red Dragon: Our Fighter-luring dragon will raise funds for The Wounded Warrior Project, which exists to raise awareness and enlist the public's aid for the needs of injured service members. For more information, visit www.woundedwarriorproject.org

Even if you don't plan on adopting a dragon, be sure to click through those links to check out our four dragon Bosses in all their glory! Each auction also contains information on how to make a direct donation to its related charity.

Soon

The Boss Monster 2 Kickstarter is just over a month away. The Boss Monster app is a little over a week away. The excitement is ramping up, and we can't wait to show you all the new cards. As always, thanks for your support and we hope to see you during the next campaign!

Blast! I tried, but they slipped through my fingers each final moment. Congrats to the winning bidders, and ultimately the charities. Now, allow me to go slink into a corner.

Kevin, it will work as standalone or in combination with the original!

Karlen, it will be called "The Next Level," but we almost went with "Boss Monster 2: Electric Boogaloo."

Will the Boss Monster 2 KS campaign have a pledge level that includes the Tools of a Hero-Kind expansion?

    4. Dan Rodriguez on

I really hope that this is compatible with the first game! It would be cool to be able to combine the 2 together. Not that that's going to stop me from buying it obviously!

    5. Hassan Lopez on

This was a great announcement. And I really hope this new set is compatible with the first, so that we can just add more variety to our experience.

Boss Monster is easily the best and most playable game I've received through Kickstarter, and you guys run business in a great way. I'm stoked for Boss Monster 2!

Looking forward to this! And definitely want to know whether Boss Monster 2 is compatible with the first.

    9. Karlen on

I hope it's named something like "Boss Monster 2: Electric Avenue" or "Boss Monster 2: Not Dead Yet!"

    10. Kevin B. on

Is this going to be a stand-alone? Will we be able to combine the sets?

    11. Timothy Van Cleve on

Huh. I didn't expect to be outbid that fast. I think your charity run is going to do quite well.

    12. Massimiliano Luisi on

Will you include the print and play version of the card from the last kickstarter (the videogame one) as a stretch goal/add on?
      I totally would take them

    13. Timothy Van Cleve on

I'll kick off the blue dragon, but I have a feeling I'll be bid out rather quickly. Sad for me, good for charity.

Ian, we definitely intend for there to be a Super Boss Monster in the future!

Joseph, we'll provide exact details when the campaign goes live but Unlimited Backers will be definitely be entitled to the Kickstarter edition of Boss Monster 2!

George, thanks! We admire other geeky entrepreneurs who have found ways to raise money for charity, and working with Patrick Rothfuss as a Worldbuilders sponsor has been especially inspiring. Our hope is to find more ways to support these causes in the future!

    15. Skimple on

That's great news guys!! Congrats! But why in the world is this now called SUPER Boss Monster in the tradition of all great console to console sequels.

    16. DZ Zee on

Cannot wait! Two things to look froward to-- the app and BM2. Woot!

    17. Joseph Bullock-Palser on

Congrats.. But I have a question that you knew would be asked..

How does unlimited lives play into this?
