I’m Rosie Matheson, a 22-year old portrait photographer and film maker from the UK. I work exclusively with analog film media.
I started the Boys project in late 2015 with the aim of documenting how young men express themselves physically and emotionally in their every day lives. The portraits examine masculine norms at a moment when the subcultures which give young men their identity are becoming increasingly invisible to the mainstream. The project is about bringing attention to ordinary people who don’t realise how special and interesting they are and whose faces tell a unique, extraordinary story.
So far, the photography world has responded very positively to Boys with international recognition from Getty Images, British Journal of Photography (UK), International Centre of Photography (New York) and Tate Modern (UK).
The Boys Kickstarter campaign will take the project to the next level – from stills to a short documentary film made in partnership with filmmaker Kaj Jefferies. Boys – The Film expands on the portrait project, by giving each subject an opportunity be heard by the audience. It gives the audience an opportunity to compare their impressions and assumptions about these faces with their true stories.
It will be co-directed, shot and edited by myself and Kaj. We are exclusively using Kodak Super8 film stock and shot on a variety of cameras.
Crowdfunding this project through Kickstarter will give us as content creators the control and flexibility we need to produce a work that stays true Boys’ raw, authentic original concept. Maintaining that original focus and creative independence is critical to us telling these Boy’s stories in a way that honors them, first and foremost.
We have also learned that authenticity is very important to our audience. Using Kickstarter we can have a direct relationship with our audience, and give them a unique, one-of-a-kind experience that mainstream publishers are unable to provide.
Super8 film is expensive to purchase and process. Your funding will allow us to travel to shoot more boys, and to spend more time documenting each boy’s unique story. We also want to use a professional audio team on sound design and music licensing.

We will be exhibiting the photos and screening the video in London in late July.

Risks and challenges
Risks and challenges:
Our main challenge is ensuring that we capture enough footage to build a successful piece of final work. Managing this risk is something we do every day as professional visual creative and, with sufficient funding, we are confident of producing something really memorable.
We have storyboarded and scheduled the whole film with the intention of shooting and completing this film by the end of June.
Please get in touch if you have any questions about the production or other way you may be able to help.
