About

Warning: This zine contains references to altering a game you may already think is perfect. It includes depictions of players adding complications to failed rolls, romance-inspired adventures, and more ideas that may shock and disgust grognards. Backer discretion is advised!

Once upon a time, there was a game that changed the course of tabletop gaming for generations. We're not exactly allowed to say its name because a certain licence won't let us actually call it what it is... but we're pretty sure you've heard of it. For many, it's known as "the world's greatest roleplaying game."

Well, this is The World's Greatest Roleplaying Game: The Zine. It's a zine providing an "indie spin" on the 5th edition of this tabletop behemoth, a chance to try out something new for those of you who like to dabble or are finally willing to cave in and play the world's most popular RPG with a few story game ideas in hand. Maybe you'd even like to play a game of players as they actually play the world's greatest roleplaying game to become the ultimate meta roleplaying game! It's time to crack this game open and add some extra flavours... but we need your help to do it.

Warning: THIS ZINE WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THIS KICKSTARTER!!

Different games accomplish different goals to create a unique experience. Even if two games share the same genre, the mechanics can create different styles much like two different directors would present a different take on the same movie. Now consider the existing mechanics for 5e as a movie directed Michael Bay version and another game, such as Fate, Monsterhearts, or Dungeon World, as the same movie directed by an independent filmmaker. That's what we're talking about with an "indie spin."

With WGRG: The Zine, we want to take some of the revolutionary story-driven mechanics from some great indie games and designers you might never have heard of and merge them into the core rules for 5e. Optional rules you can add to whichever campaign or sessions you like. Plus we'll be working with some 5e writers and designers you may already know and letting them add some new ideas into the game they love.

With your support, we can get the ball rolling on making WGRG: The Zine happen. Like something you keep on your tablet or maybe even on your shelf. By meeting our initial goal, we can create and launch our Premiere Issue to take on the world one fan at a time.

Each issue will be produced in a 24-page (approx.) 8.5" by 5.5" booklet format in both PDF and POD from DriveThruRPG. Everyone who writes original material for WGRG: The Zine will be paid at 10 cents per word CAD (or 8 cents per word USD) because miniatures ain't cheap and that cotton ball with toothpicks sticking out can only go so far. All content in WGRG: The Zine will comply with the OGL licence that's been made avaialble for this edition.

Because not everyone has a credit card or may have difficulties backing this project due to credit card issues, you can also support this project through Paypal. Simply send us a direct message here on Kickstarter with your full name and the backer level you'd like to support. But remember... this campaign can only fund if we reach our goal here on Kickstarter! So let's reserve this option for those who need it, ok?

Each issue you back will be available in PDF and POD (print on demand) from DriveThruRPG. But here's the big thing - THIS ZINE WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE THROUGH THIS KICKSTARTER!! If you don't back us, you'll have to wait until we do another one for 2021.

Reaching our first three stretch goals will allow us to release 4 quarterly issues across 2020 and here's how your support can help make that happen.

  •  $2,000 CAD (approx. $1,300 USD): We will publish TWO issues of WGRG: The Zine in 2020.
  •  $3,000 CAD (approx. $2,000 USD): We will publish THREE issues of WGRG: The Zine in 2020.
  •  $4,000 CAD (approx. $2,600 USD): We will publish FOUR issues of WGRG: The Zine in 2020.
  •  $5,000 CAD (approx. $3,400 USD): Every issue of WGRG: The Zine will also include a Phone PDF edition. You'll love it, it's the latest craze in having games on your phone for quick reference during play.
  •  $7,000 CAD (approx. $4,900 USD): Every issue of WGRG: The Zine will feature original black-and-white artwork, compared to the stock art currently slated for this zine.
  •  $10,000 CAD (approx. $7,000 USD): At this level, we will have an art budget for every issue of WGRG: The Zine, compared to the stock art currently slated for this zine.

If this campaign continues past these stretch goals, we have some additional ways to make each issue even better.

While we're still working on lining up a list of D&D and indie designers for this zine, we did want to let you know some of the articles we're working on.

  •  Investigation mechanics for 5e - Turn your dunegon crawl into an archaelogical mystery or adapt 5e for a modern detective story using an optional investigation system inspired by the GUMSHOE system by Robin Laws and published by Pelegrane Press.
  •  Complications on failed rolls - What if you could take away the pass/fail aspect of attack rolls and make those failures add excitement and tension to your game? We're looking into an optional rule that would apply story-based complications onto those failures to keep players on their toes during a wicked battle.
  •  Building a relationship (mechanic) - Just who ARE these people you travel with? On those long journeys from dungeon to dungeon, who do you bond with the most and what lines can you never cross with them? Adding some relationship mechanics can turn your 5e game into a well-produced HBO action/drama series.
  •  How about a high school drama hack of 5e? - Whether your characters are training to become adventurers in one of your world's greatest academies or in a modern world of everyday teens struggling to get through another Monday, it's time to really show what these rules can do!
  •  Alternate death rules - Feel like living on the edge with your characters? Strip away those death saves and walk on the wild side with some alternate rules that could actually make you wish someone memorized a raise dead spell.
  •  The World's Greatest Roleplaying Game: The Game - Imagine a Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) RPG about a group of players playing 5e that takes place while YOU play 5e. Featuring playbooks such as the Rules Lawyer, the Min-Maxer and more, each playbook taps into the pros and cons of each of the most common player types in the hobby to provide in-game moves triggered by the events in your existing game of 5e.

WGRG: The Zine is the brainchild of Jen Adcock (Gnome Stew, Only One Bed) and Todd Crapper (Killshot, Combat Advantage, Key of the Fey). It's going to be a fun and wacky collection of optional material inspired by some of the amazing ideas and mechanics taking place in the independent tabletop space. Real ideas that will work at your table. This zine is for everyone out there who calls themselves polygamerous (patent pending Misdirected Mark Productions) and enjoys playing lots of different games for lots of different reasons. Like you. No, not you. The one looking over your shoulder pretending they're not interested. And yes, it's for you too.

WGRG: The Zine will be published by Broken Ruler Games, an ENnie Award winning tabletop game publisher of games like High Plains Samurai, ScreenPlay, The Deal, and more.

Risks and challenges

There are always risks and challenges to any project and adjustments will need to be made along the way. At Broken Ruler Games, we are committed to making sure our backers are fully aware of the creation process and kept up to date on the progress of our Kickstarters. This is our 6th crowdfunding project and the 3rd involving complete fulfillment with DriveThruRPG. It is a very successful process and one that provides the fewest risks as we are looking to create numerous issues over the span of a full year (and things can drastically change in the publishing world).

This is why we will have all digital and print fulfillment handled by DriveThruRPG and providing all backers who will receive digital copies to have the option to purchase print copies at any point and time. You want to get a few for your friends? Not a problem. You'll only pay the printing and shipping costs to get them to your door.

Finally, this campaign supports the Kickstarter employees who are trying to unionize. Both Jen and Todd have discuss how we, as creators, can support them. Terminating employees who want to form a union is not an action we can support as believers in the rights of Kickstarter's employees who make this site happen. If a boycott of Kickstarter is called for by the workers, we will cancel this campaign and no one will be charged.
