Sketchboard Pro: iPad Stand for Artists
Drawing digitally has never felt more comfortable or like drawing on paper.
This project will only be funded if it reaches its goal by Fri, November 1 2019 1:56 PM UTC +00:00.
Introducing Sketchboard Pro, an iPad stand designed for artists by artists!
Modeled after the classic illustration sketch boards we all know from art school, this stand cradles your iPad to create a totally flat drawing surface around the screen and allow for more comfort and support while drawing.
Reduce Physical Stress and Work Anywhere
The Sketchboard Pro can be used flat on a drawing table or propped against a desk, and it has legs that fold out to create a comfortable 20-degree incline on any flat surface in landscape or portrait orientation.
Or take it to the couch...or to your favorite painting spot!
Wherever you love to make art and feel most comfortable.
Just Like Drawing on Paper
With the Sketchboard Pro, your iPad is nestled into a form-fitted cradle that creates a smooth surface for your hand to glide across. For the first time, this enables you to utilize the complete canvas when drawing on your iPad, rather than resting your hand on areas of the screen where you could be drawing.
Bring Your Drawings to Life!
Combine what you love about drawing on iPad with the traditional physical experience of making art. You are able to use your full arm while drawing to achieve a more elegant, flowing look to your lines and bring your drawings to life.
Sketchboard Pro offers wonderful support for arms so you can rest 'em when you need to and store that energy for when you need crazy arm motion in your lines.
We have found that many artists who draw on their iPads for extended periods of time hold a lot of tension in their bodies from the positions they have to maintain while drawing. Thanks to the Sketchboard Pro, your whole body can relax and that positive feeling translates to your art.
It's Got a Magnetic Personality
Magnetic plates embedded in the Sketchboard Pro help to lock your iPad Pro in place to prevent it from accidentally falling out when you need to move from one spot to the next.
Charge While You Draw
Though our first prototypes do not show it, we're adding a port for your charging cable that you can charge while using the Sketchboard Pro!
Stand in Landscape or Portrait Orientation
We're also adding a third fold-out leg so that you can rotate the Sketchboard Pro to a 90-degree angle and stand it on a table for drawing with your iPad in portrait orientation.

Reviews from Our Test Artists
We felt it was important to invite professional artists who use their iPads as a cornerstone of their process to test out the Sketchboard Pro and help us refine its features. These artists are drawing on their iPads with the Apple Pencil for several hours a day. We gave each of them a prototype to test drive for several weeks and were so happy to learn that they now can't live without Sketchboard Pro. Incidentally, we're now missing a couple of prototypes.
Sketchboard Pro in the Press
"The iPad Pro can be superb for artists, but the tablet’s weight combined with poor ergonomics over the long term can lead to pain and discomfort.... [Sketchboard Pro] draws inspiration from classic artboards, ‘sinking’ your iPad into its surface. Drawing then becomes more like working with a sheet of paper."
- Stuff Magazine
"The best part is that you can mount the Sketchboard Pro with an iPad Pro on an easel and paint digitally!"
"In many regards, Sketchboard Pro could be the ideal iPad drawing board...magnetic plates to help lock the iPad Pro in place... a genius feature missing on other solutions we’ve tested so far."
Why Sketchboard Pro?
The iPad is a wonderful device and apps like Procreate offer a great creative canvas. The problem with drawing consistent professional work on the iPad is that it can be stressful on your body. Holding the iPad in your hands for hours while you draw can cause numbness in your hands and arms, discomfort on your shoulders from having to float your arm so much while drawing and pain in your neck from having to look down so much. Don't even get us started on back problems.
We wanted to draw professionally from anywhere--a desk, couch, the floor--and feel comfortable doing it.

How can you help?
We figured if we were having these kinds of physical challenges drawing on the iPad, then other artists out there are probably experiencing them, too. Kickstarter has always been such a wonderful community for artists and innovation. We successfully Kickstarted a card game here last year and it's since been picked up by a major publisher for worldwide distribution.
That’s why we feel ready to share the Sketchboard Pro with you and hopefully, you can help us to make it a reality, so that everybody who loves drawing on their iPad, can do so with great comfort and spend more energy on creativity and less on physical stress.
We're so excited to be able to share this with artists who recognize its benefits.
Notes on Budget
We’ve invested all of our own savings on engineering and prototyping the Sketchboard Pro to get us this far, but we need your help to be able to manufacture the final product.
Most of the $90,000 we're raising will pay for making the molds for the Sketchboard Pro. A couple of the molds are considered oversized for injection molding and are considerably expensive. We could save some money by redesigning these large pieces to be pieced together by smaller connecting parts, but this would potentially compromise the strength of the overall piece and add more opportunity for defect in the manufacturing process. The lion's share of the rest goes toward final engineering and shipping.
In addition to the first Sketchboard Pro model, to help us hit our goals, we're offering a $5 reward that gets you a nifty set of original Procreate brushes we created at our Braintreehouse studio to make our game art, along with a fun PDF guide.
If you're a digital artist working in Procreate, Photoshop or Fresco, but Sketchboard Pro isn't necessarily your thing or you just want to wait and see how it develops, then this is the reward for you!
At our art studio, we have a number of professional artists who make art and games. In our vast careers, we've had the privilege of working on amazing entertainment properties including Adventure Time, The Simpsons, and The Iron Giant. In the process of making our art, we have created a collection of custom personal brushes for Procreate and Adobe Photoshop that we're offering for our first reward. These unique brushes have evolved over our years of experience working in these apps and will make a strong addition to any digital artist's toolkit. They are easy to install in your Procreate, Photoshop, or Fresco and will show up right alongside your other brushes.
Before choosing your pledge reward, please be sure you are selecting the right Sketchboard model for your iPad! Below we have each model and the iPads they support. If you do not see yours listed, we might not have a Sketchboard Pro designed yet for your iPad, but you are welcome to message us to verify.

A Word on Shipping Costs
Our friends in Canada, Mexico, and other parts of the world interested in backing may have noticed that shipping seems high at $45+ compared with the US and Europe where shipping is $13 -$15. The reason US and EU shipping costs less is that we have made partnerships with fulfillment companies in those countries making it more affordable. So Sketchboard Pros ordered within Europe ship from our partner in Europe.
We are seeking the same kind of relationships with fulfillment partners in other countries and if we can do anything to reduce the cost of shipping for you we will. The shipping costs you are seeing there now are the best rates we could find for a box with the dimensions for the Sketchboard Pro to your country.
We will continue to develop our fulfillment relationships throughout the campaign and after. If we are able to get a better rate at the time of shipment, we will refund you the difference.
We have lowered some of the rates since launching (please see our updates), but Kickstarter does not allow us to reduce shipping rates for countries where somebody has already pledged from, so in those cases, we will be issuing refunds for the difference.
Once we reach our minimum goal, we're ready to enter the design for manufacturing (DFM) phase where we tighten up the engineering and add small upgrades like the charging port.
This design process takes a couple of weeks. Then we’re able to have our manufacturer start tooling the molds used to make the parts. Once we have that, manufacturing begins and within a couple of months, we’ll have Sketchboard Pros ready to ship!
Braintreehouse is an art studio where we make art and games. We successfully Kickstarted a card game last year that is now being published by Chronicle for worldwide distribution and we’re hard at work on our first video game. We developed the Sketchboard Pro by necessity while making art for our games.
Our engineering partner is Rocketship. They are a team of excellent industrial designers who have developed products in dozens of industries. Their clients include Blendtec, Pelican, Philips, Nalgene, and Easton. Rocketship has guided us throughout our design and prototyping phases and will continue to help us through our DFM and manufacturing phases.

Risks and challenges
Since this is a manufactured product with fairly large parts, there is some risk that the process of tooling the molds could take longer than usual. We will have a representative from our studio on site with our manufacturer through this process to ensure it goes as smoothly as possible and that the molds are perfect.
We have not been able to source a manufacturer for the Sketchboard Pro domestically in the US, so we are manufacturing in China. We anticipate some pauses in the manufacturing process as Chinese New Year falls within our timeline. We have made adjustments to give realistic expectations for when we’ll receive Sketchboards in the US.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
