Breastfeeding All Around The Bay: A Hardcover Board Book
Women should feel comfortable and supported to breastfeed their baby out in public. Newborns eat often. The average breastfeeding newborn wants to nurse a minimum of every 2-3 hours. This will most likely result in at least one feeding happening out in public. Written and illustrated by International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Jasmine Marquez, Breastfeeding All Around The Bay helps normalize breastfeeding outside of the home at familiar beloved locations in the San Francisco Bay Area.
This fun lighthearted board book is one you'll want to read again and again with your own little nursling (or to give to an expecting or new mama to show your support).
We need children’s books (and TV shows and movies) to start showing babies breastfeeding. It’s difficult to normalize something when it’s not seen anywhere. Four out of 5 babies in the United States start off breastfeeding, 58% of babies are still breastfeeding at 6 months, and 36% of babies are still breastfeeding at 12 months (CDC, 2019). That’s a lot of breastfed babies.
As a lactation consultant, I often hear that moms haven’t seen or been around breastfeeding women until they themselves got pregnant and started seeking out videos in preparation. How wonderful would it be for children to be exposed to this normal biological process not only directly from breastfeeding, but also indirectly in our books, TV shows, and movies? Breastfeeding All Around The Bay is a book to be shared with the youngest of readers so they grow up seeing breastfeeding as a normal way to feed a baby.
Breastfeeding All Around The Bay highlights a Black woman breastfeeding. Rates for initiation and duration of breastfeeding for Black women in the United States are the lowest comparatively to other races, but there are nationwide movements happening to help decrease this health disparity. Supporting this book is just one of many things that can be done to help. #BlackBreastfeedingWeek #BlackWomenDoBreastfeed
Breastfeeding All Around The Bay also has an interracial couple, something that is also rarely seen and reflects my own family. I wanted my daughter to grow up reading stories that have families that look like ours.
I am an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). I use best practices to help families overcome any challenges they may be experiencing to reach their breastfeeding goals. I become the “breast friend” whenever a girl friend of mine delivers a baby and I absolutely love what I do.
My passion is preventative health, specifically in the field of maternal, infant, and child health. I have also always had a passion for early literacy and am so grateful that the time has come for this dream of literary authorship to become a reality.
I was born in Queens, NY but have been a California Bay Area girl since I was 4 months old. Union City, CA is my hometown and I still call the East Bay home with my husband and 18-month-old daughter, Margot.
I am a HUGE San Francisco 49ers fan but please don’t hold that against me if you are a Seahawks fan or Raider fan thinking about supporting my campaign.
Publishing a book is a process, especially a children’s board book, as the thick pages need special handling and drying. I am running this Kickstarter in order to produce a high quality sturdy board book that can endure infant slobber and the enthusiasm in which toddlers turn pages.
By pre-ordering a copy of Breastfeeding All Around The Bay now, your contribution will be used to fund the first print run of 1,000 hardcover board books, and pay for shipping to me from the printer. Some additional funds have been allocated to cover costs of professional print ready and E-Book file preparation, and Kickstarter fees.
