You shouldn’t have to worry about the dangers your electrical outlets pose to your loved ones, including your pets. Which is why we’ve created an electrical outlet that protects you and your family from shock hazards.
And with the Brio Connected Home Safety System (Coming 2015) you'll be protected against other common dangers like smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide.
Each year, thousands of children and adults are injured or killed through electrical hazards, fire and other common household dangers, but it shouldn't be this way.
- Brio's default state is off (0V)
- Normal electrical outlets are always live (120V)
- Once our embedded sensor detects a valid plug, not a finger or knife, the outlet switches to 24V "sensing" mode.
- In sensing mode, Brio looks for the right level of resistance, which tells it it's an appropriate appliance like a lamp.
- Installation is quick and easy, Brio installs as any normal outlet would and anyone can do it!
Brio can help protect families across the country. We are making it our mission to create homes and daycare centers where children can play, laugh, and flourish without the hazards of traditional electrical outlets.
The road to produce this product has been long and challenging. Along the way, we've been approached with heartbreaking stories of children who have been injured by electrical outlets. This has only further fueled our passion and prompted us to reach out to you for help.
We believe that a child should never be injured due to electrical outlets, which is why we have overcome so many obstacles to bring you Brio. We have the solution, and we want to see that solution improve lives, save children, and protect families who don't have to be hurt by such tragic accidents.
To be successful in this mission we need your help!
- Each year, more than 2,400 children (that's 7 children per day) are admitted to hospital emergency rooms for electrical shock or burn injuries caused by tampering with a wall outlet.
- Each year more than 30,000 non-fatal shock accidents occur.
- According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 70% of child-related electrical accidents occur at home, when adult supervision is present.

When you support Brio, you're not only creating a safer home for your family, you're helping us reduce these statistics. This means you can help us reduce child-related electrical accidents that occur in the home.
Building a Safer World with Brio
To show our commitment to creating a safer world for your children, you may have noticed two special reward offerings. When you give either $139 or $269 you'll not only receive award winning Brio outlets, you'll also make it possible for us to donate a Brio outlet to a childcare facility. Once Kickstarter has ended, we'll work with licensed preschools and daycare centers to replace their outlets with Brio safe electrical outlets; something we would not be able to do without your help!
As Seen In:
"Brio looks like the sort of intelligent, safety-minded solution that ought to be just as ubiquitous as electricity itself." - Ry Crist for CNET
"Any household with small roaming humans inevitably has to block its electrical sockets from tiny probing fingers. But most of the childproof measures out there—plastic plugs, sliding faceplates—can still be impregnated by determined hands. This outlet prototype wouldn't supply any electricity to its sockets until a plug is inserted..." - Alissa Walker for Gizmodo
"Brio aims to make your home safer, particularly for small children. It’s designed to eliminate the risk of electric shock when foreign objects (fingers, paperclips, army men, etc.) get jammed into the outlet. How? Well unlike traditional outlets, which are always live, Brio will remain “off” until it senses an actual plug with a valid electrical load." - Drew Prindle for Digital Trends
Brio’s current default mode is off versus normal electrical outlets which are always live coming in at 120 volts. Brio’s outlet has embedded sensors which detect if there is a valid plug – not a finger or a knife – in the socket. - Jennifer Hicks for Forbes
"Unlike your current power outlet, Brio’s default state is off. That means when nothing’s plugged in it can’t shock you, while a regular outlet is always running at 120 volts. Brio can also tell the difference between a real plug and a finger or a knife." - Jacob Kleinman for Techno Buffalo
"One of the most basic elements of any home is in many ways patently unsafe. If you’ve ever been shocked by a power outlet (or had the misfortune of experiencing a small child getting shocked accidentally), then you’ll understand the concept of Brio, a new kind of power outlet designed to eliminate shock hazards" - Kathy Mcdonald for Not Impossible Tomorrow
Award Winning Technology

Brio Safe Technology: How does it Work?
Brio Wall Unit: Breakthrough Anti-Shock Microelectronics
Brio’s patented state-of-the-art microprocessor technology virtually eliminates shock hazards by sensing electrical demand and controlling power accordingly. Before delivering current, an embedded sensor in the unit differentiates between the insertion of a power plug and an object needing protection. Brio outlets contain advanced technology, however they are installed the same way as your traditional outlets.
But Brio isn't only a safe outlet, it's going to be part of a complete safety net that helps you provide your family a safer home.
The additional smart features below will be available August of 2015.
We currently have developed a fully functioning Brio SAFE outlet which we are able to share with you through Kickstarter. Right now we are also in development of the next generation of Brio SMART outlets that not only protect your family from the risk of electrical shock, but also have the ability to communicate wirelessly with sensors and a mobile app that can alert you to dangers like flood, fire, deadly carbon monoxide and more.
To create a full Brio home safety net, we recommend a configuration of Brio SAFE outlets and at least one Brio SMART outlet (depending on room size) and sensors.
Your Brio SMART outlets will communicate with the sensors that you've placed around your home. A mobile application installed on your smart phone or tablet will also alert you to any dangers, whether you're home or away. Brio will always be working to keep your family and your home safe.
- Over 3,000 deaths occur each year due to fire in the home.
- Unintentional carbon monoxide (CO) exposure accounts for an estimated 500 deaths in the United States each year.
- The long-term effects of CO poisoning contribute to more than 2,000 deaths in the United States annually.
- 8,000 to 15,000 people each year are examined or treated in hospitals for non-fire related CO poisoning.
- About 1 in 55 insured homes have a property damage claim caused by water damage or freezing each year.

Advanced Wireless Communications (Coming Soon)
To keep your family out of danger, the Brio home safety system uses a network of wireless sensors positioned throughout your home. Each of these sensors are designed to detect things like smoke, water and carbon monoxide (CO).
They’re easy to place—even as a fun family project. When they detect smoke, water or harmful carbon monoxide gas, these tokens send a signal to the Brio wall unit, which instantly communicates with your Brio mobile app and an in-room alarm so you can react quickly and effectively.
Brio Mobile App (Coming Soon)
With the Brio mobile app on your smartphone or tablet, you’ll feel protected wherever you are—in or out of the house. Advanced wireless technology combines to send you instant alerts from your Brio home monitoring system when it detects dangers like flooding, smoke and carbon monoxide.
