About this project
Protected by their thick, winter coats, the American Bison is an animal that has survived in North America for millions of years.
Bison fiber is a sustainable yet largely underutilized natural fiber - however it has many characteristics that make it perfect to use as outerwear insulation.
Utilizing the power of Bison, we have created B100 Fill™ insulation from Bison fiber collected from ranchers across the USA. We have used this insulation in two jacket styles that have been purposely designed and crafted to keep you warm and comfortable outdoors, no matter what mother nature throws at you.
The Bison Snap Jacket & The Ultimate American Jacket are both available for pre-order through this Kickstarter campaign. Both are being sold at a significant discount to what they will sell at after this campaign. Pre-order today!
The Ultimate American Jacket™ is a 4-layer, waterproof winter jacket made entirely in the USA from the most authentic American ingredients.
With a removable vest and 14 pockets, it’s a jacket with the comfort and versatility to take you through all stages of winter and whatever the season may throw at you.
A waterproof and breathable shell makes you invincible to the harsh realities of winter, protecting you from wind, rain, sleet and snow.
Available in three colors in both a men’s fit and a women’s fit - its heritage inspired design ensures that it will never go out of style. The Ultimate American Jacket is backed by a Lifetime Guarantee.
Support this project by preordering one or more of the The Ultimate American Jackets. As a backer, you are receiving this jacket at a significant discount compared to the retail price these will sell for when they launch in stores next Fall.
Looking for additional product from us? Consider The Bison Snap Jacket (below). Also, a variety of add on rewards are available to backers. See the Add On Menu by scrolling to the bottom of this project page for more information.
What do you wear during the transition months between seasons, chilly summer evenings, or during the winter if you live somewhere it doesn’t get blistering cold?
Introducing The Ultimate American Jacket's cool little cousin:
A water repellent jacket insulated with B100 Fill. Wear it like a shirt or a jacket, this sleek snap jacket can be worn comfortably anywhere between 32 to 70 degrees due to bison fiber’s unique temperature regulating properties.
The Bison Snap Jacket uses B100 Fill that is ½ the thickness of what we use in The Ultimate American Jacket - we then quilt the insulation onto water repellent nylon fabric and construct a lightweight, functional, and versatile jacket.
We designed The Ultimate American Jacket because we wanted to make the world’s best winter jacket out of the most authentically American ingredients. We accomplished that (Read the rest of this campaign page and you'll probably agree). We designed the Bison Snap Jacket because we wanted to make a jacket utilizing the power of bison that can be worn outside of winter or by people who live in more temperate climates. Snap up one of these and you can be the judge of that.
The Bison Snap Jacket is the perfect complement to The Ultimate American Jacket. Buy them together and save.
The Bison Snap Jacket is unisex. True to size for men (if you are normally a large, go with a large). Downsize 1 size for women (if you are normally a medium, get a small, etc). You won't have to choose your size or color at the time of backing the project - we'll ask for these details once the campaign is over.
The interior of The Ultimate American Jacket™ uses 100% wool fleece from North Carolina that acts as both an insulating liner and a removable vest. Wear the vest alone. Wear the shell alone. Or wear them together. Don’t let winter get the best of you - adapt to it.
The ultra-warm, weather resistant hood is insulated with B100 Fill™, has 3-panels for comfort and shape, and a reinforced brim for increased visibility during the rain or snow. The hood is fully detachable and can be stored in one of the jacket’s hip pockets.
Pockets are important, especially in a jacket. Whether you are on the slopes or walking to the office, it’s important for a jacket to have the right pockets to hold all your essentials. Designed with function and usability in mind, we added secure pockets for your phone, wallet, sunglasses and more. Most importantly, we included wool-fleece lined hand warming pockets in the front of the jacket.
The Ultimate American Jacket™ has 10 exterior and 4 interior pockets.
The Ultimate American Jacket’s outer-shell is a waterproof and breathable nylon fabric made in Rhode Island by a supplier that makes technical fabrics for the US military. The fabric won’t stretch and it won’t shrink. Crafted for outdoor use and tested for durability (abrasion resistance of 1820 cycles via standard ASTM D3884).
Waterproof fabric is only the first step towards a fully waterproof shell like that of the Ultimate American Jacket™. We protected openings in the jacket with water-resistant YKK zippers. The main zipper has 2-way functionality, allowing you to open it from the top or the bottom. The storm flap adds a classic style to the front of the jacket, while providing additional protection for the main zipper.
Under the shell, the jacket features taped seams - protecting the jacket from allowing any moisture into the seams, which helps keep your body free from any moisture or cold air, helping to maintain your core temperature warmth.
The shell protects the good stuff...the special sauce that defines this jacket: The B100 Fill™. With Bison fiber as it’s core component, we blended just enough recycled polyester to bond the fibers together and give the insulation strength necessary to last a lifetime. Unlike our Ultimate American Socks which utilized the Bison’s “down”, the fibers we use for B100 are the coarser, longer, outer guard hairs of the Bison. They are hollow, and therefore lightweight. They are easily compacted, yet resilient; creating an insulation with high loft (read = puffy like down feathers).
The American Bison is unique to North America. At roughly 2,000 pounds they are the largest land mammal to roam the continent. They are often considered the most majestic and fiercest animal in the country’s national parks and preserves. Yet despite their importance to the landscape and people, American Bison were nearly hunted to extinction by 1890, at which time there were fewer than 800 left surviving. Luckily, the story did not end there. Protected by legislation, conservationists, and breeding programs of privatized ranchers – the Bison population is now near 500,000 and they are no longer an endangered or threatened species.
Bison fiber is a largely underutilized natural fiber, however, it has many characteristics that makes it perfect to use in outerwear insulation.
Our B100 Fill has been tested at an independent fabric testing lab in NYC and has a high thermal resistance rating of 1.72 clo. When all 4-layers are together, the jacket has a clo value of 4.51.
Clo is used to measure the thermal insulation of clothing. Whereas 0 represents someone when naked, 0.6 clo would represent summer clothing, 2 clo a ski outfit, 3 clo light polar equipment, and above 4 clo is suitable for the intense cold of polar climates. But due to the properties of bison fiber and a technical outer-shell fabric, you don't have to live in Siberia to make full use of The Ultimate American Jacket™.
The Ultimate American Jacket™ was designed to keep you warm in a wide range of temperatures. Bison fiber is naturally temperature regulating. This is why Bison can survive the heat of Texas summers and the blistering cold of Yellowstone’s winters. So despite the jacket's high clo rating and ability to keep you warm at up to -30°F, the bison fiber's properties combined with a breathable shell ensures that the jacket won't overheat you at higher temperatures.
Let the wool vest take you through chilly fall evenings to brisk spring mornings. Wear the shell alone from -10° to 45°F. Or wear the entire coat, hood and all, for protection from any polar vortex that may be heading your way.
Our goal was to design a jacket with timeless style that could stand up to the elements on the ski slope, but be just as functional on the streets of Philadelphia. With classic colors and heritage-inspired parka pockets, The Ultimate American Jacket™ is just at home this year as it would have been in the 1950s. And it will continue to feel at home in 2050.
In addition to classic styling, we considered all design elements to maximize mobility and comfort for the wearer. When you wear The Ultimate American Jacket™ it moves the way you need it to move. Whether you cross-country or backcountry ski, hike or climb, ice fish or ice skate, this jacket was built for outdoor activity.
The Ultimate American Jacket’s sleeves have a cuff to hem gusset that creates an articulated sleeve and elbow. A bi-swing back provides additional flexibility and mobility in the back.
Both the articulated sleeves and bi-swing back help minimize reach migration (jacket riding up on your back when you raise arms) and enhance flexibility which results in increased comfort and reach.
Measurements refer to body size, not the garment dimensions. All measurements are in inches.
The women's jacket has all the same great features as the men's jacket that is featured in the above lifestyle pictures and video, but with a flattering feminine fit it is the perfect winter jacket for the girl looking for a fashionable and functional jacket in her winter wardrobe.
The end of each sleeve has a strap that can be tightened around your wrist. This keeps moisture and air out while keeping the sleeve from coming over your hand.
Color and sizes are selected by a survey that will be sent to you at the completion of this campaign. Simply back the project for the number of jackets you want and we will ask you for these details later.
A pull string in the waist of the jacket allows you to fit the jacket to your specific body type. Easily cinch the waist in to give it a flattering, tailored appearance.
It’s often the small things that take something from good to great. We like to think every detail was nailed when designing this jacket.
Microfiber lined glasses/sunglass pocket protects your lenses, and durable polyester thread stitching ensures strong seams.
Semi-bellowed pockets with reinforced bottoms provide additional storage capacity in the hip pockets. A pull tab at the bottom of an inside zippered pocket makes closing the zipper easier.

Risks and challenges
We have extensive experience developing products and taking them to market at United By Blue.
The main risks associated with the Ultimate American Jacket are supply chain risks. As we are developing a new supply chain that relies on natural fibers and a network of small businesses throughout the country - everything from the weather to an understaffed factory can slow things down. Another risk relates to supply/demand. We expect this project to generate a lot of interest and preorders for The Ultimate American Jacket. Throughout the entirety of the project we will monitor how much material (bison, fabric, wool fleece, zippers, etc) we need to purchase in order to fulfill the orders. If any component is in short stock compared to what we need, this can cause unforeseen delays. We have been preparing months (some would say years!) for this, so whatever the challenge may be - we will overcome it together.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
