Stretch Goal

The project is funded! Welcome to Macintosh will be back for a third season beginning next summer. With such overwhelming support, I'm announcing a stretch goal: if the project reaches $16,000, there'll be another 2 episodes added to season three. And I'll add another episode at $18,000. To break it down:

  • $10,000: 8 Episode Season ☑️
  • $16,000: 10 Episode Season ☑️
  • $18,000: 11 Episode Season

Additionally, I'll be able to add more polish to the entire season, with more original scoring and extra help with editing and mixing. And no matter what, every dollar that's pledged is put directly towards making the show the best it can be. Help me make even more episodes of Welcome to Macintosh. Thank you.

————————————————————————

There are countless talk shows where hosts casually chat about the week’s tech news and their opinions about Apple; Welcome to Macintosh is not one of them. Each episode is a tight, meticulously edited story that takes an unexpected angle into understanding the world's most valuable corporation and the impact it has on all of our lives. They’re the kind of stories you might hear on This American Life or 99% Invisible, but about Apple and the community around it. It's a show about the individuals behind the technology, the people who think different.

There’s many more stories in the pipeline after the success of seasons 1 and 2 – stories I can't wait to share with you. In one episode, I pitch an emoji for adoption in the international Unicode standard, following it all the way from a concept through the bureaucracy of the emoji-industrial complex. In another, I trace the surprisingly dramatic past of an app that was on the forefront of the MP3 revolution. And there are a whole bunch of others. Beginning next summer: eight brand new episodes for Season 3.

But to do it, I need your help.

Season 3 of Welcome to Macintosh is the most ambitious season to date. The stories I'm working on require traveling across the country, reporting on events, working with designers — and these expenses add up. Advertising helps, but the money only comes in after the episodes have been released. In the past, I've paid for expenses out of pocket and just trusted that things would work out. But that's not sustainable, and it limits what I'm able to do and what stories I can tell. The $10,000 would be going towards:

  • Travel to interview interesting guests for new stories
  • Web services to host and distribute episodes
  • Editing assistance
  • Music licensing for scoring stories
  • Improved recording gear for interviewing in the field & better studio sound

Simply put: I can’t make Season 3 without you. Help me make the best season of Welcome to Macintosh yet.

About the Show:

Welcome to Macintosh has received praise from Apple journalists and narrative-radio enthusiasts alike; it's the only podcast that bridges the divide between the two. Here are some of the things people have said about the show:

“Concise, tightly-edited, informative, and fun new podcast... So good.”

— John Gruber, Daring Fireball

“Welcome to Macintosh is short, sweet, and created with great care. I highly recommend it.”

 — Jason Snell, Six Colors

"Welcome to Macintosh [is] a tiny show about America’s biggest corporation, but it wants you to love it in ways that are anything but small.”

 — Devon Taylor, The Timbre

“The host has a pleasant voice!”

— vcPINK, iTunes Reviewer

Previous episodes have ranged in subject matter from the psychology of software aesthetics to building one of the first digital synthesizers to the history of Macworld magazine. Here's my personal favorite, about Jonathan Mann, the guy who wrote the song Apple used to open the 2010 Antennagate press conference:

About Me:

I’m a lifelong Apple enthusiast, and an independent radio producer based in Houston, TX. I’ve worked as an intern with NPR's Planet Money, and I’m an alum of the Transom Story Workshop. My work has appeared on radio stations across the country. I was the recipient of the UnFictional Award for a story about sheep in opera in the 2016 KCRW 24-Hour Radio Race. Rewards:

Kickstarter Exclusive Content

All backers who pledge $15 or more to the Kickstarter will receive access to exclusive bonus-content from season three. See behind-the-scenes in my recording “studio” (my closet), hear extended clips from interviews, even get deleted scenes that didn’t fit in the final episodes.

Vinyl Stickers

Two kinds of stickers: a 2.5" x 2.5" print of the  album artwork, and a 2.3" x 3" pixel Mac. The stickers are printed on water-resistant material, so they'll be long lasting and beautiful. Perfect to put on your laptop, bike, car, or water bottle to show your support of the podcast. Get one of each for $25, or three of each for $40. That's just $5 per episode of Welcome to Macintosh.

T-Shirt

Get the Welcome to Macintosh icon printed on an incredibly soft, incredibly comfortable American Apparel Tri-Blend shirt. The shirt is available in unisex or women’s cut. Show off your support for the podcast in style (and comfort). Early-bird supporters can get a shirt for just $65, and everyone else can get one for $80. That's just $10 per episode of Welcome to Macintosh!

Your Name in Waveforms

Have your name read in the credits of each episode of Season 3 of Welcome to Macintosh. You'll have my profound gratitude, and eight recordings to prove it.

Behind the Scenes Tour

Come see how the show gets made! See the glamorous recording studio (my closet), watch me cut and edit interviews, write scripts, contact guests. And of course, we'll get some delicious tacos for lunch. Must be able to travel to Houston. Travel expenses not included.

Podcast Consultation

Have a podcast you're trying to start? Wondering how you could take a current project to the next level? I'll spend a few hours with you on Skype discussing options, strategies, and how to make your podcast the best it can be.

Risiken und Herausforderungen

Making a podcast is a lot of work, and it takes a lot of time. It's possible that some stories will take longer than anticipated or could fall through — however, I'm pursuing more than eight stories. If one falls through, I have other stories that could take their place.
