If movies have taught us one thing about business, it's that there's only one way to succeed: by firing people for no reason!
With this in mind, we're proud to introduce Downsize, a competitive card game for 2-6 players. Each game, Players command a vast corporation, taking turns to fire employees in order to resolve different effects, whether it's controlling your own workforce, making investments, or influencing your competition.
However, there's only so much money to be made, and as players invest and reap the returns, the market veers closer and closer to collapse. Balance your employees wisely, and liquidate your company before you start incurring losses, to ensure that you end up at the top of the pile.
With Downsize, we wanted to create a game that was as easy to play as it was to set up: one that didn't require players to memorise a lengthy rulebook, but didn't skimp on tactical depth or range.
Downsize takes minutes to learn and play, and is surprisingly addictive, with a level of complexity and strategy that rewards players who take the time to master the game. It's suitable for all ages, and is a great way to make friends - or lose them, depending on how ruthlessly you play.
The core game comes in a cardboard tuck box, and the cards are machine-cut from professional quality card stock tough enough to withstand more than a few heated games in the boardroom.
The materials and packaging of the game are subject to change as and when the campaign crosses funding goals, detailed below.
Backers who pay for the Limited Edition Print will receive their choice of 'Department for Motivation' artwork, printed on premium art paper and shipped with a handwritten thank you note from the game's creator.
The prints bring together 1950's aesthetic with re-worked corporate catchphrases, and are perfect for boardrooms, games rooms, or nurseries.
As funding for the project passes the above goals, backers who choose the core game perk will have their copy automatically upgraded.
As we approach the £16,000 mark, we will reveal more information about the 20-card expansion: Market Movements. Once unlocked, the expansion will also be available to Print and Play backers.
During the design process for Downsize, we went to long lengths to ensure that the game was as accessible as possible, in order to rope as many people into our plot for world domination as possible.
As such, we made sure that the game was playable by people with protanopia and deuteranopia colour-blindness, and made the instructions simple and text-light, so that the game is easy to play with little-to-no translation needed if English is not your first language.
Once the campaign is complete, backer surveys will give you the option to indicate a preferred language, and we will endeavour to provide translated rule-sheets and reference cards for the most requested languages on www.BoardGameGeek.com completely free of charge.
As with any board game, Downsize is a labour of love: written and designed in lunch breaks and on days off, and put to the test by friends and family in pubs, coffee shops, living rooms - and, in one instance, after Christmas dinner.
A game is as much the property of it's designer as it is the play-testers and Kickstarter backers, so I would like to thank all of you for helping this bizarre, ruthless little game come to life. Happy Playing!
Risks and challenges
So far, we have gone to all possible lengths to ensure that the post-funding period will go as smoothly as possible. We've been in a long dialogue with our manufacturing and shipping teams, and are confident that everything has been brought into consideration.
For your reference, here is a rough guide of what will happen once the project is completed:
Week 1 & 2: The money will be in limbo between Kickstarter and us. During this time, we will send out backer surveys to get your shipping information, preferred prints, and other information.
Week 3 through 5: We will work with the printers to finalise the necessary documents and paperwork, including any unlocked expansions. Your chosen prints will also be processed at this time, and will likely be shipped prior to the games.
Weeks 6-7: The copies of Downsize will be in transit, from the factory, to the distribution warehouse, to you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
