The gravesites of the US presidents and the memorials that come with them... from the stirring to the stupefying.
For US presidents, there is life after death. It's just a little weird.
In America, we don't just honor our presidents, we immortalize them.
We put them on pedestals. We name streets and schools after them.Heck, we put them on our money.
But for every Lincoln Memorial or Eternal Flame at Arlington, there's something like this:
Yes, a toga. See, we memorialize our presidents, but sometimes the results are more stupefying than stirring. My video series Presidents Who Lie (In State) will look at it all, the gravesites of the US presidents and the memorials that come with them - the great ones, and the, um, different ones.
Six episodes, 17 gravesites, one gargoyle shaped like Darth Vader
Season One starts in Washington DC, where it took nearly a century to build a single monument to the father of our country. (We got better eventually.)
I'll retrace the moving and morbid Abraham Lincoln funeral train, which carried the Great Emancipator from the White House back to Illinois, where he is honored both with ornate statues and sculptures of watermelons. (Seriously.)
And I'll travel to Dallas for the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination, an event that led to nationwide mourning, endless conspiracy theories, even the 24/7 news cycle.
Best of all, I will visit Grover Cleveland's grave on two nonconsecutive occasions.
That's just the start - check out the full outline of Season One on my website to learn more.
What does the Kickstarter funding pay for?
Travel, travel and more travel - airplane flights, transportation, admission to sites, etc. I already have the equipment to film the show, I just need to get to these places to actually do it. I have also arranged to stay with friends and well-wishers in most of the places I'm visiting, and I've sworn off condor egg omelets until the project is finished, so food costs will be a minimum.
What's your "production schedule"?
Hey, nice use of the television lingo! In short:
I'm writing the episodes now.
I'll travel in the summer and fall.
I'll edit the episodes over the winter.
I'll post them to the web in January of February of 2014, at which point I'll start planning Season Two!
What if we raise more than the goal? Then what?
The stretch goal for Season One is $3000 - that would let me go to every single place on the outline and do some really cool extra stuff, like on-site interviews and sidebar features. Definitely hit the stretch goal, you'll be glad you did.
For every $1000 beyond that I'll add an episode to Season One! I have at least three episodes, maybe four, already outlined for the following season, but hey, why wait?
Note: if we raise like a million bucks I probably won't create 997 more episodes.
Why you? Why this? Why you doing this?
Because I love you. first or all.
Because I know these sites inside and out - I've been doing this project already, as a blog and eventual book. I've been to ten gravesites as of April 2013, and eventually I'll go to them all. I've seen some beautiful sights and some really odd ones. I want to share them with you - again, because I love you.
Because these memorials are all around us. Whether or not we realize it, there are memorials to presidents all around us, and I don't just mean the big ones like Mount Rushmore or the Lincoln Memorial, either. Check out the dollar bill if you don't believe me.
Because I'm a real live professional host! By day I'm a radio host in New Hampshire. I've covered several presidential primaries and innumerable presidential candidates. Covering the live ones is harder than covering those who have passed on, believe me.
Because the stories around these sites are totally awesome. Attempted grave robberies, PEZ dispensers, jaw-dropping folk art and ballads written for dogs. All real, all true, all part of the fascinating world of presidential memorials. If you like interesting stuff you will love this series, as much or even more than I love you.
Yes! I love totally awesome stuff. How do I help?
Just go back up to the top of the page and click BACK THIS PROJECT.
But before you do, here's a bobblehead of John F. Kennedy.
Now hop to it! Back this show and let's get out on the trail!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
A video series takes some doing to produce - and you have to rely on people and things outside your control for that to happen. A site might decide it doesn't want me to film there, for example, or the weather might not cooperate. You might get a great shot only to find you left the lens cap on the camera.
I've done a lot to minimize the risks here. For one thing, most of the sites I'm going to film are in public spaces - no permission needed. Plus, as a professional journalist by day I have more credibility and experience in setting up these other shoots than a typical dude with a camera. And I'm writing the scripts in a way that documents the journey as much as the destinations - so any last-minute wrenches in the gears will end up being part of the show!
Oh, and my camera does not have a lens cap, so that's totally taken care of already.
