About

Project PVA is a universal platform, D.I.Y. electric guitar kit.

It makes a new generation of instruments available through a novel, increasingly sustainable approach to their creation.

Our approach uses available, locally sourced, alternative and standard materials while taking advantage of existing aftermarket components and  fabrication methods.

An example of how PVA can incorporate a standard 22-fret neck, tremolo bridge, hardware and electronics shown with clear pickguard.

  --------------------------------------------------------------------------

We require the requested funds to cover our overhead to include:

- parts and/or materials for all rewards offered.

- local, dedicated shop/studio workspace.

- full access to Tech Shop's tools and facilities.

- some necessary efficiency tools (Surface Planer, Drill press, Air   compressor).

- a  single standard equipped guitar workbench.

All forms & most parts will be created from scratch at Boyleworks Design Studio while also taking advantage of the digitally-driven cutting tools at any of three accessible Tech-Shop facilities (within a 30 mile radius of us) in the bay area, where we have access.

All precision-cut parts will return to Boyleworks Studio for final shaping, drilling, fretwork and finish, by at least one highly qualified technician.

All Core-parts come together through a versatile system which allows for recombination towards multiple unique profiles.

Our standard flagship guitar will have the profile combination shown below. (As we move forward, we will be developing a range of profiles as inspired by many classic solid-body styles).

The common elements of the kit will include:

•A Bamboo Ring Frame and 2 wood body extensions (armrest and legrest), and pickguard. Pickguard available in clear(shown in removable paper), white or black.

PVA Core-parts

Core body example

•Wood core-body in one of two featured materials, Poplar or Ash, (routed for a universal series of parts configurations).

•All hardware and pickguard mounting-screw holes are located and pre-drilled for accurate assembly.

The "EARLY ADOPTER" reward will be made available as a Core-components kit. All standard Core-parts, one ring, one body, two body extensions and Hard-Eastern maple neck, will be provided in one READY-TO-ASSEMBLE package.

YOU will ultimately be the maker of your Guitar!

We are consummately familiar with every aspect that goes into producing a great playing and sounding instrument.

We have made it easy for your instrument to come together and become all it can be.

The EARLY-ADOPTER Kit includes an open-market sourced, 22-fret Hard-Eastern Maple neck with a synthetic nut blank fitted and cut for string spacing and slot depth.

The proper Installation of the neck-to-body is important and simple. The neck is pre-fit and ready to bolt into place.

We will post several simple tips with which to guide you towards successful installation and adjustments.

One extra nut blank will be included. Additional nut blanks will be available on request at a nominal cost to include shipping or can be ordered directly from several suppliers which we will list.

The basic Early-Adopter Kit comes ready to "drop-in" a standard classic "V-Tremolo" bridge, tuners, wiring network, and pickups of your own choice.

We will post samples of some suggested and broadly available parts from which to source.

Many unique versions of these parts are available to choose from on the O.E.M.  (original equipment manufacturers) or custom-parts market. This is what makes the PVA platform so versatile!

All recommended parts have been carefully considered for performance and reliability (based on our past experience working with retro-fit parts) and are mid to high-market quality. We cannot make any guarantees beyond those made by the suppliers you order from.

All core-parts will come predrilled or marked as necessary for accurate hole placement. Connecting screws will be provided for Core-parts and pickguards.

A basic instruction guide will be provided for getting things together correctly. we want you to have fun!

All Core-parts are carefully matched to make possible a final set-up with a high standard of playability.

We will provide support towards this with tips and tricks for proper assembly and basic set-up for playability.

Being equipped with a small number of high-quality adjustment tools (listed below), makes it possible to complete a guitar that meets professional standards.

Recommended hand-tools for assembly

Fine-point, small-size swivel-handle Philips-head screwdriver:  This tool will be very handy when it comes to adjusting pick-up height and bridge-saddle height-adjustment screws.

• Small to medium-size LONG-barrel (at least 10" overall length) Philips head screwdriver (shown above). We cannot overstate how versatile this one tool will be towards assembling and adjusting your new instrument! The long barrel will make it possible to effectively access assembly and adjustment screws from angles, while offering grip and torque to loosen or tighten them.

NOTE: We recommend you only use a hand held screwdriver when tightening the assembly screws into the wood parts.  Hand-tightening lets you feel when the screw wants to stop turning, which is the point you know the screw is properly seated.

All core parts will come with assembly screw-holes drilled to sufficient depth. Using the beeswax (shown above) will let the screw turn into the wood with less resistance, as you gently tighten until you feel it stop.

• One each of  a fine to medium sized Metric or Standard-Inch Hex multiple allen-wrench set. The wrench sizes will be determined by what your sourced parts require.  The "L" shaped wrenches will work fine but if you want real ease of control for the finer (bridge saddle-height adjustment screws), find a straight wrench with handle similar to that seen above left (next to the adjustable jaw wrench).

One 6-inch metal ruler marked for 32nd-inch increments and milli-meters as seen above.

• One 6-inch adjustable jaw nut wrench as seen in upper left corner. This  is the most universal tool for tightening hex nuts for jacks, tuners, and audio pots, as you can make fine adjustments for metric or standard sized hardware.

• A crank-handled tuner-key turner: this tool will greatly speed up tightening or loosening all strings, it is indispensable for quick and easy string installation.

A medium-sized pair of wire-nippers for trimming the string-ends. Trim the strings as close to the post as possible. We will post a video on properly stringing an electric guitar.

A small block of Beeswax (paraffin will also work). Apply wax to screw threads to relieve friction resistance when turning screws.

• A good portable digital-tuner.

We have found a plethora of free, on-line tutorials for performing a full set-up on a completely assembled instrument. We will post links to a few that we like.

Additionally, upon reaching our goal...we will post 'how-to' videos of assembly tips on this page as well as our own instructions to help you complete your project.

PVA core-parts kit and full instrument reward fulfillment schedule:

•For the PRO-PLAYER and ROCK-STAR rewards, we are developing  our own 22-fret Bamboo neck with a synthetic nut blank installed, pre-marked for accurate slotting. One spare nut blank is included.

PVA's Bamboo Neck: Available for pro players and Rock Star rewards

Our Bamboo neck is built using a super strong laminated-curve method and is fully guaranteed from any functional defects taking place under normal use for one year (excepting normal fret and nut-surface wear). The all-bamboo neck is our own unique design. We pre-drill for six on-a-side tuner arrangement with straight string-pull through the nut and one classic, single-rod-style truss rod.  The neck will feature standard high-profile fretwire.  It will have a classic, full-rounded "C"  backshape which will be comfortable for most players. You will have the option of either a Full or Medium overall thickness for neck backshape by request.

For the PRO-PLAYER reward, the fingerboard will have a very durable, polished clear-poly surface with standard, solid round-dot profile fret-position markers. The frets will be leveled, crowned and polished, ready for final setup. Otherwise, all parts will be sealed and lacquered only,  ready to be prepped and custom-finished by professionals if desired, (although not necessary for durability or functionality).

The initial core-body will be made available in either choice of Ash or Poplar domestic hardwoods with a standard classic "Strat"-Style V-trem  and universal routed pickup-control cavity (see above "Core-Body" image) that will accept either of two basic wiring networks.

1)  Pickguard cut out for classic single-coil configuration; bridge, middle, and neck positions.

2)  Pickguard cut out for two classic Humbucker-style pick-ups in neck and bridge position configuration (as seen in demo).

Both PRO-PLAYER configurations consist of a pre-wired signal network including  2-audio 'pots' and output jack+plate (see image).

You have a choice of either a classic toggle selector switch (for humbuckers) or a classic 5-position rotary switch (for single coils), ready for pick-ups to be put in place.

We will send out a survey with a pickguard and control layout plan for you to indicate a preferred location for knobs and switch.

You will supply your own pick-ups. We know that every player has their own preferences, and since pick-ups are more closely related to the signal chain/amplifier, you probably know what you need better than us.

For all ROCK-STARS, we will start with the basic Core-parts bamboo hoop and core-body which can be selected in a hardwood or softwood of your choice (some limits in materials will apply), and bamboo neck.

You will use our survey to request the body material, the pickups, neck back-shape, basic wiring network and control layout, bridge (non-tremolo, standard tremolo, or locking tremolo) and tuners. (Locking tremolo system choices are limited).

Exclusive to the ROCK STAR reward, the core-body extensions will be available in two profile sets.

1) Flagship PVA Core-parts profile set.

2) One custom shaped set of body parts profiles (some limits will apply).

Thank you for  your interest in Project PVA and and considering supporting our first Kickstarter campaign!!

Risks and challenges

All rewards will be created and shipped in the order they were received.

Artwork, Pick-cards and T-shirts:
Our chosen suppliers are proven to be able to meet their own projected availability and delivery times as quoted.

We will minimize the impacts from any unpredictable delays in several ways:

For the Pick-cards, t-shirts and concept-rendering prints, our original content is complete. We have firm delivery quotes from each of the vendors based on the amounts we order. We plan to be able to begin delivery within two weeks after the successful conclusion of the campaign.

Parts and Materials:
Regular availability is one of the key factors for PVA's sustainability.
We have sourced reliable materials and hardware suppliers in close proximity to us whenever possible. From the very beginning, our design strategy prioritizes local/regional and national sources and suppliers along every stage of production for required raw materials, parts and processes.

Our goal is to take practical advantage of existing sustainable materials where ever they become available. Because PVA's modular parts are smaller, where we do use hardwood, we can take advantage of more readily available stock.

Our two principal sources for the bamboo we need are local (northern California. We can visit their sites to order and pick up materials as needed. We have an additional supplier in Southern California.

Our domestic hard and softwoods are more broadly available, FSC- certified-sustainable, and are available throughout the state from several wholesale lumber suppliers.

For our core-parts kit, the specialty hardware needs are relatively small. We will be sourcing a specific common standard attachment screw and Insert to be delivered in one mass quantity.

For our Basic Complete Guitar, all standard hardware and electronics will be available through consistently reliable domestic supply companies. Delays due to supply and demand for a certain part, while rare, can occur. We are dealing directly with proven suppliers and catalogues who quote realistic in-stock and ship-dates for our orders.

Manufacturing workspace:
Until we procure our own shop space, we are well equipped to fulfill our reward obligations. There are three Tech-Shop® locations within a 30 mile radius of our base shop. Immediately following the successful funding of our campaign, we will have regular access to workspace adjoining laser, water-jet and Shopbot®-3d cutting technology.

Packaging & Shipping:
All parts will be shipped insured, in a ready-to-assemble or a partially assembled state. We may choose to break down the complete Core-parts set to facilitate a more robust package. (i.e. the neck removed from the body).

Order of fulfillment will follow the order of contributions.

Delivery for the basic core parts kit reward will begin 30-45 days after campaign ends.
Delivery for the Basic complete guitar reward will begin 45-60 days after campaign ends.

You can see a more detailed schedule of our fulfillment timing strategy above.

All ROCK STAR rewards will be completed on their own schedule as quoted upfront.

All Core-parts kits are shipped nationwide ( add $20.00 - 30.00 depending on location.) International (shipping costs to be determined) arranged in advance.)

All PRO-ARTISTS instruments will be shipped domestically and internationally (shipping costs to be determined), as arranged in advance.

All ROCK STAR rewards will be shipped worldwide(International shipping cost to be determined).

Our Promise:
Supporters will be promptly updated concerning any delays, with a fresh projection for deliveries of any reward quantities.

All contributors will receive progress updates from us as deliverables are completed.

We will share our progress, technical support, and tutorials on an ongoing basis primarily through this project site as well as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
