Brother Leather's "Meat Mural" is a music project that focuses on the broad and collaborative quality of music and painting.
Our lives are collections of moments and experiences we share with those closest to us. Each moment that stays with us; falling in love, breaking up, a death, or a birth are all strong cuts of our personal experience. These moments are observed and experienced by those closest to us and create a broad tapestry of human experience. This is the "Meat Mural".
Some of the most profound extensions of the human experience can be found in all different types of art. This project attempts to combine music and painting with relationship and community. The artist draws from the deepest cuts of his emotional experience and combines it with various degrees of input from backers.
The "Meat Mural" is best suited for a gateway such as Kickstarter due to its collaborative focus and nature.
This album will be distributed through digital download, USB card and various pieces of the "Meat Mural". The album also encourages collaboration with the listener in both musical and artistic methods in the form of audio collaboration on the final recording and collaboration in oil painting mediums.
Funds will support final recording costs, mixing, mastering, materials and distribution.
I plan on having regular updates released through my twitter (www.twitter.com/andysmithsmith) and through Facebook (www.facebook.com/brotherleather). Demos can be listened to on sound cloud at www.soundcloud.com/brotherleather.
A meat mural is a paper silhouette of a human head with some type of animal horns that is placed on top of oil paint mixed with organic substance such as dirt, sand or grass. Paint is scraped from the silhouette to create a strong border and a different color of paint mixture is placed on top of the silhouette. Various symbols can be used and the result is a textured representation of collaborative human experience.
The album will be recorded late in the fall and into early winter.
Starting at the $50 pledge, I will get on the phone or Skype with you and we can discuss what piece of creativity you would like to put into the creative process. If it is a melody, it must be original and can be recorded in any variety of ways. If it's a memo from your phone or something recorded in garage band we can work with it. It just needs to be short and simple. We're not trying to incorporate a complete idea, but have your thumbprint in the song somehow. The sounds will be processed in order to make it fit into context, but this best communicates the idea of an experiential "mural". If you want to read something you've written or recite a favorite passage, we can do that as well. The same simple rules apply of keeping the idea short and concise. A phrase or two. If you are more visually inclined, think simple shapes or figures. Do you love rabbits? Penguins? Do you want your own silhouette with a long neck and tiny body? Your head with Antlers? We can do that. Just remember, it's shapes, not detail. The contributions need to remain simple enough to be incorporated into a larger piece.
I am aiming for February of 2012. As the date approaches I will become more specific. I plan on having regular updates released through my twitter (http://www.twitter.com/andysmithsmith) and through Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/brotherleather). If I can get it done earlier than February, I will. But to be fair to the creative process, I don't want to rush it. Give or take a month or so, February is the goal.
