No Mars Soil has ever been returned to Earth.
In order to develop the most recent NASA missions to Mars, NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory needed a material that could simulate the soil on Mars. Using data from Mars landers and Earth-based observations, NASA and the JPL identified several sites on Earth that have similar composition to the soil and rocks found on Mars.
We're working exclusively with suppliers that operate the same sites where NASA and the JPL have obtained their Mars Regolith (Soil) Simulant. This ensures that you're receiving a research-grade sample that is as close as Earth can come to Mars.
There are many uses for Mars Regolith Simulant beyond plant growth. For example, can you create a structural material by adding superglue? Can you create a color of paint that's only found on Mars? The options are limitless - that's where citizen science, and backers like you come in!

Our team has extensive experience developing, assembling, and shipping complex technical projects. We know the importance of planning a campaign to every detail. We're extremely confident that we can deliver The Martian Garden on time and without issues by proactively managing risk before the campaign even begins.
The critical component in The Martian Garden is the Mars Regolith Simulant. We have identified the exact sources used by NASA and the JPL in the development of their own Mars Regolith Simulant. After identifying the sites, we identified the suppliers that are currently operating the sites. As of now, we have three suppliers to choose from, and we can source any quantity of Mars Regolith Simulant necessary to complete the project.
Other than Mars regolith simulant, all the components involved in The Martian Garden are readily available and we have quotes from suppliers.
When it comes to shipping and logistics, we have a great relationship with our suppliers and are already equipped to print shipping labels in large batches. We've also already shipped complete Martian Garden Kits to beta testers, so we know the precise cost of shipping all of our rewards.
