Help high school students finish their feature film adaptation of Shakespeare's Scottish play.
Last year, the advanced film production class at East Hollywood High School decided to take on an insanely ambitious project: make a feature film adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. We thought this would be a unique interdisciplinary educational experience that would combine the efforts of the film department with acting, language arts, music, photography, and costume design. We decided to trim it down to 60 minutes, keep the original language, but set it in a post-apocalyptic future—kind of Shakespeare meets the Road Warrior.
The class was a huge success, with each student really stepping up and taking responsibility for their role. We had students in charge of camerawork, lighting, costumes, locations, makeup and special effects, as well as all the acting. We had a great time and they learned what it takes to put together a major film production.
But now that the whole film is shot we’re asking for help to get it finished. We want this to look and sound great—to really reflect the work these students put into it and the potential that a high school film production program can have.
With your help we can pay for the rest of the editing, for professional sound design and mixing, color correction, music composition, and soundtrack royalties. $3,000 will be enough to get it finished, but feel free to go beyond that. Every dollar will go towards making this film the best it can be.
Once it’s finished we plan to show the film around the country in festivals and any other venues that cater towards Shakespeare or children’s film production. We would love to do a major production like this every year, either based on a Shakespeare play or other literary work. We’re asking you to join with us to make Macbeth a success so we can continue this unique educational opportunity.
