CASSADAGA is a short docu-narrative hybrid set in central Florida at the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp.
Skeptical Donna accompanies her elderly friend Julianne on a day trip to commune with the dead and pray for winning lotto numbers. In a town of mystics and mediums, their different attitudes towards coincidence and spirituality guide their experience.
The script draws upon this community and the people who live there in order to examine the different ways we relate to the kind of truths that you can’t see or touch.
The Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp was founded by a traveling medium in the late 1800’s and is now a small community in central Florida dedicated to Spiritualism and “mediumship”, or the ability to communicate with the dead. The 55 acre town is home to 55 residents, many of whom offer medium services from their living rooms and kitchens.
The film incorporates interviews with members of the community. Although small, the town is divided by varying philosophies and personalities.
CASSADAGA is a dark comedy set against the backdrop of a wilted Florida landscape.
We're in the home stretch and need that last boost to make this happen! Anything helps!
Thanks to the Austin Film Society and Kodak, the film will be shot on super 16MM Kodak film stock. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the processing.
We're also getting our equipment in-kind from MPS!
The funds raised here will go to paying our cast and crew a modest rate, flying folks down to Florida, housing, meals, production design, vehicle rentals and everything that goes into the finishing process.

She thought she wanted to be a neuroscientist but then realized it involved a lot of cutting up rats and stuff. So she set out to learn the craft of camera and lighting, taking every opportunity to try something new and to remind everyone to stay hydrated.
Risks and challenges
Filmmaking is hard and our project is no different. We're heading down to Florida in the middle of the summer! And we're shooting on film! This shoot will certainly have its challenges. However, we've assembled a crew of highly skilled people who we've known for years and could not feel more thrilled to go make this film with everybody.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
