Gettysburg Story: Happy Holidays + New Expanded Edition

Friends and Fans,

Happy Holidays! I hope 2014 has been good to you. The Gettysburg Story continues to roll along. We've just finished a new Expanded Edition. Thanks to MPT the original film has broadcast to over 85% of the country on American Public Television. Gettysburg's historic downtown Majestic Theater ran the film nightly during the summer months again this year. In the spirit of aeronaut Thaddeus Lowe, The Gettysburg Story partnered with the new Heritage Center to launch a tethered balloon to allow visitors to see the surrounding battlefield like never before. Folks that rode the balloon seemed to love it, some others not so much. Mother Nature was certainly in the latter group, ultimately grounding the balloon in September.

I've worked on several other film projects including shooting footage with actor Stephen Lang in Afghanistan at Bagram and a Forward Operating Base as well as in the Middle East and onboard the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) nuclear aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf. We even tail-hooked onto the deck. It will be part the film version of Beyond Glory, SLang's one-man show about 8 Medal of Honor recipients. I'm also beginning a film project with Journey Through Hallowed Ground, telling the story of the unparalleled history in the National Heritage Area running from Gettysburg, PA., through Maryland and Harpers Ferry, W.VA., to Thomas Jefferson's Monticello in Charlottesville, VA.

Finally, on June 23 at 12:12 am, my wife Heather and I welcomed our first child - Lincoln Ross Boritt. Around the neighborhood they call him 'lil Prez. He's almost 6 months old now. Picture below...

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and best in the New Year, Thank you for your support and as always please join us and share with your friends.

Expanded Edition - Outtakes Menu

Since we first premiered The Gettysburg Story in June of last year, folks have been asking to see more. As a filmmaker, perhaps the highest compliment an audience can give your work is to say "it's too short." We've been promising we'd release a bunch of the footage that we left on the cutting room floor - or edit system hard drive - as the case may be. Finally, after months of work with editor Ira Meistrich, we are releasing The Gettysburg Story: Expanded Edition Double DVD. This new Expanded Edition Double DVD set includes over 3 hours of new material for the true Gettysburg aficionado. Included are Outtakes featuring over 2½ hours of beautiful battlefield imagery filmed from aerial drones, helicopters, motion-control time-lapse rigs. There is no narration - just music and place names. You can watch the Outtakes in the chronology of the battle or via battlefield geography using the map menu. Also included is 'Making The Gettysburg Story', a 53 minute film which takes you behind-the-scenes to see how the groundbreaking project was created. There is also other bonus materials along with the original hour long film. This is for folks who want to see as much of Gettysburg as possible.

New From Gabor Boritt: The Will of God Prevails: Meditations on God and the Gettysburg Address

My dad Gabor Boritt has just released a new book - The Will of God Prevails: Meditations on God and the Gettysburg Address. Abraham Lincoln belongs to Everywoman and Everyman, and sometimes it seems that everyone puts words into Lincoln's mouth-words that people wish Lincoln had uttered. Not in this book. Every quotation here came from Lincoln's writings. Although they are not in strict chronological order, every quotation comes from original Lincoln manuscripts and documents, and every effort was made to keep their meaning. Many believe that readers of all ages will find a powerful message in Lincoln's words. Works by Abraham Lincoln Illustrations by Sam Fink and Wendy Allen Compiled & Edited by Gabor Boritt

It's perfect for newcomers and students. The companion self-guided Auto Tour take visitors around the actual battlefield - dramatically telling the story at the very place that events took place. The Gettysburg Story was created by filmmaker Jake Boritt, based on works by historian Gabor Boritt and narrated by Stephen Lang (Avatar, Gettysburg).

Free Educators' Guide presented by The Civil War Trust

Many teachers use The Gettysburg Story in the classroom and as preparation for visits to the battlefield. This educators' guide contains 7 Common core- aligned activities that augment and enhance the historical content of the film for students in grades 6-12. The activities are independent of each other, and you may choose one some, or all to present along with the film.

2013 so far
It's been a wonderful whirlwind of a year so far for the Gettysburg Story project. It started with our Kickstarter crowd funding campaign in the spring. Our 500+ backers propelled us forward. The film premiered in June at The Gettysburg Festival before over 600 audience members. In July the battle sesquicentennial drew nearly a quarter-million people to our small town in a few days. Our film screened to a full house at the Gettysburg Foundation's Sacred Trust in the National Park Visitor Center, at the Gettysburg College Civil War Institute, and as part of the Seminary Ridge Museum grand opening. Throughout July Gettysburg's Majestic Cinema ran the film - extending the run twice to meet demand. Our film had a special screening at the United States Capitol. In the audience Senator Majority Whip Richard Durbin mouthed the words to the Gettyburg Address, the final scene of the film. Screenings continued with events for Lancaster's Civil War Round Table, at Cornell University and, presented by Journey Through Hallowed Ground at the Middleburg Film Festival and the Virginia Film Festival before 400+ people at Charlottesville's historic Paramount Theater.

Kickstarter Backers
Once again thanks to all our backers on Kickstarter and beyond. In July we sent hundreds of packages to our supporters who had entered their address. We've been so busy preparing for the national broadcast we still need to send out a couple items that we are waiting to arrive. These final items will be coming in the next few weeks - I apologize for the delay. If you are a backer and have not received any rewards please send an email to with the proper shipping address and your reward level.

Beyond Glory Play and New Film When not screening The Gettysburg Story I've spent much of the last month crisscrossing the country with Stephen Lang as he performs his one man play Beyond Glory based on Larry Smith's book. Lang portrays 8 Medal of Honor winners. In January we travel overseas with the Department of Defense to bring the film to troops in Afghanistan, Bahrain, Djibouti and other locations. Stay tuned as the film progresses.

If you are interested in setting up a screening of The Gettysburg Story please contact us at

Thank you again for your support for The Gettysburg Story. This project would not have happened without you and all of our backers. And be "dedicated here to the unfinished work...that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."
