Make a monster part 3: the platypus effect

Posted by Broken Mill (Creator)

It's time to choose what this giant platypus actually does. Since the platypus is a weird combination of duck and mammal, I thought it would be nice if the card has 2 different effects that combine in an interesting way. Here are four things I came up with:

1. A test of Skill - Two effects that are both beneficial, but offer some interesting choices to make. Getting your Skill card back can be very useful, but that -2 power to the Giant Platypus is also nice.

2. Power of the weak - Weak cards lose their effects, but the weakest cards (except for basic cards) get +2 power. There are quite a few 0 power cards with powerful effects, so this enemy could be an interesting threat.

3. Basic balance - A very simple combination that messes with your Basic cards. Maybe hanging on to those Basic 0 cards is not such a bad idea.

4. A shaky start - This one offers an interesting decision again: who should be the one to keep their first hand? The player with the weakest deck? Or the most consistent? Or do you just want to manipulate the starting player token so it ends up with the right player when facing another enemy?

It was very close, but it looks like number 1 is the winner! (my personal favorite as well) I'm a bit sad that we won't get to add flavor text to the platypus, but it's a fun card effect :)
We'll continue with the loot side soon!

I like 1 because it gives a meaningful choice to the players. The others seem to have more random effects, which are fine, but I love effects that provide players with a hard decision rather than waiting to see what happens to them by chance. My two cents.

I like #1 and #2 the most. #3 is ok, and I like #4 the least.

Fun fact: The Platypus is one of the few mammals that actually has venom, only in males and only actively secreted during mating seasons, it paralyzes the other males to allow for easy mating/dominance with their chosen female.

I think #1 is by far the most interesting, because it is a potential choice for every player (if their skill is in the discard). The other ones are just a change, but not a choice. They are unique effects that can change some things (or not, depending on what you draw), but they're just a thing that happens, rather than something you actually did.

@John C: That's a good point actually. Number 4 is dead last though, so you're in luck ;)

Only one I am not wild about is 4 (because I play solo)...

This is so close right now. Number 1 and 2 are at 25 and 24 votes.

Hmmm I like the third one cause keeping 0's is always a fun strategy. More reason for other players to give one single player all their 0's.
