Curly Fu is an easy-to-learn, area enclosure, tile flipping, grid movement boardgame for 2-4 players developed by Gérard Pierson. Secret missions, hidden treasures and unique bonuses guarantee high re-playability.
Choose your favorite theme from Detective (Curly Fu), Far-East (Urashima), Scary (Dark Matter), or Cyber-fairytale (Spellbreaker). It has been in development for a year and a half and in that time, it has gone through many transformations and shifts, until we were satisfied with the result.
This Kickstarter is for the english edition of Curly Fu. The game material itself is language neutral, the different cards however have English texts.
One of the biggest decisions was to go a radically different way in this Kickstarter by avoiding tons of fancy 'upgrading' stretch-goals but rather give you all the possible material improvements like linen-finished cards, or custom silk-printed wooden meeples that normally call for your extra money, right from the start.
So, in order to offer you something brand-new (as to our best knowledge this has never been offered before in a Kickstarter), we want you to be able to choose your own theme!

Once we hit the funding goal, we will let all current backers vote on what the next theme will be. Voting closes shortly before the next theme is funded, and the most popular theme will be announced. This theme will then be unlocked as the next stretch goal. We do this again for the third theme and finally for the fourth. Of course we hope to get enough support throughout the campaign to produce all four themes.
Curly Fu will always be part of the lot, but it depends on the community if one or all the other themes reach production level too!
There is however one exception to our 'no-classic' stretchgoals rule: the 3D print-it-yourself-miniatures (see below). Why? Because we really, really love them and hope you will too ;o)
Once you decide to pledge, you will have the choice between the 'Curly Fu' or the "Solo" levels. 'Solo' allows you to delay your choice of theme until the pledgemanager. So, if you choose 'Solo' as a pledgelevel you can pick your favorite theme amongst the themes that have been unlocked during this campaign. In case no other theme was unlocked 'Solo' still gives you the right for 'Curly Fu'. There are also pledge-bundles available with 2 or more themes as an option. Each bundle offers you the choice between any unlocked versions (including Curly Fu).
Our artists have already begun working on the different themes and games material, however, the 3 runner-up themes will only become a reality if you back this project sufficiently!
In order to give you a good view of what is awaiting you througout the different themes, here are some pictures (work in progress).
The How-to-play is synonimous for all 4 themes! Of course, any funded theme will fully be 'translated' into it's own 'world', including all Tiles, Cards, Meeples etc...

We believe that every good game gets even better when it has an interesting story to go with it. So, we went out looking for inspiration in the real world because nothing is better than life itself. But, this all remains a work of fiction nonetheless! In the end names, characters, places, and incidents are either products of our imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, are therefore to be considered purely coincidental.
Curly Fu and the search for Fame. Ever since Curly Fu’s legendary assistant Peanut left, she is looking for a worthy successor. Four detectives get the unusual opportunity to compete for her recognition, each of them hoping to become Curly Fu’s next deputy. Cliffden House has fallen prey to a fire!
Your objective is to search the rooms of the old mansion for clues, scattered around the hallways. To do so, you will in turn need to use the power of the old parchments, outsmart your opponents by using secret passages, and lure them into rooms without an (easy) exit. As fame can be lost and found in more than one way, only the detective with the most fame at the end of the search will be declared winner of the game and step into Peanuts’ footprints.
Dark Matter and the search for Light. Very little is known since the aftermath of a plane crash, which leaves the 4 surviving passengers on what seems to be an uninhabited island. Their survival is threatened by a mysterious force that rules an old greenhouse, and that the island's malevolent inhabitants simply call the Dark Matter.
Follows the growing conflict between the survivors and the clash between faith and science. While resolving old mysteries and posing new ones the 4 that go only by the color of their clothes are forced to find the few remaining light sources that are left. Otherwise an unknown catastrophic event will occur.
Urashima and the search for Happiness. The story of Urashima, is about a fisherman who rescues a turtle and is rewarded with a visit under the sea to the kingdom of God Ebisu. On his return Urashima, a good and wise person, gives his servant Hikoboshi the box that he received from Ebisu. He instructs Hikoboshi never to open it, otherwise all happiness will be lost.
Orihime, the fisherman's younger daughter is secretly in love with Hikoboshi. Independent and fierce, she feels more attracted to adventure than a quiet life by the sea and tries to convince Hikoboshi to leave with her. Hikoboshi being respectful of the old traditions is convinced that he must buy Orihime's freedom from her father, so he eventually opens the box hoping to find a bride’s token in it, worthy of his love for her.
Urashima, being well aware of his daughter’s secret love affair, however was actually testing Hikoboshi's obedience, rather than his wealth, in order to determine if he was worthy of Orihime. He simply wanted to avoid her becoming a Geisha like her older sister Uki, who had chosen that path in order to support her family since her mother died. Something her father had never approved of.
Now that Hikoboshi had opened the box, all happiness was indeed lost, and left them no choice but to go find another turtle that would once more show them the way to Ebisu and happiness.
Spellbreaker and the search for Power Stones. When they were only children, the King kept telling his two daughters Snow Blanche and Rose Rouge the story about a mythical machine called Spellbreak, that lies buried away in the depths of the Golem Caves. “Nobody has seen it in motion since the great battle of Dwarves against the Golems since the only power source to operate it was destroyed during that same battle.” The King used to mysteriously lower his voice before going on: “My father told me, and his father before him, that hidden away from all Mankind, Dwarves and Golems, deep below this very castle, lie blue Power Stones holding such energy that the machine could in fact be operated again, and that he who controls the machine controls all magic and can break any magic spell ever cast.”
Many years later, after losing his first wife Isabella to an unknown sickness, the King decided to marry Queen Andoria. It was not long before he too fell sick and the doctors were helpless again. That was when Snow Blanche and Rose Rouge discovered it was all Queen Andoria's doing! The only help they could think of now, was finding the Power Stones and activate the ancient machine one more time in order to break Andoria’s spell before it was too late.
What the sisters ignored was, that their search for the Power Stones did not stay unnoticed by the Dwarf King who saw a unique opportunity to seize the kingdom, which again led the Stone Golems to send their strongest warrior, in order to get a hold of the Power Stones before the Dwarf King could. The question now being: who will become the next Spellbreaker and ruler of the kingdom?
In order to make things easy for you we will include all the typical high end, quality material that got so popular in the many excellent Kickstarters before this. Per theme, in means of game material, we are talking about:
- 49 double sided tiles
- 4 custom shaped, silk-screen-printed wooden character meeples
- 4 custom shaped, silk-screen-printed wooden score markers
- 20 Parchment cards
- 10 Unexpected cards
- 16 Clue cards
- 1 score track
- 1 rules booklet
All cards will be 58*88mm, 320g card paper, with a varnished, linen finish. All tiles will be 45*45mm, 2mm 115g cardboard, with a varnished, linen finish.
Yes, we know, every successful Kickstarter campaign these days offers a whole bunch of crazy-good-looking 3D miniatures. What about us? Well, in order to keep things at decent price levels our games will be manufactured in Poland and include wooden silk-screen printed meeples as explained above. Does this mean there will be no fancy 3D miniatures included? Yes and No. IF the campaign is successful enough, we will include printable 3D files for every character in the game. Potentially we are talking about 16 miniatures here. So it is really up to you if you want this to happen!
That also explains one of the few classic stretch-goals our campaign has after all. Other than that we want you to get the best possible stuff our polish producer can offer, right from the start!

Any of you that have already backed a game on Kickstarter know that shipping cost can be a real bummer. In order to keep things simple, yet effective, we have chosen to work with a logistics operator, based in Germany, who can guarantee us speedy, trackable delivery, at fair rates. EU copies will therefore be shipped from within Germany with VAT paid!
Expected shipping costs for a single game:
- To Germany: about 5 EUR (VAT included)
- To EU: about 10 EUR (VAT included)
- Worldwide - we are still figuring out the best way to ship internationally. If we get a significant number of backers from a single country (i.e. USA), we'll look for a local re-distributor in order to cut down on your costs!
Note: International Backers outside of the EU will be responsible for any import fees, brokerage or delivery surcharges, or applicable taxes that may be levied after we have shipped your package.
We understand that shipping to our international friends can be cost prohibitive and that others have found creative ways to mitigate some of this cost. As a small company however, we have to simply pass our shipping cost on to our backers. We hope you understand.
In addition, it is our goal to continue to develop our network of awesome international partners that we have worked with until now, to localize Curly Fu for game markets around the world.
Gérard Pierson is a Luxembourg-based social education worker. As such he worked in a half-open prison for 16 years. Today he works in an elementary school with children that have special educational needs.
At the age of 17, he freelanced as a cartoonist and comic author for some Luxemburgish magazines and newspapers (Forum, Tageblatt, ...). At the age of 32, he started creating board games, 5 of them have since been published. He regularly participates in board game designer contests (i.e. Boulogne-Billancourt) and has won several prizes since. RoboRama (with co-authors) shown below is just one example. It received the Dice Tower "Seal of Approval" and was nominated for the "2017 Mensa Mind Spielepreis" in the category "short gameplay ".
Some of his favorite comic authors are André Franquin, Lewis Trondheim, Enki Bilal, Moebius and Alejandro Jodorowsky. He favours abstract combinatorial games like Hive, Mixtour or The Gipf Project, and for his own pleasure "streamlined" games, like Sun Tzu, Sail to India or Splendor. Amongst his favorite board game designers are Alex Randolph, Leo Colovini, Wolfgang Kramer, Michael Kiesling, Kris Burm and Dieter Stein.
Curly Fu is Gérard's 25th gamecreation.
We have chosen to work with 3 different talented people from around the world. Originally, there were even 4, but due to personal reasons our only female artist unfortunately had to abandon the project before completion. Luckily for us Jason de Ocampo was so kind to step up and his amazing talent can be seen not only in Curly Fu, our main theme, but also in Spellbreaker.
Jason de Ocampo
As mentioned Jason is our artist for Curly Fu, plus he comitted to create Spellbreaker. He is a freelance artist based in the Philippines. He works as a character illustrator and concept artist with various companies. His favorite artists are James Jean, Erak Note and Johannes Vob.
When not illustrating he goes food tripping with his wife and 2 year old son. He also loves video games like the Dark Souls series, Monster Hunter and Borderlands. He also draws mangas but never publishes them anywhere.
Ben is responsible for the theme Urashima. He is a freelance illustrator from Brussels. Inspired by comics (such as Moebius, K. Otomo, H. Miyazaki, G. Rosinski, B. Cloonan, M. Magnola,...) and Japanese woodblock art (mostly Utagawa Kuniyoshi), his work blends ink drawings with digital art.
When he's not drawing, he likes to play Conan the board game, read Joe Abercrombie's First Law, admire Audubon's bird paintings, watch The Last Kingdom on Netflix, play Inside (the video game) or listen to Dawn Wall (while drawing, so this one doesn't really count).
Erel designed Dark Matter. He is an illustrator, based in Surabaya, Indonesia, who works in gaming & animation industry. He specializes in environment design and keyframe illustration. His work is influenced by both master painters like Saul Tepper, Norman Rockwell, & Mead Schaeffer, and also by modern digital painters, such as Jaime Jones, Ryan Meinerding, Eytan Zana and many more.
Besides art, his interests include classic motorcycle, jazz music and film photography. On his day off, he likes to go travelling with his friends. His biggest passion is to be able to tell a story that brings out the best in everyone who reads it.
Risks and challenges
Our experience with our previous campaign, Canopy Walk, has provided a solid foundation for us to build on. We plan to avoid delays and common pitfalls by paying special attention to the following areas and building on previous experience:
Art and Design.
The art and design for the game is nearly complete so we'll be ready to print shortly after the close of the campaign. We always like to show you that we mean business by paying for the art and design upfront!
Playtesting and Reviewing.
Curly Fu has been tested by many different playtesters and even a bunch of game designers. We have sent numerous prototypes to a variety of reviewers. We want to earn your trust by providing you with a solid product that has been thoroughly tested and reviewed by folks from varying backgrounds and perspectives.
This is second Kickstarter project we run for BroadGames and we have helped with several other successful campaigns. Also, having spent many years working in customer service, we understand the importance of treating backers with respect and following through with projects.
Of course, there are always unexpected circumstances that pop up, but we promise to communicate every step of the way and do our best to use creative problem solving when challenges pop up.
