I am sorry to hear that TG - we did everything we could to slim the margins as much as possible and keep it as affordable as possible.

Ed - I know we wont be at GenCon - we MAY be going to Origins but are unsure at this point. Where are you based out of?

@Alan we are looking for an alternative shipping option for Canada - but from USA to Canada is more than UK to Canada and so looking at one more option - so keep an eye on the shipping aspect - but remember we expect this to weigh just over 6lbs (estimated)

Thanks Yip. We are very excited by this project. Have a great mfg and trying to keep things our typical beautiful and affordable. So minis are the priority for the vibe and feel and my sculptor is amazing and if we trigger the wandering monster stretch all the monsters will come from Origins :)

      Sign me up Dave
      it looks good.
I agree that having a minis/non-minis option would be financially difficult.
      I'm happy either way though.

@MAJ I appreciate the feedback. If we were to ever do it - the most likely way will be as a totally separate project. The primary focus at this point really is to bring people a light small unit skirmish game that is fun, quick and can be taught to just about anyone as a gateway game..

    14. MAJBrown22
      Superbacker

Take caution if you are thinking of creating a non-minis option, every project I've seen do it has suffered as a result. A vocal minority always asks for it, but less than 10% of backers will actually go for it and you'll end up losing money on an SKU that no one wants.

    15. Dave Killingsworth 7-time creator

@drew thanks fo the feedback we are talking this in various options as for me its about allowing as many people to have fun with my games as possible. We did minis because well I found a sculptor that was awesome and I could afford to do a cool set and the mechanics make the game highly accessible to almost any level gamer.

So the options so far are:
1 - set a stretch goal for say 175-200K to assure full production of the game maxed out are covered and then add as level that goes mini-less and add standees to ALL games - that way mini people can have standees for while they are painting or whatever and a level for people who just dont like minis or cant afford them

2 - offer it at pledge manager if we can work it out by then - and let people come later

3 - do a kickstarter after this one and offer the standee version as a stand alone

Open to other ideas but the FOCUS here will be the minis based game and making sure that it is of comparable quality to everything else we do and the primary goal is nailed.

      Hope that makes sense

The campaign page is looking great, Dave!

Since I love minis, I don't agree that there should be a mini-less version because that would complicate your production a lot. I understand that folks might prefer a mini-less version to reduce costs, but at $69 it's one of the less-expensive mini games out there.

If you wanted to do something to address it, perhaps, instead, include punchboard standees in every box (along with the minis) so folks could use either. Then, of course, you'd have to add standee holders.

Or offer just the standees & standee holders as an add-on, so those that prefer them could add them to their base set (which includes the minis). I understand that would add to cost of production and doesn't address folk's desire to reduce their cost, but at least it would give them an option of which to use.

maybe maybe there could be a possibility of setting a stretch goal a bit far out that would let people come into the campaign for a miniless version but we will have to see

Dave, I think the campaign page itself looks very professional. I've read the other comments (but not all of the text on the campaign page nor watched the video, as I trust that spellcheck and video feedback is taken care of by others).

      - Arena board - I agree that adding one of the other backgrounds would be nice instead of this dark brown arena in the main image of "What you get". You write that this is WIP so I am sure you'll get it done before launch (you don't need all of them, but e.g. Forest if you think that will look nicest).

      - Version without Minis - I agree with the others that a less expensive version would be interesting. I completely understand your situation, so what I would propose is having this as a stretch goal - figure out how much you need in order to be able to afford a split production. I assume that basically you could do this once you've funded - the only difference would be adding tokens instead of minis to those "budget versions". I'd suggest not going for standees unless this is basically the same price as tokens. It needs to be significantly less expensive to draw backers that are interested in the mechanic, but don't want to paint minis. I think tokens or standees with nice colour images of the creatures will be better than playing with grey minis. But, again, you need to make this a stretch goal so you don't risk people switching pledge levels and end up with too few backers on the main level with the minis.

      Good luck!!

Null i understand. This thing is massive and i tend to go in layers. The borard was originally just gonna be a board underground fight pit then evolved this is still base tiles from 8 months ago. Will get spiffing as we go. But others are still wip as are last 8 mi is the last 2 stretch molds

I hoped that was the case. I know what your art can look like (Lords of Rock is amazingly, epically, beautiful). I just don't think the Arena is the best foot to put forward to make this campaign as successful as possible.

      on June 23

Just so you know there are 3 other sets of art for map tiles. So u get 4 sets of 9 effectively. This is the very base arena and the terrain modifier cards and tokens are meant to be used to modify the very base arena tiles

The forest set also has 3d cardboard trees and other things as well as built in terrain obstacles and challenges that have color. This is still not toally finished as we fiddle with color as we finish elements like team scheme and the terrain mods and 3 alt terrain sets

I see that there are other environments, so maybe it's okay that one is dark and dirty, but when I look at a new project, the first thing I do is skim down the page to see what the game looks like, what comes in the box, what the various tiers are, and seeing something like that dampens my enthusiasm.

    27. Nullpunkt

Dave, you know I like you and love Lords of Rock, so I want to be honest. The Arena is unbelievably bland, and kind of a turn off. It's just flat and brown, with nothing to draw you in. I get that you want the pieces to be the focus, but you should really consider making it a little less brown. Give it something interesting to draw the eye. Board can be subtle without being ugly.

I completely understand. I already have a few game about individual unit combat so backing will come down to cost and available funds at the time :-)

    30. Dave Killingsworth 7-time creator
      Superbacker
      on June 21

Non-mini version would be less but as a small designer and publish I have to choose one or the other. The mfg costs for molds on the minis is not cheap and a split kickstarter option could lead to neither being funded in a way that would allow neither to be created. By the time people started asking this there was too much time and cost invested on this path to split, diverge or change at this time. I wont close the door completely but have to see if there is any viable way to make both.

    31. Jason Webster
      Superbacker
      on June 21

I too would be interested in a standee version of the game.
I am not in the game industry so I do not know what the price point difference would be. I appreciate that a smaller company's manufacturing cost for their game is completely different than a large company ordering many more copies.
What do you the the Price point for the mini version of the game would be? What would the price point be for a non mini version ?

    32. Dave Killingsworth 7-time creator
      Superbacker
      on June 1

@lilRuub I understand that. We have had one other person ask about a standee version. If I was a larger company with the ability to create a split production run I would consider it. A lot can change over the next few months and maybe there will be some way we come up with some options or variations. But I really appreciate the feedback...what would you think the price point you would like for something that was standees without minis?

    33. LilRuub on June 1

I would consider backing this project if there was a less expensive standee or token version. I am so done with miniatures. I have so many unpainted minis from games I have. I don't know if I'll ever catch up.

We will start building this page out this coming week. In the game you play one of the factions from Origins. The wizards have gone from all powerful to persecuted in just ten years so they have a combat in secret to determine who is the strongest and that person will get a share of everyone elses power to try to right the balance.

In the game you have a deck of 50 cards for each wizard - mix of mosnters and spells. You have a modular map (18 tiles dual sided) so you can configure the map how you want from 3x3 tiles down. You have 5 minis per team. You use powerup mechanic to allow you to summon monsters to the field. You play the card on your tableau and then place a mini on the board.

move the minis around trying to kill each others minions. Supporting them with spells and some monsters special abilities. Monsters level is also their summon cost and VP value. First to kill 8 VP of enemy (or more if you want) becomes archmage.

      Does that help?

Archmage Origins will launch May 9th. Dawn of the Archmage will launch August 1.
Origins is a prequel game in story and game play. It introduces you to the teams and a few of the monsters. It happens 10 years in the timeline before the coming of Dawn. I feeds the storyline for Dawn. The logos, teams and magical shcools carry over. Additionally Origins has four cards that can be used in playing Dawn - but are in no way necessary...will just be a nice little side board addition.

About this project

Summon Your Power!

Dawn of the Archmage is small unit (miniatures) skirmish game for 2 to 4 players, ages 8+. Each mage will represent a school of magic, summoning powerful monsters to the battlefield. Pitting their fearsome creatures in pitched battle, one mage will reign victorious, ascending to the title of Archmage.

Do you have the strength and strategy to defeat your enemies?  Will you become the Archmage?

Dawn of the Archmage continues the rich fantasy world of Archmage Origins. Once the rulers of Sorcado,  mages have fallen from power. Challengers arrive from every corner of the land. Knighted Paladins, land-hungry Lords... all seek to dethrone the mages. But mages don't go down easily. It's time to fight back!

Each mage uses summoning powers to bring new and dangerous creatures to the battlefield. Expending massive mystical energy, their battle grows in frenetic power as monstrous beasts fight for the mages who control them, seeking to destroy all challengers in a magic-fueled frenzy.

Ultimate power hangs in the balance as ferocious monsters shake the earth with battle-lust.

In addition to summoning fearsome creatures to fight, mages posses a selection of powerful spells. With a single word, the battle can shift. Manipulating odds, controlling movement, and countering rival spells, the mage's strategy will determine the supreme ruler of Sorcado.

The battle rages everywhere. Modular map tiles allow the mages to customize the battle area. Large, sprawling battlefields or close, confined ones... the fight is different every time. Will it be the Arena? The Forest? The Ruins? Or even Underground?

SolarFlare Games contributes just over $6.00 USD towards the shipping costs for ALL backers. The additional charge for various countries reflects the cost after this subsidy.

We bulk ship our international orders to the UK for fulfillment from the UK. This is done to reduce the shipping costs around the world and prevent VAT costs for EU backers. This makes the international shipping as backer friendly as possible.

The following is a list of rough estimates for shipping a standard game package (just under 4kg  weight).

  • USA and UK: $6
  • CANADA: $16
  • LATIN AMERICA: $50-55 to most countries.
  • ASIA: $39 to China and Hong Kong. $43 to most other countries (we can't predict an estimate cost to Malaysia).
  • OCEANIA: $38-43
  • EUROPE: $6-$20 to most countries (UK $6)

Unfortunately, different import laws and customs from some specific countries have made it impossible for SolarFlare Games to ship games to them. *WE DO NOT SHIP TO:* Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan.

We like to support game stores around the world by offering the special pricing of the game to retailers during the campaign. We treat retailer backers just like other backers in that they receive their rewards before we release regular retail games into distribution.

If you're a retailer, please contact Dave at dave@solarflaregames.com during the campaign for pricing information. Or back the $2 Retailer reward level and we will contact YOU! Retailers will need to provide some documentation to validate retailer status.

Risks and challenges

SolarFlare Games has worked in gaming and publishing in various capacities for many years and has the experience to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible.

We believe in quality above all else and have chosen to use a well-established production organization with a deep experience in game production. They are an organization that have a proven record working with independent game developers.

This is our 7th Kickstarter. Our last six projects were successfully funded and delivered on time. When funding ends, production will quickly begin and we will provide timely updates through each stage of Dawn of the Archmage production, all the way until it hits your table.

We believe that honesty is paramount for our supporters. Our exacting standards and desire for quality and fun mean that you're guaranteed a game that looks just as good as it is fun to play, while offering many years of family fun!

The estimated delivery date is June 2018, but keep in mind this is only an estimate. Also, due to the logistics of international shipping, backers in different regions of the world may receive their rewards sooner than others.

There are some vagaries in terms of timing when it comes to anything produced in China, such as:
Production delays
Shipping delays
Customs delays

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

By pledging to this project, you acknowledge that the final look, materials and content of the rewards (and the project) are subject to change and may differ from what is presented while the Kickstarter project was active.

If you do not log in and confirm your pledge within 8 weeks of our notification via email to confirm your pledge, you agree that we have fulfilled our obligations to you in full for payment or donations received.

However, we may, at our discretion, refund or ship your pledge if you contact us and confirm your pledge after the 8 week window has elapsed. Unconfirmed pledges make it difficult for us to plan production and logistics, and could lead to project delays. For this project we do not intend to allow this to happen, which may mean if you confirm your pledge too late, special order items may not be produced in sufficient quantity for your pledge.

If you confirm your pledge within 8 weeks of our notification via email, you agree that our responsibility to you is to ship your order as entered into our pledge manager system, that title and risk passes to you upon delivery to a common carrier for such shipment, and you are responsible for import duties or any other duties that may be payable to the relevant tax authorities, providing correct address information and ensuring this address is deliverable by normal methods.

If you do not accept these terms, please do not pledge on this project.
