Key Market was the sixth game in the Key series of stand-alone games published by R&D Games set in the medieval lands of Keydom, with components in both English and German.
Designer David Brain and developer Richard Breese have now re-visited Key Market, adding four new guilds to the game and updating a number of the original guilds to give an even more challenging gaming experience.
In August 2017, when Boardgamegeek’s 'Geek of the Week', Richard Breese invited gamers to thumb this Key Market image if they wanted to support a re-release of Key Market.
In Key Market each player controls an extended family of workers. Over the course of two years, players will organise their workers in an attempt to turn their initial scanty resources into a thriving economic system.
After an initial set up phase, the game is played over eight seasons. Each season has three distinct phases, during which players may take a variety of actions. The topography, weather, and seasons will influence the ability of workers to produce crops and livestock in the fields and luxuries in the villages. In addition, resources and luxuries may be bought and sold in the market, or gold and favours sought and acquired. Other workers may be sponsored to join the powerful guilds, where they will acquire skills as they gain promotion to become craftsmen or even the guild master.
Turn order throughout the game is determined by the player’s position on the season track, which changes at the end of each season. At the end of the game, the player who has acquired the most gold will win the game. If you are looking for a challenging medieval resource management/economic engine game, here you are!

Risks and challenges
R&D Games have been publishing board games since 1989. Since 2004 R&D's games have been manufactured by leading European board game manufacturers to their high production standards. Key Market will be ready to print shortly after the Kickstarter campaign is complete and will be shipped as soon as the production is complete. To allow for manufacturers production margins it will be necessary to produce extra copies in order to be able to guarantee delivery to all backers. Depending on the response to the Kickstarter, additional copies may be produced for sale at Spiel 2019 and for limited distribution thereafter. Sorry, logistical and practical considerations mean that it is not feasible to offer an option to pre-order and collect copies at Spiel. It is not intended that Key Market will continuously remain in print after this Kickstarter production.
While shipping and processing delays are always a possibility, we have set a reasonable delivery date of October based on our experience and the inclusion of some contingency. Hopefully delivery will be a little earlier. Key Market will be manufactured in Europe. It is planned to ship all copies for distribution in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand to the US and to distribute these copies from the US. This is cheaper than sending to these destinations direct from Europe. The shipping costs quoted to include a contribution toward the bulk shipping cost.
R&D Games's games are distributed by a different company in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand than to the rest of the world. If practical there will be a Pledge Manager offer to these countries once the campaign is concluded. But due to the different distribution rights, the Pledge Manager offer cannot be extended to the rest of the world.
The first edition of Key Market was produced in 2010. The manufacturers used a new company for the production of the wooden pieces for the first and only time! Sadly these wooden pieces, whilst they have character, were not of the quality that was expected. We are hoping to be able to acquire surplus wooden piece sets when producing this second edition. If this is possible and as a goodwill gesture, any gamer who purchased the first edition of Key Market direct from R&D Games can claim a replacement set of wooden pieces at no cost by e-mailing R&D Games at firstname.lastname@example.org and quoting their 2010 name, e-mail address and order number. R&D Games will also supply any other gamer who subsequently purchased a copy of the first edition with a free set of replacement pieces on payment of a £3.50 charge to cover postage and packing. For practical reasons this offer will expire in October 2019 and is contingent on the manufacturers co-operation, which we are optimistic will be possible to achieve.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to offer the new guilds for sale on their own to owners of the first edition. All the card pieces are printed at the same time and this would have required separate cutting forms or considerable waste, either of which would have added to significantly to the card production costs. In addition there would have been additional rules printing, packaging and distribution which would have been uneconomical for the small quantities involved.
We are confident that you will enjoy Key Market. If you don't enjoy the game after you've received and played it then you can return the game within six months to R&D Games and we will issue you with a refund. Please note, when we receive your funds, we only receive around 90% of what you paid due to various fees and charges, so you will receive the refund after the deduction of 10% to cover those charges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
