About this project
'Creative Process' is an animated short about the conception of a concept.
How a lifetime of experiences can be collected, interpreted, and expressed into a single 2-Dimensional work of Art.
This film illustrates how to deconstruct that image - and witness the process of it's creation by taking the viewer through the life of a mannequin whose world is ultimately frozen into the perfect composition.
The idea for this film has been swimming around in my head for 10 months, ever since the release of my first short film - Black Light Stop Motion Short - which can be viewed here :
Over the last two months I've been devoting all of my efforts towards developing the story-line, testing new animation techniques, and getting in contact with the right people to realize the full potential of this film.
My hardwork has paid off!
The Ultra-Violet industry leader WildFire Inc. has been extremely generous and agreed to sponsor 'Creative Process' by providing me with their top-of-the-line products - including invisible UV pigment to create the stunning Dual Image effect at the end of the film, as well as a dimmable black light to best showcase that image.
Without their support this film would not be possible.

In addition, I've been in contact with sound designer Chris Child - known better as the artist Kodomo.
The music he produces is exactly what I had in mind for the soundtrack for this film, and I'm thrilled to have him interested in the project.
In addition, he is open to the idea of me creating a music video for one of his tracks as part of his compensation - which would be an honor.
I really dig his approach to making sound, and am very excited about the possibility of our talents becoming intertwined.

About the Film
Comprised of approximately 9,000 photographs - the film begins with an artist alone in his studio trying to create a poster, but failing to come up with a worth-while idea.
A time-lapse captures the minutes and hours whizzing by on the clock as the pile of crinkled up ideas builds on the floor.
Eventually the artist decides to go to bed and leaves the room.
Footsteps are heard, and a bottle of phosphorescent paint gets knocked over on the drafting table. Small glowing footprints lead away from the puddle until finally reaching a light switch. The switch is turned on, the mannequin is revealed(born), and we then follow him on his condensed/miniature experience of Life.
Self Realization, Socialization, Graduation, and eventually struggling to find an Occupation amongst a sea full of stick figures created from pipe-cleaners.
During this journey the effects transition from a 3-D stop motion to a hand drawn 2-D animated world before coming back again to 3-D once the main character returns to the 'real world' - where everything has changed drastically since he was a little 4.5" mannequin.
Our main character becomes a visual artist, and creates B&W artwork underneath a bonsai tree. Occasionally a pipe cleaner stick figure stops to sit for a portrait...
The world is monochromatic, until one day the mannequin notices a Red apple hanging from one of the tree branches. He collects it and takes a bite - his veins begin pulsating with a peculiar blue glow. He returns to work, and his once B&W work becomes saturated with colors. He is fascinated and gets lost creating before finally realizing a crowd has now gathered and is watching him work.
He hands one stick figure a pair of miniature 3D glasses. As soon as it puts them on he transforms into a colorful figure. The effect spreads.
After sometime, the mannequin decides to take a nap under the now brilliantly colorful tree. The viewer then experiences a dream within a dream, where to world turns from slightly surreal to entirely abstract.
The mannequin wakes up inspired, and begins work on a LARGE Dual-Image mural which brings to light issues - good and bad - he observes with this world he exists in.
Under normal light, we view the impressive structures mankind has created on the left of the composition - glorifying our achievements. On the right, mountains off in the distance with a park in the foreground. A nicely trimmed tree stands tall in the middle of the composition. A blue sky hangs over this ideally perfect world us humans have created for ourselves.
Under Ultra-Violet lighting we witness the glory of mother nature. The buildings are now dark and pushed to the background. The tree has branched out and is full of ripe fruit. The park is crawling with vividly colorful animals under a sky filled with the brilliant hues of an orange sunset.
Upon completion of his mural - the mannequin returns once more to the light switch, and fades in/out the normal/UV lighting to reveal a smooth transition of the Dual Image Mural.
The artist wakes up inspired, and begins vigorously creating a poster.
The imagery which had been created in his dream, and inspired by a dream within his dream.
Why fund 'Creative Process'?
I have three goals with this film:
-To push the boundaries of animation techniques
-To properly exhibit the visual phenomenon of Thermochromic/UV dual imagery
A little over a year ago I watched an animation by Anthony F. Schepperd.
"An animated mind melt into a post human New York where TV and animals rule. All cast to the sincerely melodic soul of Blockhead's 'The Music Scene'."
The 5 minutes and 22 seconds of film was more influential to me as a visual artist than 4 years of art school. The emotion I got from experiencing it is the true definition of being Inspired.
But I have since exhausted the effect the animated short has on me as I've watched it countless times, as I'm sure others have too - so what I aim to do with 'Creative Process' is to create another film of a similar caliber to install that same feeling I initially received into others.
Essentially, your support is the factor which is allowing this Artistic film to remain just that; an Artistic film.
Thanks to KickStarter - I potentially have the opportunity to realize this vision without compromising its content/integrity by trying to 'sell' it to a company.
And without the commercial aspect, the film truly has the ability to Affect.
So what exactly do your generous donations go towards?
Soundtrack - Chris Child is an already successful musician/sound designer and cannot sell his talent for free. He is willing to work with me due to his respect for Independent/Artistic films - but I must still compensate him for his time. A majority of the funds raised here will go towards making the collaboration between us possible.
Bonsai - A major prop within the film will be the miniature tree which the mannequin resides/creates under. This bonsai tree must be the perfect fit for the part as to be as powerful as the Tree of Life in 'The Fountain'.
Materials/Supplies - Mannequins, Thermochromic pigment, 5 ft Canvas, Miniature easel, Miniature fountain/pond in my drafting table, etc.
Preparation has already begun - including story-boarding, testing ThermoChromic animation techniques, and preliminary sketches of the mural/painting.
Filming will begin in mid-late September.
Completion of the film is expected in late November, with a release date sometime in December.
Creative Animation Techniques
I will be pushing the limitations of my animation abilities in 'Creative Process' with both 3D stop motion and 2D hand drawn animation - as well as camera work.
There are however two techniques which I would like to describe as I feel they are Unique and will help take this film to the next level.
Using a GoPro HD camera, I will be utilizing the size/wide-angle lens to grant the viewer the perspective of a fly. The viewer is transformed into a fly as it buzzes around the room towards objects/lights it is naturally attracted to - before eventually landing on my desk. I then try to kill the fly but it dodges my first attempt. The second hit is a success, providing the perfect transition to the title screen before cutting to a regular 35mm perspective.
Thermochromic Animation -
Thermochromic pigment is a black powder which can be mixed with a clear base coat to create a dark grey paint which turns transparent when heat is applied. This application has been used commercially on products such as coffee mugs - but I aim to be the first to use the medium as an animation technique by using hot/cold utensils to create slight adjustments in the image frame by frame, and am currently designing processes to do it as best as is possible. In addition, the medium can be combined with the use of regular black/white acrylic paint to create stunning monochromatic dual images such as day turning into night.
I've not seen this phenomenon yet fully explored artistically and hope to do so in 'Creative Process'
One Last Note
I have already sacrificed countless hours of my time conceptualizing/planning for the creation of this film, and I expect to be spending several hundred more once the filming process begins.
I do not mind working on this project without any financial gain - it is a Dream which is becoming True.
But Please, join me in the production of this short film, and help me raise the funds to realize this creation which I have put so much time and effort into.
The entire inventory of Artwork/Custom painted apparel I've spent the past year making is available for you in exchange for helping me make this film possible.
My most sincere Thanks for your time in reading this entry,
Sadly, No. I've checked on pricing and it would not be worth it financially to you or me to ship outside the country.
The film will not be completed/released until December
However - the Shirts/Paintings can be shipped out in October.
