Help Rusty the robot whale in his quest to grow the world's largest rainbow!
Time for more Upgrades!
To guide Rusty to ever higher heights in his altitudinous adventure, you'll need to forge upgrades from rainbow stripes you collect. Upgrades improve and extend ALL of Rusty's awesome attributes and abilities: his speed, his armor, his cloudpowers, his efficiency in converting tasty food into radical rainbows, and his dashing good looks!
Here's one such upgrade: the Color Magnet. You may not know it, but if you power a giant magnet with rainbow energy, its polarity field gets bent into a specialized, spectralized, lightwave attractor-repulser! It can definitely help you get the right bright treats you want. However, beware if enemies have the same color as the treat you are after! There's nothing worse than an unintended Shark Mine to the mouth.
Charge it up!
Stay tuned for more updates including upgrades, technology, and gameplay!
Hello there. We're a handful of guys who make games with darling characters, splashy visuals, and savory gameplay.
We made Catball Eats it All last year with YOUR help, which went on to receive a 4.5-star rating on iTunes App Store over 500+ votes, and was featured in Apple’s “Staff Favorites” section three times. We were even invited to be artists-in-residence at the Leonardo Museum in Salt Lake City (an incredible experience!)
Now we'd like to ask for your help again in bringing you our next creation; which has been marinating and simmering, sautéing and sizzling, with full-bodied fruity notes rising to the surface just now. (Wait until you see how it finishes on the palate.)
We work in a very unique way -- all of our art assets are hand-painted by artist Yis Goodwin (NoseGo) before being photographed and placed in the game. This creates a pretty amazing backlog of paintings you'll have the opportunity to pick up. In addition, we have Khari Mateen working with us to fill out the soundtrack, so expect some amazing soundscapes to accompany your adventure.
Rusty the Robot Whale, Catball's friend, is a discarded, banged-up old robot with a heart of gold. Besides cheffing up some fine cuisine, over his lifetime he’s cultivated one epic aspiration: to make every last person on the entire planet smile at exactly the same moment.
Floating along in the southern tropics during an especially blustery and rainy storm, Rusty ducked under a rocky outcropping to chomp down on one of his favorite island burgers and ponder how he might achieve his goal. After many sumptuous sandwiches, and accidentally falling asleep for a snooze once or twice, he emerged from his cave to see a majestic glow: an enormous, resplendent rainbow racing across the sky from one horizon to the other.
He had found his answer. Using the secret power of eating he learned from the Catball, combined with a bit of engineering ingenuity, he’ll create a rainbow large enough to encircle the entire world.
Rusty is a side-scrolling distance game where you will be sailing the high seas and ascending into space, all while munching colorful treats to grow your rainbow. Integrating light puzzle elements with quick reaction times, you'll be hard pressed to evade dastardly Shark Mines and free-ranging Rubber Duckies. Luckily, Rusty summons up a little storm cloud buddy from his steam spout that strikes baddies down with lightning.
Succeeding means coordinating Rusty's eating, shooting lightning, and managing Rusty's color analyzer, which determines which colors of food he can eat to create rainbow stripes. Snag the right foods at the right places and times to grow your rainbow and progress. Truly effective play will require a few fingers on the screen and some quick, coordinated movement.
Rusty certainly doesn't assume he can make it on his first go though. That's why he's drawn up several schematics for rainbow-based technology. During play, Rusty will get the opportunity to crunch his rainbow stripes into rainbow robot parts that he can spend to upgrade himself, letting him go even higher and further.
The many artistic talents of Team Broken Compass will all contribute strongly to Rusty and, together, we aim to create a hypnotic title of synesthetic brilliance. Playing well will yield mouth-watering visual and aural rewards--colors will burst, sounds will pop, music will bounce, whales will fly. Can you circle the globe with your rainbow and rise into stardom?
Our official sneak-peak catalog of rainbow haters.
OrcaBombs have big personality, and they like to show it by chest-bumping everyone and everything in sight.
They may or may not be friendly, but nobody gets a chance to find out because after a successful chest-bump they can't keep it together, and all that personality comes out in a not-very-constructive way. Rusty finds them disagreeable -- they always ruin any dinner he invites them to. He's not going to let them ruin his rainbow plan though.
Next up, we gotta keep Jerks like this guy from causing a whirlwind of trouble for Rusty... Play your part today.
This is a serious baddy. Meet the Jerk!
The next featured enemy is the perennially grumpy James Badluck.
Upon hearing of Rusty's efforts to build the world's most epic rainbow, James was shocked, angered, and artistically unimpressed all at the same time. Unfortunately, he's been stuck that way ever since.
When Badluck shows up, be ready for a serious multi-tiered battle. He serves as a random boss encounter in Rusty's world. You never know exactly when he's going to appear, but you'll be playing by his rules when he does. Boss battles in Rusty don't entail an increase in overall difficulty given your current progress, but they do require a fast change to a new strategy.
Needless to say, James Badluck is going to do everything he can to keep Rusty down.
Better, faster, Rustier! You may not know it, but Rusty is a technological genius, and is widely considered the world's foremost scholar in rainbow-based mechanical engineering.
First on the upgrades list, the buddy cloud! When Rusty means business, he puffs buddy clouds out of his steam spout. So what is a buddy cloud? It's a deceptively fluffy and totally cumulonimbal engine of creation, destruction, and general good times! Buddy clouds travel along the top of the screen and do something totally useful when tapped. Tap them right and save the day!
Here's the Cool Cloud, an upgraded version of the regular buddy cloud. It can drop frosty flakes and make a hyper enemy "chill out," if you catch the snowdrift.
We love them, and you love them, and we hope you love getting them as much as we love giving them. We've cooked up some pretty wonderful accoutrements for you that are sure to satisfy. You can see the short list over on the right, but here are some details for each.
Rusty the Rainbow Whale for iOS: This is the game, and despite all the other cool stuff below, this is what you are helping fund! We are passionate about our art, and we're looking forward to bringing you an amazing title!
Rusty the Rainbow Whale Postcard: Even though you may think "just a postcard," we take our postcards seriously, and we make them kind of special. The postcard itself will be a beautiful piece of artwork specifically tailored to the task, and it will carry a personal thank you from us to you.
Rusty's Tasty Cookbook!: Ah ha! Because Rusty is a master chef in his spare time, we thought we should share his tastiest, most savory recipes with you. He specializes in sandwiches, and so will this cookbook! Besides being fun to look at, this will include some great and unique tropics-themed treats for you to eat.
In-Game Digital Soundtrack: Every rockin' game needs a rockin' soundtrack, and for this outing we have the incredibly talented Khari Mateen on our side. Expect some super smooth tunes that sound as good outside of the game as in it.
Rainbow Whale T-Shirt: Rusty is a stylin' whale, as far as whale's go. He's a little worse for wear, but he sports more colors than any other whale under the sun. He's definitely stylin' enough to hang out on your shirt, and he'll make you look sharp while doing it.
Rainbow Whale Apron: Rusty's ability to cook delicious food satisfies even the Catball. Legend has it that is you wear this Apron, he'll imbue some of his cooking powers onto you.
Rainbow Whale iPhone Case: Rusty has taken a hit or two, but he keeps on ticking. Let him take a hit or two for your phone -- he'll make it look good at the same time!
Be a Beta-Tester: Quality assurance is a key part of polishing any game. We would love to bring some of you into this process. In addition to getting early access to the game, your feedback will help us put the final tweaks on the game that make it feel just perfect.
Unique Rusty Skin: Continuing in the tradition of Catball Eats it All, we're going to make several versions of Rusty. We love our characters so much we can't make just one of them. Here's your opportunity to help us craft one of those Rusty's.
We want to bring the Rusty's Rainbow to you. We need at least 5000 to cover new licenses on game development software, plugins, sound design, music assets, publishing costs, development costs including tacos, pizzas, coffee, human food, cat food, coffee, kitkats, espressos, cappuccinos, and calamari.
Of course, anything beyond that would really help us push the envelope in what we're creating! More time = more in-game characters, challenges, bosses, music, achievements, overall polish and happiness.
Thank you for reading!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Developing a full game from concept to release is a lengthy undertaking, requiring expertise in various fields, and a good bit of coordination across multiple people. The technical development itself is challenging, with the game being made in Unity 3D and porting out to iOS on multiple software versions and screen sizes. Our team is spread across 4 different states in 3 different time zones.
However, we’re no stranger to the difficulties. Over our years we have learned much about what it takes to actually ship a game. We created Catball in the same conditions, on time, at our announced launch date, with excellent feedback (see the ratings for yourself!).
At its core, the real difficulties in shipping a game lie not with the technological complexity or immense amount of work to be done, but with maintaining the dedication to see it to the end. We’re absolutely in love with our darling Rusty, having already spent countless hours every week coding and painting and Skyping, and we’re eager to free him to the world. This is happening.
