What are RidgeMaps?
RidgeMaps are a beautiful and interesting way for you to explore the terrain of your favorite places. RidgeMaps can be created for any location on the planet to show the natural terrain. Instead of creating horizontal layers with highly detailed contours, RidgeMaps keep the high level detail in the elevation. These beautiful maps are assembled like puzzles, which allow children and adults alike to build their favorite locations in miniature.
Who am I?
I'm Brandon Brooks. I've been creating maps with my laser cutter and laser engraver since 2016. This has been a passion of mine for a long time and I have met many people who also love the maps I make. RidgeMaps are the latest evolution in my map making. You can see some of my earlier work in addition to more RidgeMap photos on my Instagram page @ridgemaps.
What is included in a RidgeMap Kit?
RidgeMaps are sold as a kit. You receive instructions, a base, and all the layers that fit within that base to create the RidgeMap of your choosing. The layers are made from high quality baltic birch plywood. The layers fit tightly within the base, such that no glue is required to make a RidgeMap. All of the layers are numbered sequentially, so assembly is quick. You can assemble a large kit in under 30 minutes.
The base includes the name of the location, a scale bar, and vertical exaggeration details if your RidgeMap has vertical exaggeration.
All RidgeMaps come with a lifetime warranty. If you lose a piece or one breaks, the cost of a replacement piece is on me. Just pay for shipping and I'll send it to you.
What locations are available for RidgeMaps?
RidgeMaps can be made for any location in the US and most locations anywhere in the world. Currently, we have made samples for over 20 locations, including a pre- and post-eruption of Mt. St. Helens. A regularly updated list of example locations can be found here. Custom locations are a part of this Kickstarter. When the project finishes and funding is received, I will send out a form asking people for the location they want.
Where will the money for this project go?
First, the money from this project will fund better equipment to make RidgeMaps. This will allow me to produce higher quality RidgeMaps in a shorter time period, to keep the purchase price low. Secondly, I will create and ship the rewards. Lastly, some of the funds will go to pay for a better website with eCommerce capabilities. This will allow for future orders of RidgeMaps.

Risks and challenges
This is mostly a one person operation, so if the order numbers are much higher than expected, there might be a delay in getting rewards out the door. However, even if there is a high order number, I expect all rewards to go out by early December 2019, as I can hire additional help to get orders fulfilled.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
