Today, I want to share my best answer to the question…
“When will ‘Legends of the Knight’ be released?”
From the very start, this film’s most important mission has been to inspire everyone on the planet to embody the spirit of Batman, engage with the world, and make a difference. This goal rises above all others. And it’s the reason “Legends of the Knight” is NOT about generating profits, but about encouraging as many people as we can to pursue their own heroic journey.
In every decision we are making about the film, the guiding question is: How can we do the most good? We want you, as a contributor, to know that your pledge to “Legends of the Knight” did MORE than finish a film. We want you to know in your heart that by joining with us, you made the world a better place. Together, WEareBATMAN!
“Legends of the Knight” is independently produced – it is not connected to any type of studio or distributor. When we originally released the Trailer, we did not anticipate that the storyline and message of this movie would have mass appeal. I continue to be overwhelmed that our Trailer has over 225,000 views on YouTube! I assumed we would find a niche audience who would support us as a grassroots, independent project.
But, distributors and educational groups are initiating discussions with us about bringing the film to larger audiences. We are having conversations with organizations that could give us a much larger platform for our heroic message than I could have imagined 18 months ago. This is unexpected, and we are working to determine where “Legends of the Knight” might fit into this landscape. We may not find the right fit for our mission in traditional distribution, but we feel it is important to investigate all of our options.
Most Hollywood films that you see in the theater are connected to distributors from the start. The studio and distributor set a release date long before the film is finished, and then they work together with their production and marketing departments toward that date. As an independent film, we have to finish the film and then show it to distributors. Once they see the finished film, more serious conversations may begin.
It could be an amazing blessing to work with a distribution partner who is excited about our larger vision for the film and can help us achieve it. This is potentially VERY exciting because it could allow us to inspire more people than we can reach alone.
But, here’s what we are learning: Our distribution of downloads, DVDs, & Blurays to our Kickstarter contributors may need to be part of a larger plan with a distributor. For maximum buzz, we would likely need to create a release plan with a focused impact. And releasing over 1,000 copies of the film too soon could severely damage our ability to build a relationship with a like-minded film distributor. By sharing copies without a release plan in place, we steal a distributor’s confidence that they can generate excitement for a big release.
I am thankful for your support and patience. YOU have made this film possible and I want you to be proud of what we achieve together. It is my faith that you share the bigger vision for what this film can be and how it can impact the world. We do not want to make any decisions that will limit our ability to reach the ultimate goal. You have already been patient, & I ask that you bear with us as our team pours every bit of passion, energy, and belief we have into uncovering the best path for the film.
In the weeks ahead, our focus will continue to be: How can “Legends of the Knight” do the most good? The answer to this question is not yet clear. But I will be excited to share it with you in the days ahead!
