In Take a Penny you will need to read your opponents and patiently wait to make your move. Will you end up with the most pennies or will you be able to give them all away?
Brass Dog Games was started by Scott and Abby Mims in 2015 and recently we have added the help of our friends Aaron Kvarnlov-Leverty and Chandra Martin.
Take a Penny is our first foray into game publishing. We are very excited to start sharing our games with the Kickstarter community and have big plans for the future.
But what's with the Brass Dog?
The name comes from an artistic challenge that was given to Scott at the musical instrument repair shop where he works. Someone asked him to make a dog made out of spare parts. Well, with a pile of unfixable instruments at his disposal and a mind that needed to unwind on a Friday afternoon he set to work. By combining a little trombone with some saxophone and a sprinkle of french horn our namesake was born.
Take a Penny is designed to be carried with you anywhere. It easily fits in your pocket and you can even leave the Penny Tokens behind. All you need to play are 15 of something relatively small. Bring it out at a restaurant and play with 15 Sugar Packets or maybe even creamers. You could even use random spare change.
For those of you that want more, we are offering a Deluxe Edition of the game.
This will include:
- 8 Playing tiles, 3.5 x 3.5 inches:
- 4 Player Screens: 3.5 x 10 inches
- 8 Colored Action Selection Tokens
- 15 Penny Tokens .75 inch round
- A Box to fit it all in, 3.6 x 5.6 x 1.45 inches
We currently have a prototype copy being produced. It should arrive soon and as soon as it does we will provide pictures.
Need a gift for that hard to shop for gamer? Want to impress your friends at game night?
We will customize 10 copies of the Standard Edition or 1 Copy of the Deluxe Edition with the image of your choice. Anytime a penny is shown on the cards or tokens for the Standard Edition, or on the tiles, screens, tokens and box of the Deluxe Edition, we will substitute a new design with your image in place of our Brass Dog.
You will need to provide the image you wish to use, subject to approval, at the end of the campaign. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions about this process.
To learn how to play you can look at the rules in the next section.
Or, you can watch the Brass Dog crew play a game in this video.
Can't wait to give the game a try? Well we can't wait for you to try it out. Click the Links below to Download the Cards and Rules. Just print and cut out the cards and grab 15 pennies, or whatever you have, and start playing.
Rules (This is a big one so please be patient)
We want to keep the cost of this game as low as possible as well as make sure that we can deliver on time so the number of stretch goals for this project will be limited. Our goal is to deliver the highest quality game we can without letting too many Stretch Goals get in the way of production. We have seen many first timers get carried away with Stretch Goals and run into problems. We would rather ensure we deliver than fall victim to that ourselves.
If you would like to add additional Standard Edition copies of Take a Penny, all you need to do is click on manage pledge and add $5 (plus shipping based on your location) for each. If you would like to add additional Deluxe Edition copies, add $23 (plus shipping) for each.
See table below for more information about international shipping rates.
We will send out a survey after the campaign has ended to ask you how many copies of each you have pledged for.
Because this is Brass Dog Games first game we do not have the infrastructure for discounted international shipping. We are hoping that in the future will will be able to offer better pricing on shipping but for now we must go with standard rates from the United States Postal Service. Our research has shown that they will provide the best possible rates for this campaign. We were unable to obtain a range of global shipping prices, so please contact us if your country is not included in our list and we will calculate shipping for you.
We want to thank everyone for taking the time to look at our project. We are so excited to be bringing Take a Penny to you and with your help we can proudly send this fun little game out into the world.
Risks and challenges
We have already had a small prototype printing done and we are very pleased with both the results and the time it took to have them printed. We are going though Game Crafter in Madison WI. Since we are based in St. Paul MN we will easily be able to pick up the games and ship them in a relatively short amount of time. We know they can do a great job of printing our game promptly so we are confident that we can get our games out to backers on time. We have already mailed a few test copies and have had no problems with delivery so far.
After backing many games on kickstarter we know that communication is key. We promise to be as open and transparent about all aspects of production and fulfillment as possible.
All files are ready to go to the printer and we have seen what they can do already. The files are also backed up in multiple locations with multiple people who will be able to take over fulfillment if the worst should happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
