The Brooklyn Nutcracker is an updated take on a holiday classic, fusing ballet, hip-hop, an array of world dance genres, and motion sensor technology to create a new tradition for today’s audience.
For the first time, The Brooklyn Nutcracker...
- Graces the stage of the historic Kings Theatre
- Combines all new Classical Chinese dance artists and an Africa-originating Flamenco dancer with the diverse Brooklyn Ballet dancers
- Marries pop & lock party scene moves with 18th century French court dances ... 300+ years in the making!
- Invites hundreds of Brooklyn foster children to experience the excitement for free
When Brooklyn's stately Kings Theatre re-opened its doors in 2015 -- newly renovated after closing in 1977 -- Brooklyn Ballet Founder and Artistic Director Lynn Parkerson suspected this Flatbush Avenue venue would be the perfect spot to present The Brooklyn Nutcracker. On December 14, 2018 at 7pm that vision becomes real as Brooklyn Ballet presents a one-night-only performance of The Brooklyn Nutcracker in its largest venue yet.
Your pledge creates access to world-class Ballet for all
In addition to offering an evening public performance, Brooklyn Ballet stages a matinee performance reserved for students from under-resourced public schools and other community members. Tickets for the matinee are significantly subsidized by Brooklyn Ballet and its partners. Exposure to professional art performance plays a crucial role in a child's education; the engaging and eye-opening experience can lay the foundation for a career in the arts or a lifetime of arts appreciation.
Brooklyn Ballet offers free tickets to hundreds of children from foster care agencies in Brooklyn. Your Kickstarter pledge underwrites a once-in-a-lifetime holiday experience for these children. Audience members at the matinee performance will also include home-schooled students, senior citizens, and adults with intellectual and other disabilities.
Your pledge modernizes a holiday classic
The Brooklyn Nutcracker brings new collaborations to the stage this year. With a strong commitment to honoring the borough’s rich cultural traditions, Brooklyn Ballet premieres the Spanish Dance performed by first place winner of Flamenco Certamen 2016 Aliesha Bryan and Margaret Yuen’s Red Silk Dancers in the Chinese Dance. Integrating these dances makes real Brooklyn Ballet's commitment to showcasing authentic ethnic dance forms and embracing New York City's immigrant traditions.
Support integrating ballet
And as a truly historic first, on December 14th in Flatbush, we're integrating the 18th century French court as we expand our first act party scene to include hip hop, belly dancing, and Native American dance with ballet. Support this piece of dance history!
Pledge to inspire the next dance generation
Alongside a cast of over 30 professional dancers and guest artists, Brooklyn Ballet Youth Ensemble performs in The Brooklyn Nutcracker. These talented up-and-coming dancers are also students at Brooklyn Ballet, and 25% of them are on full or partial scholarship. Two of our youth dancers come to us from our Elevate public school residency program in which we bring lecture-demonstrations and ballet classes to public schools lacking formal arts programming. The Brooklyn Nutcracker is an important training ground for these young artists, and it also inspires the next generation of dancers.
Make sure this multi-cultural, multi-genre production thrives!

Risks and challenges
As a not-for-profit dance company committed to providing dance services for our entire community, we offer tickets at accessible prices. And, we offer free and reduced priced tickets for our community matinee. This means that our box office income does not cover our expenses. Help us to bridge that gap by pledging to our Kickstarter. Thank you for making this project possible!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
