About

We are aspiring inventors with full-time 9 to 5 jobs, but we've got an idea we hope might get us out of them!  We're not an established company.  We don't have corporate backing like many of the projects you see on Kickstarter.  While companies that do often use Kickstarter as an e-commerce channel or a way to launch product extensions, Kickstarter really is the only channel we have to launch the only thing we've ever invented (two things if you count the Beer Timer separately). We don't have a building or even a fax machine (do people still use those?) - all we've got is an idea and a lot of heart. We think it's a pretty good idea, and we are hoping for a chance to make it happen with your help. Isn't that what Kickstarter is really all about?  Thank you for taking a moment to read through our story and check out our idea.

On an uneventful night of enjoying some adult beverages in James' condo, Toby and James were brainstorming inventions.  As their wives played Scattergories on the living room coffee table, the miniature hourglass timer used in the game sat next to a half empty bottle of Jack Daniels and a shot glass, beckoning their creativity.

"Why don't we make a shot glass that works the same way as that hourglass?"  BOOM - REVOLUTIONARY!  Well, maybe that's an overstatement (even if they thought it wasn't at the time), but a vehicle for making drinking more fun - ABSOLUTELY!

So what is it?  The Shot Timer (patent pending) is a two-chambered shot glass that works like a 60-second hourglass timer, and you use it to play drinking games.  We've designed two versions - one made for a shot, and one made for a 12 oz. beer, which we creatively call the Beer Timer.

Turn any game into a drinking game with the Shot Timer!

The Shot Timer

How does it work?  The Shot Timer can be used with any drink of your choice - whiskey, tequila, beer, whatever. Pick your poison! And yes, it works with non-alcoholic beverages too. After you fill it up and cap it, you have one minute until the libation drains from the top chamber into the bottom chamber - game time!  When the time's up, bottom's up!  Flip it, uncap it, and take the shot (or chug the beer).

What's it for?  DRINKING GAMES.  Take any timer-based game, and replace the traditional timer with the shot timer.  The loser when the time runs out takes the drink.  It can be used with games you already play, like Scattergories, or it can also be used to play a game we've designed, like Shahtzee.  You can even make up for own games!

We've played with the Shot Timer, and it's a blast.  We want to take the fun that we've been having with our little invention to the masses.  Drinking is already fun, but we think that our little invention makes it even more fun. We're here to enhance your drinking experience!

GAMES

  • Games you already play - Scattergories, Boggle, Pictionary, Guesstures, Cranium, and more.
  • Shatzee - Players roll five dice until they get five-of-a-kind. After getting five matching numbers, the dice are passed on. Meanwhile, the shot timer drains. Whoever is left with the dice when the time runs out takes a drink.
  • Any of the Minute-to-Win-It games - our favorite involves bouncing ping pong balls into stacking red cups.
  • Use it with Cards Against Humanity to speed up the game and add a little pain.
  • It's always fun to use the Shot Timer to make time based wagers (i.e. I'll bet my team scores before the time is up).

Where We Are Now

We've made a working prototype, and now we need to transfer that design to something mass-producable.  You might be surprised to find out this wasn't as easy as just drilling a hole in a cup.  Fluid dynamics is gnarly, and we spent too much time sleeping during physics class in high school.

We've compiled a list of games its compatible with, and we've designed a number of games for it.  This is an ongoing process that we continue to work on daily.

In addition, we've applied for the proper patents and trademarks associated with our product.

Why 30K?

All we have right now is a prototype.  We built it out of shot glasses we had in our cupboards and spare parts we found at Ace Hardware and Home Depot.  We understand it's not perfect.  We need 30K to make it perfect and to make injection molds for mass production (which cost about 10K each).  Our ultimate design includes a single-piece of food grade plastic with custom removable caps.  30K may sound like a lot, but when it comes to what we are doing, it's actually a very fair estimation of what we will need to make this a reality.

But wait, isn't that just two shot glasses glued together with a hole drilled in the middle?

If it was that simple, we probably wouldn't need to be raising funds.  There's actually a lot more to the Shot Timer and Beer Timer than you'd probably think.  Between vacuums and fluid dynamics, it's just not that simple.  And just so you know, we tried just gluing two shot glasses together and drilling a hole before we figured out how complicated our quest would be.  Take a look at our final design below for a single piece model and it might make more sense as to why we need the kind of funds we're trying to raise.

The Design Story

Since our idea started with a Scattegories timer, we decided to try and use it as our initial prototype. After taking a few quarter-size shots, we quickly learned we needed something a little bigger.

1. Materials: As amateur inventors, we feel the best materials for a prototype come from the kitchen (or, perhaps, the garage).  The materials for the Beer Timer came quickly as we paired two plastic pilsner cups with two food storage container lids.  Finding lids to match the shot glasses, however, required a bit more effort. After several trips to the hardware store, the spice aisle at our local grocer, and a few manufacturing contacts overseas, we finally found a set of lids that fit the newly delivered plastic shot glasses we ordered online.

2. Assembly: Back to the hardware store for some Bondo and drill bits. After a little assembly, we had something we thought would work.  This step was simple, until we filled up the shot glass and put the lids on. We inadvertently created a closed system (vacuum) and the liquid would not drain no matter how massive we made the drain hole. Fluid dynamics and physics - definitely not our area of expertise.  At that point, we realized we needed some help.

3. Call in the Calvary: After consulting with a few mechanical engineers we were able to devise a short-term solution and a long-term design plan that got rid of the vacuum and allowed the fluid to drain correctly.

4. Voila: By adding an air hole in the lid of the top chamber and an air hole in the side of the bottom chamber, we were able to eliminate the vacuum,  and we finally had our first prototype. Based on this model, we created a concrete design plan. The final product will be based on the design below and will be manufactured out of food-safe acrylic.

Manufacturing Plan

The Shot Timer and Beer Timer are prototypes only at the moment, so we have to make it a reality for the masses by investing in manufacturing tools and materials. We will use a portion of the funds to ready the design for mass production. The remaining funds will go towards materials costs and production labor. We are currently reviewing potential manufacturing partners in North America and Asia.

Here is a breakdown of our target time-line based on production occurring in Asia (note, the schedule will be shortened by approximately 6 weeks if we are able to secure a suitable manufacturing partner in North America):

June: Complete manufacturing designs and secure a manufacturing partner

July: Complete the first molds

August: Receive first production samples and adjust as needed

Mid-August: Finalize design and approve for production (both products and packaging)

September: Begin production (approx. 90 days until landed depending on factory schedules and clearing customs)

Mid-December: All orders shipped to kickstarter supporters

Risks and challenges

First, the Shot Timer is actually a bit more complicated than you might imagine, so ensuring the design and mold of a stable, mass producible, and fully functional version will be challenging.

Second, we're dealing with alcohol, which, for some, is controversial. You can fill in the blanks here. We imagine we'll have some haters, but we can't win 'em all, even if we are the best game players and inventors of all time.

Third, finding a reliable manufacturer for the product will require a lot of research and effort. However, between both of our backgrounds and contacts, we've made some headway in this world and have already started the process.

We wouldn't be here if we didn't think these challenges were entirely surmountable. And we plan to put in the time and effort to ensure just that!
