About

Before Elsa Was A Hero, She Was A Villain. See Disney's FROZEN Like Never Before, As We Explore the Various Iterations of the Film That Never Made It to The Big Screen.

Anna and a much different looking Elsa.
Anna and a much different looking Elsa.

The Plan

The original story for Frozen was much darker - with Elsa being very different from the lovable character we know today. In fact, originally, she was going to be one of the scariest Disney villains of all.

From Hans to Frozen will be a feature-length documentary showcasing archival footage and original designs of The Snow Queen, along with Disney's interpretations of the characters and stories as the project evolved. You will get to see - for the very first time - the way the film looked with a much more villainous character. Bad Elsa will have the spotlight, and will change the way you see Frozen forever. We will also present newly-filmed interviews of Disney historians, artists, theme-park engineers, the creative team behind the film, as well as unveiling the original iterations of the project before becoming the film Frozen.

Another interpretation of Bad/Evil Elsa. She's not singing Let It Go...

This is the complete journey from the original Andersen story, through seven decades, to its release on the silver screen. The documentary will also take a look at the cultural effect of the movie's release and explore the phenomenon the film has created (merchandising, Home video sales, theme park rides, etc). Everything we can possibly find about Frozen will be uncovered and presented for your enjoyment.

I believe it is important to preserve and present the history of motion pictures so that audiences can appreciate and respect the hard work that goes into making them. In the case of Frozen, we will get to see incredibly different versions and be entertained all over again - almost like seeing the film for the first time.

About the Journey

Many iterations of the project were created, all very different and very fascinating. Ranging from animated sequences in a Hans Christian Andersen biopic, a very chilly 1970s Disneyland ride, a more traditionally animated feature in the early 2000s, to the eventual film you see today, (Worth noting: Elsa was originally to be the villain!) From Hans to Frozen will endeavor to present it all.

While few people may know Hans Christian Andersen wrote many popular children's stories (Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Emperor's New Clothes), fewer yet know the story of The Snow Queen - until it inspired the worldwide phenomenon that is Frozen. Even so, the story was widely changed and has taken many different forms from his version to the finished Disney production.

Disney originally wanted to bring The Snow Queen to the big screen in the 1940s in an animated sequence to be featured in an MGM biopic about Andersen. This version was never created, but the story remained very important to him. His plans for the story were put on ice until the 1970s when his interest was again piqued by legendary Disney artist Marc Davis (Snow White, Bambi, Cinderella) for a ride inspired by the story. Beautiful and extensively detailed art was created for The Enchanted Snow Palace - an extremely frigid Disneyland ride - but it ultimately never made it out of the concept phase, until it helped inspire a certain Frozen ride coming our way in 2016.

In the early 2000s, secret animation testing was being done for a traditional 2D animated version of The Snow Queen, with additional 3D computer-generated images by Glen Keane (Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast). You will get the chance to witness the evolving characters, story, and animation before they became Frozen.

The Reason for this Project

Fairy tales inspired me as a child. They inspired my creativity and imagination. They made me dream and believe that I could become anything or anyone I wanted to be. Walt Disney and his creations inspired all of these things as well - and still do.

Walt Disney at work
Walt Disney at work

This project is about uncovering and experiencing the 70+ year journey of bringing Walt Disney's vision of The Snow Queen to the big screen. While Mr. Disney never had the chance to fully develop this project, we all get to see his ideas come to life. This documentary is about celebrating his vision and the process of turning his dream into a reality - including rare artwork and footage not seen by the general public.

I want From Hans to Frozen to be the ultimate companion piece to Frozen.

The Budget

This budget is designed to be the minimum amount needed for the project to be successful. However, I won't cut corners. I also will not allow the project budget to balloon out of control. I want to do this equally as an artist and a fan. Because of this, the budget must be based on something a motivated individual can accomplish with little outside assistance.

Equipment:

Most of the equipment I will be using for the project is already owned in-house by my business. Most of the budget will be for other categories, most notably travel to conduct interviews. A very small amount of the budget may be used to acquire additional hard drive/digital-storage space for the large amount of data that will be needed for the production.

Crew:

I will contract out a few segments of the documentary to independent artists to make sure the production completes on time. This may include initial editing, logging footage, storyboarding, and other assistance in the time-intensive process of cataloging materials.

Travel/Lodging:

If the lodging is inhabitable by humans and isn't covered in mold or fungus, it is good enough for me and my crew.

We will need to travel for interviews and documenting/uncovering behind-the-scenes material and artwork.

Acquiring Archival Footage, Test Footage and Art:

We will borrow and document some original artwork and memorabilia from personal collectors, museums, and libraries across the country. Some instances may arise in which I will need to procure some of this material. These pieces will show the journey of Frozen in a whole new light.

Post-Production:

A very important part of the budget is required to produce the footage to put together the final cut of the documentary. This includes editing, color grading, sound mixing, mastering, encoding, etc. These are extremely important steps in getting the documentary completed and delivered to you.

Music:

The documentary will feature original music written specifically for this production. It will be designed to complement and evoke the same emotions and fun as Frozen itself.

Festival Submission:

I plan to submit the finished product to film festivals around the country. These fees add up quickly. Word of mouth will be the main vehicle to publicize this film, and I want to reach as large an audience as possible.

I will stretch this budget as far as it can possibly go, and put all the necessary resources into making this a beautiful piece of art - worthy of being a companion to Frozen.

The 'FROZEN EFFECT'

Frozen has become one of the most beloved Disney films of all-time, winning multiple Academy Awards in the process. Its signature song, Let It Go, was sung and released in an astounding 25 different languages,  winning an Oscar for best song of the year. The film also won an Oscar for best animated feature. Merchandise from Frozen remains among the most sought-after items to this day.

A sequel and a new Frozen ride (partially inspired by the 1970s ride by Davis) are around the corner. The "Frozen Ever After" ride will debut in 2016 at Disney's Epcot Park in Florida.

Disney recently unveiled this first look at the Frozen Ever After ride that will open at Epcot in 2016.
Disney recently unveiled this first look at the Frozen Ever After ride that will open at Epcot in 2016.

Frozen holds a special place in my heart and is a phenomenon around the world. It is a modern, animated masterpiece. It is well written, beautifully directed, and leaves an important and powerful message - love conquers all. More than that, it inspires creativity and fulfills the long sought after dream of Walt Disney - the man who still inspires millions of people around the world.

Frozen's footprint in pop culture is immense, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future.

About Me

Almost ready for my closeup - I'm the one on the left...
Almost ready for my closeup - I'm the one on the left...

I am an Editor and Director who was graduated from the University of Oregon with a film degree in Cinema Studies. I started my own video production business in Eugene, Oregon in June 2014 - Thru the Reel Films. I have professional experience creating short films, documentaries and promotional videos across Oregon. I have produced promotional videos for jazz clubs and community college and rehabilitation center recruitment and promotional material. Some of my most fun projects have been promotional films for a dinosaur exhibit and personal film projects for friends. My most meaningful project has been producing a film to encourage people to support research in Cystic Fibrosis, a life-threatening disease which affects my fiancé.

Filmmaking and storytelling are my true passions in life. I have never wanted to do anything else. Steven Spielberg (both my childhood and present-day hero) once said, "I dream for a living." I am happy to say that with your help and support with this project, I will get to live and experience that same dream.

Thank you for your support,

Bradley Bjornstad

Risks and challenges

With any video production there are always risks. I see those risks more as challenges - challenges that are meant to be overcome. Any hurdle put in my way will help enrich the story, and bring it to avenues that might possibly have been left unexplored. I welcome these challenges, because, no matter what, I am going to make the most extensive and entertaining documentary that any Disney and Frozen fan could ever hope for.

The main risk in undertaking a project such as this is not gaining the cooperation of individuals or entities needed to obtain materials. I have commitments from individuals owning original materials to allow their use in the film. Through contacts inside the Disney organization, I have received positive comments and direct encouragement to pursue this project. From these initial discussions, I believe the risk of taking on this project, and failing to produce the documentary, is very low.

With your support I will make this documentary something people will want to watch again and again - an ultimate companion piece to Frozen.
