Seven $ Suit & Other Stories - The Latest From Breadfoot
Seven $ Suit & Other Stories is a brand new batch of studio recordings packaged in a hand drawn coloring and activity book.
Ya know, it's been 4 years since we all rode together in my F100 and talked about making Salvatella a real thing. And who knew when we turned that engine over that it would turn into something that would be an amazing beyond most amazings I’ve known? What made it truly amazing was you all. I couldn't have done it with out ya and I thank ya again and again and again.
In the time since, I took Salvatella on the road, kicking it wherever folks would have me. I even took it back to England and to Norway for a series of shows including a live radio performance on Resonance FM's Tin Can Review.
Now in my travels folks was saying all kinds of nice things like - "No one else is doing what you’re doing" and "Keep doing what you’re doing" and "Keep telling the stories". After one particular show in Charleston I was told by a new fan that they found Breadfoot to be a cross between Roger Miller and Shel Silverstein. Cool, right? I thought so. And then on another occasion - and I want ya to pay particular attention to this one - I was asked after a live podcast performance and interview in Greensboro if I had ever been featured as character in a comic book.
Whoa. You can almost hear the gears as they started to turn, can’t ya?
And turn they did. And the inevitable result -
Seven $ Suit & Other Stories!
Yup. You guessed it. What I'm intending to do to complement this brand new batch of studio recordings is create all original hand-drawn comics for each and every song on the album plus several activity pages like a word search and a maze! Think of it as illustrated liner notes that ya can color and set with while listening to the new Breadfoot album!
Now some of you folks might be thinking, Hey! Wait a minute, Breadfoot - we only had you pegged for a multi-instrumentalist, raconteur par excellence and a purveyor of idiosyncratic songs of love and loss. Well, au contraire mon frere! I been drawing since forever and up until Salvatella had in fact always gotten a kick out of creating my own album covers. The Mooncalve's Friends of the Young and Cynical Ectomorphic Mr. Douglas and Breadfoot's The Funhouse Recordings are just two of the examples.
Not bad, right? So hey, how about a sneak peek at one of the panels I've already completed?
Check it out you all.
Seven $ Suit!
Whadya think? Can't hardly wait to start coloring, can ya?
Now what about the Music?
Oh, don't worry - the music for this album will not be taking a back seat to all the way cool illustrations I'm working up for y'all to color. I'm really excited about the new batch of songs I have sketched out. Songs like Seven $ Suit, featured in the live video above from Trondhiem, Norway. Or this one which was shot at my good buddy Rhys Marsh's Autumnsongs Studios, also while I was there in Trondheim.
Now while hanging out at Autumnsongs and digging the amazing studio space and live room, talking music and just catching up with my old bud Rhys we came to discover that we were both thinking the same thing. And that same thing we was both thinking was wouldn't it be something if the next Breadfoot album was to be recorded right there at Autumnsongs Studios?
So this something is what we're working towards. And we have in fact already begun the pre-production, via FaceTime, reviewing each song in detail, discussing the instrumentation and creating a road map. The Big Plan is to take two weeks to record, mix, and master and then follow that up with live performances in and around Norway, hopefully featuring several of the musicians that will be appearing on the album. If all goes well, these performances will not only help offset some of the costs of travel but provide us with some most excellent video and live recordings to share as a special thank you!
Bringing it on home
So yeah... I chose to come back to Kickstarter cause in its own way cool way it provides us this amazing platform to realize what would be tough to make happen otherwise. The plain truth is that without YOUR participation and generous support, Seven $ Suit & Other Stories will probably not see the light of day.
The $12,000 I figure we'll need kinda breaks out kinda like this:
Studio Time $3600
Production and Travel Costs $1350
Studio Musicians $1250
Video Production and Promotion $1000
Coloring and Activity Book Printing $950
CD Replication $750
In reality the costs associated don't end here as we must also factor in the cost of incentives, shipping and well yes, taxes.
But can’t ya almost taste it? Eight songs, fully-illustrated comic book-style by yours truly with activity pages to boot. A shiny new CD with a fresh batch of studio recordings tucked in a pocket in the back. Just imagine how much fun it'll be to be laying on your belly or setting at your kitchen table with a barley pop or a cuppa joe, coloring away and digging the new Breadfoot record.
Okay! So turn them piggy banks upside down and give em a good shake, check out them incentives and get ya one ya like. Please share the video with yer friends and family and know that from the bottom of my heart, I really, really appreciate ya helping me to bring this one on home.
Oh an hey, stay tuned for all kinds of cool updates and videos and pics from the studio and, uhm, yeah so, ya ready?
Dig it. Let's do this!
Risks and challenges
In all my professional experiences in and out of the studio what it all comes down to in my opinion, is preparation. Ya make lists for your lists and surround yourself with talented and able people who share your passion and your vision. Do that and ya really can't loose.
Now don't get me wrong, sh*t can happen and getting all the musicians ya need for a particular session in the same room at the same time can take some finagling but short of a major system failure that dumps all the data well I'm feeling pretty confident that we're gonna be able to get it done.
And regarding the illustrations for the coloring and activity book well I've already begun sketching those
out and in fact have completed several already.
Believe me when I tell ya that you all will be along with me every step of the way. i will be hitting with regular updates on the recording, illustration, replication and fulfillment process and tell you what if it looks like there's gonna be a hitch in our giddy up you all will be the first to know.
I promise you that.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
