About

Quick summary of our goals:

  • To build up to 5 instruments to be used in our research project
  • To build as many instruments as fast as we can for individuals that need their music back in their lives.

The Lolo is an adaptive instrument built for folks that suffer from a wide range of disabilities that result in a loss of dexterity from their hands and arms.  It was originally designed for my grandfather who suffered a number of strokes and could no longer hold his guitar, let alone form the chords while strumming.  I became determined to build an acoustic guitar that he could use from his wheelchair and maybe... Just maybe begin to increase the function of his arm and hand.  Unfortunately he passed away before I completed the guitar. Please... Go here to read the full story and see pictures of the build. While you're there, say "Hi" to my grandfather.  We called him Lolo.  www.beholdthelolo.simplesite.com

Lolo

There is no question that giving a person the ability to create music has a significant effect on their quality of life.  You can see it in the person's smile when they strum the first chord.  You can hear it in the laughter that surrounds them as they play a song that, silly as it may be, is cradled by their heart.  Every single person on this planet should be given the chance to experience that feeling.

After Lolo passed away I decided to explore all the therapeutic possibilities for this instrument.  For the past 6 months I've been working with doctors and students at Missouri State University, in order to further develop the handles as well as watch the overall effect it has on a patient's mobility and morale.  While the university does not endorse products, they have an amazing staff dedicated to research.

We have just begun to learn how this instrument will aid in a patient's therapy.  We need more research.  That is one of the reasons we're here.  Dr. Jason Shaw, along with his colleges, are applying for a research grant in order to gain a better understanding of how music, with this guitar in particular, effects the healing process.  They're attempting to fund the purchase of up to 5 adaptive guitars.

I'd like to build a number of guitars to assure a diverse and successful research project. After the project we'd retain ownership and will sell them to select customers at a discounted price. For that, we need your support. Let Dr. Shaw explain why this could be so important for patient care.

The funds we raise will be used to build 5 more adaptive guitars that can be used as trial instruments in experimental programs for other universities or organizations dedicated to expanding the knowledge of patient care.  The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for as many people as we possibly can.

 Quick summary of our goals:

  • To build up to 5 instruments to be used in our research project
  • To build as many instruments as fast as we can for individuals that need their music back in their lives.

The sound of the instrument is definitely unique.  We asked Jim to play a tune for us to showcase the fact that playing your favorite tunes can easily be accomplished, even with an uncooperative limb.

This is an excerpt of Drops of Jupiter by Train.

Using the amplifier and your phone it turns therapy into a sing along where time flies for both patient and therapist.

You don't need to be a musician to play the Lolo or a music teacher to introduce it to patients.

We've been experimenting with a system that makes the music accessible to anybody who wants to start playing immediately.  This teaching method is going to be one of the subjects of our on going research and will only be made available for a case by case basis at this time.  Contact me directly to discuss how this could work for you or your institution.

Building a more refined system is going to take time and money.

We need to be able to travel between interested parties as well as make the instruments available to institutions in order to create large clinical trials.  The bigger the numbers, the better the science.

This is a high quality instrument made for heavy use and a long life.  That does, however, make it more expensive to produce.  Here is a breakdown of the costs involved for a Premium Series Lolo Guitar.

The prices in the reward section reflect the cost of construction as well as enough to help build the instruments we wish to provide for the clinical trials.  Feel free to contact me personally with questions about custom printing your handle for any special need you may have.

Rewards:

Thank you cards and medallions.

We'd like to give you a few special tokens of appreciation for your pledges. Hand written thank you postcards will be sent with all our reward backers.  We'll try to make them legible!  We have 3D printed commemorative medallions that come from our incredible digital design guru Michael Ireland.  Without his skills and patience the project would still be sitting on a shelf glowering at me.

We're still tweaking the design, filament and possibly printing different colors.

Hoodie

Our enthusiastic backers will receive a hoodie along with the other two items.

Still finalizing design. We'll keep you updated on the final product!

Lithophanes

For all of our Lolo Guitar Series pledges we're offering a unique item called a lithophane. A lithophane is a 3D printed rendering of your guitar that, when a light shines behind it, transforms into a black and white picture.  Place your candle or nightlight behind it for a wicked cool effect.

Lolo Guitars

The instrument featured in the pictures and videos is the first prototype.  The resonance box on the second round is going to be taller and I'll be able to remove the external fasteners and go with a more traditional method of acoustic construction.  This will include internal kerfing and custom soundboard bracing around the air ports.  I'll keep backers updated with pictures of the improved design along the way and address any questions you may have about the build.

Risks and challenges

We will be working with a number of skilled craftsmen and new building procedures that have yet to be tested for efficiency. Our greatest challenge will be scheduling every step of the build to ensure we can exceed expectations for delivery. Our 3D printer can not be monitored 24 hours a day and there are many different issues that can cause difficulties with completing a print. To address this we have contacted other companies that can share the workload in order to meet our deadlines.
