About

Even though we met our goal rather quickly, we're still keeping the Kickstarter rolling! Thanks very much to all the backers so far. The more backers and pre-orders for the book, the more copies we can donate to libraries and get this book into as many hands as possible. The truth is that the narratives and experiences in Bodies and Barriers need to be heard. Your pre-orders help us plan book events and provide free copies of the book for libraries.

I’m Adrian Shanker, editor of Bodies and Barriers: Queer Activists on Health a new anthology coming out in 2020. I started working on this book because it didn’t exist and it needed to. Far too often, LGBT people like me experience challenges navigating a healthcare system that simply wasn’t made for us and doesn’t work for us. This book compiles stories and experiences from twenty-six queer activists. We as LGBT people experience healthcare challenges pervasively, affecting every part of our body and every part of our lives.

This book arranges these stories chronologically so health care professionals, students in health professions, policy makers, and fellow activists can work to improve the landscape of healthcare available in our communities. Bodies and Barriers is the first book written by LGBT healthcare consumers specifically to inform and improve healthcare for the LGBT community. Bodies and Barriers features twenty-six essays written by queer activists, some well-known, some up-and-coming. All artfully unpack the current issues that LGBT people face in our current healthcare system through sharing their own experiences and citing existing data. Our goal is to enact change within our broken healthcare system and make it work more equitably for all of us.  With your help, we can get this book into as many hands as possible. See all the great rewards below, and pre-order your copy today!

Bodies and Barriers will be published by PM Press, co-published by Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center, and released in early 2020. We are crowdfunding to get this book, and the important narratives inside of it, out into the world as far as possible. The more funds we raise, the more copies we can print. We also want to get free copies of the book into libraries, community centers, schools, and elsewhere. We want to host lots of book events so we can bring conversations about queer health equity to the places where those conversations need to happen. We also want to develop marketing materials so that healthcare professionals and policy makers will learn about the book and spend time reading it.

Bodies and Barriers provides an indispensable blueprint for change. We don’t just want it sitting on a shelf in a bookstore, we want the book read far and wide. YOU can help us make that happen by pre-ordering your copy (and, if you’d like, a copy for your library) today!

Praise:

“Now, more than ever, we need Bodies and Barriers to shine a spotlight on how and why good healthcare for LGBTQ people and our families is such a challenge. Bodies and Barriers provides a roadmap for all who are ready to fight for health equity — in the doctor’s office, in the halls of government, or in the streets.” - Rea Carey, Executive Director, National LGBTQ Task Force

“These patient and caregiver experiences ring so loudly in today’s environment, when we have compelling evidence of a need for widespread practice change, yet the medical establishment remains slow to respond to the calls from those patients and their caregivers who are asking so boldly – and rightfully – for those changes. Bodies and Barriers is a call to action for learners at all levels, in all health fields, to start now, creating a future where health equity is the norm, and no one is denied the opportunity to thrive.” - Scott Nass, MD, MPA, President, GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality

Bodies and Barriers is edited by Adrian Shanker, with a foreword by Rachel L. Levine, M.D. and an Afterword by Kate Kendell.

Risks and challenges

The book already has a publisher (PM Press) with a scheduled release date early in 2020. Due to the nature of publishing, there could be a delay in the final print date for the books, however it won’t hold the project back. Additional funds will make it possible for us to provide free copies of the book to libraries, and to support the cost of the book tour. We’re in the process of compiling a list of possible stops, and depending on the number of cities and final budget, we may not be able to visit every city to which we’re invited. Donate at any level to receive updates on final book tour dates and locations. Thanks for your support!
