About this project

Our Project

"The documentary shows me candidly as no one has. Eduardo Montes-Bradley brought an intimacy to the screen that surprised even me."  — Julian Bond

This is an enlightening portrait of social activist Julian Bond, who in this film traces his roots back to slavery. A leader in the Civil Rights Movement, Julian Bond was among the founders of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), one of the leaders of the March on Washington in 1963, a legislator in Georgia for twenty years and chairman of the NAACP. Now in his seventies, Julian recalls what it was like to grow up in the segregated south where his parents’ belief in hard work and education lifted the family out of what he describes as an apartheid system. Julian Bond’s recollections take us through decades of American history, as society was evolving to allow more opportunity to African Americans.

Where We Stand Today

Principal photography concluded with a walk-through Lincoln Memorial with  Julian Bond as he recalled the March on Washington almost half a century before. We have work consistently in the reconstruction of Mr. Bond´s timeline, family ties, genealogical background and we found some amazing footage and photographs to illustrate what turn out to be an outstanding newsreel from the times of Reconstruction to the presidency of Barack Obama.

With your help, "Julian Bond" will premier at the upcoming 25th Anniversary edition of the Virginia Film Festival this November. Moreover, and we have secure distribution to schools, colleges, libraries, prisons, non-profit organizations, museums, and film festivals through one of the most reputable distributors in the educational market: Filmakers Library from New York, an imprint of Alexander Street Press. However, "Julian Bond" will not be made available to the general audience for the next five years due to customary restrictions imposed by the distributors. The film will first reach the institutions, when that window opens you would have the opportunity to purchase a DVD, but not until then.

One special moments on the film

As Julian elaborates on his relationship with the past, many distinguish figures emerge: Paul Robeson, Albert Einstein, Malcom X, Lyndon Johnson. In the following segment Julian Bond recalls his first encounter with Langston Hughes in Georgia revealing himself as an early poet.

Why do we need your support

We need your support to pay for music licensing fees, for the rights to use those photographs, and film archive which is not in Public Domain or that has not been donated. For instance, the photograph of Julian Bond by Richard Avedon is reproduced in the film with permission of The Richard Avedon Foundation. However, that is an exception to the rule: Images cost money. we also need to pay the sound studio for the final mix and there is a small amount owed in salaries to researches, editors, and crew. Yes, we need YOU.

Why help us make this movie?

We believe it’s of the outmost importance to preserve on film Julian Bond´s family memories going back to the days of his great-grandmother Jane Arthur Bond. Bond embodies a tradition of scholars and educators living in a time of extraordinary social transformations. His account of the facts leading to the Civil Rights Movements and to the election of Barack Obama in 2008 helps to understand a process endured by generations of committed men and woman.

This film portraits the man who's extraordinary life experience will serve as an example for generations to come.
