Bridge Records has embarked on the recording of Volume 8 of its Poul Ruders series. The recording features the premiere recording of two major Ruders pieces performed by soprano Susanna Phillips, Denmark's Odense Symphony Orchestra, and conductor Scott Yoo. Danish composer Poul Ruders is known for his dark, starkly beautiful works, including the opera "The Handmaid's Tale", based on Margaret Atwood's dystopic science fiction novel, and adaptations of Edgar Allen Poe for the concert hall. His compositions have been recognized with multiple Grammy nominations, and critical praise from reviewers throughout the world.
Ruders's Symphony Number 3 has the subtitle, "Dream Catcher". The piece was composed in 2006 and consists of 30 minutes of music in two large movements. The first movement is slow, and features some of the most sensually intense music in the Ruders catalog. It leads directly into a virtuoso scherzo played at a breakneck tempo. The other major composition on Volume 8 is "The Offred Suite", composed in 2000. Scored for soprano and large orchestra, "Offred" is drawn from "The Handmaid's Tale". The soprano soloist on this recording is the rising young star, Susanna Phillips. Ms. Phillips has just scored major successes at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Minnesota Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera. This recording marked her first performance in Denmark.
Bridge's previous Ruders recordings have received glowing press. Volume Six was nominated for a Grammy and was nominated as Gramophone's New Music Disc of the Year"; Volume Seven was chosen "Best of the Year" by the San Jose Mercury News, and was awarded Gramophone's "Critic's Choice" and the International Record Review's "Outstanding" citation. Poul Ruders has had a huge impact on American music in recent years. The composer's Symphony No. 4 was commissioned by the Dallas Symphony and premiered in Dallas last year, and the New York Philharmonic played new Ruders orchestral works for three seasons in a row, including the commissioning of his huge "Final Nightshade". Bridge Records is devoted to supporting this great artist, and turns to the Kickstarter community for assistance in funding first recordings of these important Ruders compositions. We have accomplished the first stage of this project and have the music recorded. We now ask you for assistance in editing, mixing, mastering and compact disc production of this music.
Any additional money, beyond the $6,000 will be spent on the recording of volume 9 of the Poul Ruders edition. Ideally, we'd like to be able to make a video documentary of the recording.
