About

Show Description: Lainey Dwyer reluctantly enters the male-dominated world of livestock insemination when her "real" life hits the skids. But when her father suffers a massive heart attack, she must decide if she will escape back into her familiar past, or assume the shit-kicking role of a high-stakes, cattle insemination mogul.

Complete Bull, our in-development television drama, will be my 4th independent production, but my first fictional one. It seems fitting that my first foray into an imagined world is set in the type of place I knew best as a child: the cattle pastures of the Midwest. We give the sometimes-overlooked women in agriculture a nod as well. Complete Bull was just awarded a Produce Iowa /Iowa Arts Council grant of $30,000 to film part of the first episode. However, I need your help: I only get the grant if we match it.

Introduction:

We will be filming a "proof of concept" for Complete Bull's pilot episode next spring/summer. Our goal is to build something that will allow us to either attract investors, a production partner, or a distributor to help fund the entire first season in a subsequent year.

  • Showrunner/Lead Writer: Colleen Bradford Krantz, owner of Pink Spear Productions, is an independent journalist, author and  filmmaker. Her latest project, "Unintended," a true-story miniseries looking at how society reacted to unplanned pregnancies a century ago, is currently in post-production. Several years earlier, Krantz directed and co-produced the independent documentary "West by Orphan Train," which won a regional Emmy in 2015. She wrote and co-produced another documentary, “Train to Nowhere; Inside an Immigrant Death Investigation." Her 2010 non-fiction book of the same name was the starting point for the film. Before becoming an author and filmmaker, Colleen spent a decade as a newspaper reporter, working at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and The Des Moines Register. When not doing her own independent film and television work, she produces stories for the nationally-distributed agriculture show, Market to Market.
  • Krantz has worked with many talented crew members and actors/actresses on these past projects. And has already begun work to sign them on to this project.
  • The money conditionally awarded to this project is a new Greenlight Grant awarded by the state of Iowa's Department of Cultural Affairs (via Produce Iowa and the Iowa Arts Council), and we need to match it to receive it. It was one of only four productions awarded a grant out of 349 requests.
  • We can only spend the grant and matching fund money to hire Iowa cast, crew and vendors for our proof of concept filming. (Anyone hired from outside the state has to be paid for with additional funds we might raise.) We will be doing most of the filming in Clayton and Dubuque counties. Clayton County is 74th of the 99 Iowa counties when it comes to per capita income as of the 2010 Census. The idea is to bring tax dollars back to Iowa communities that need them. We will have about 65 actors/actresses on screen between the various scenes we will film, and are to hire Iowa crew and vendors as well. The positive impact we could offer this region could easily be ten times as large in both economic impact and use of Iowa talent/vendors if we are eventually able to complete an entire first season - or the full series - in Iowa.

What We Need & What You Get

Here are the details:

  • We need to raise $30,000 to match this grant in order to accept it. And likely more to hire a well-enough-known actress as main character to help us sell the show. If you want the tax deduction, the donations can go through our production partner, Storytellers International, a 501c3 created for video production storytelling. All this money must go to Iowans, per the grant's rules, and will pay for talent, crew, props, site rental, etc.
  • We offer the following as thank-you gift/reward for contributing. I mean, who doesn't want a sperm pen? See below for specifics on those thank-you gifts.
Yes, there's a little cartoonish sperm that floats between the bull and the cow. Thanks to the legit company, Hawkeye Breeders, that let us buy some as a reward for you.

  • Even if we don't meet our goal, we will use the donated funds to make a scaled-down version of the work sample. If needed, we can film fewer scenes or cut costly scenes from the proof of concept. We do believe the best opportunity to sell or draw an investor for the full series will be if we can do this work sample as planned. The script has gained some early attention in Hollywood and we'd like to build on that.

The Impact

Complete Bull is unusual in that it will drop viewers into the profession of artificial insemination technician, a job many don't know exists. But the story is much deeper, and we hope the impact will be as well.

  • Americans are becoming increasingly isolated from - and unfamiliar with - farm or ranch life. Fewer than 1 percent of Americans now claim farming as an occupation. And that percentage is likely to continue to drop. At the same time, the nation seems to be facing what feels like growing regional divides. It's time for the major metro areas and coasts to get a better and more engaging look at what they think of as "flyover country." This series has Bradford Krantz, who grew up in this world, as lead writer. She drops you into a sometimes-sweet but also starkly honest  rural America.
  • We will be including a main character with roots in Central America. The rural/urban divide isn't the only one in the U.S. We are ready to hear some words of wisdom - even if they are coming from a fictional character who grew up in a small Iowa town while his father talked of Guatemala.
  • The money spent from both the grant and the equivalent matching funds must be spent only with Iowans (any non-Iowans must be paid for with funds raised beyond the combined $60,000). Some of the counties where we plan to film fall in the bottom tier of Iowa counties when it comes to average income. Bringing this money into these beautiful small towns will give them a small boost, and a major boost if we can ultimately film the full series there.
  • Bradford Krantz has produced and sold two major productions nationally: the documentary called "Train to Nowhere; Inside an Immigrant Death Investigation" was sold to Netflix under a three-year contract; a second documentary called "West by Orphan Train" is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Her agent is now working to sell her latest project, the limited series called "Unintended," which is now in the final stages of post-production.
No, Iowa is not all cornfields. And, no, we don't grow potatoes. That's Idaho.

Other Ways You Can Help

Please do consider chipping in whatever you can to help us make the filming of part of the pilot episode of Complete Bull happen. But if you can't help financially right now, we'd still love your help:

  • Please tell others about this work and our crowdfunding campaign so we can carry forward with this important project.
  • Use the Indiegogo share tools, as well as social media to spread the word.

Risks and challenges

Risks & Challenges
We've considered possible challenges, and feel confident that we can overcome all. We should explain the details, though:

The biggest risk is in not raising enough to be able to accept the entire grant. It won't kill the project, but it would require us to reduce the quality of the production to the point it would be harder to sell the concept of the series to Hollywood.

If we were to get stuck and not be able to raise adequate matching funds through crowdfunding, we will search for larger investors.
