White elephants roam the earth, harassing partygoers all year long to play their elephant party games.
White elephants are dangerous because they lure their prey with promises of good gifts, gather them together, lull them to sleep, and then trample on their dreams. Leaving them with nothing more than a lasting memory of false hopes.
Not only do they trample all of our dreams they also trample on the innocent reputations of all other endangered Elephants worldwide.
We were once silent victims of the white elephant infestation – but decided to take action. We realized that the white elephant has no natural predators – so we created one.
We have genetically engineered the Janx—a jaguar-lynx hybrid, designed as the perfect predator, with hopes of releasing it into the wild to control the overpopulation of white elephants. Unlike the white elephant, the Janx is a real party animal.
JANX™ is a party game for 4 to 30 players, reminiscent of the classic white elephant gift exchange game—but one that is actually fun. We need your help to release JANX™ into the wild.
Rehabilitating the Party Ecosystem
The white elephant is an apex omnivore, and its overpopulation has destabilized the party-ecosystem. Herds are an epidemic, trampling on fun in living rooms across the globe. Left with no other options, hosts resign themselves to believing, "well, a white elephant gift exchange might be fine." No, it might not.
Educate yourself on the dangers of the White Elephant. In turn, you might have actual fun, throw a positively memorable party, or receive a genuinely good gift!
The release of the Janx is the most critical and stabilizing part of the elephant depopulation project. The Janx brings value back to the gift exchange party ecosystem through:
• Conservation of Engagement—Partygoers stay involved, interested, and engaged the entire time they exchange gifts
• Promotion of Sustainability—Fun is a precious resource. The white elephant drains its environment of fun, but the Janx ensures there will be more fun for future generations
• Reappropriation of Resources—Being a good steward of our time and resources makes for a healthier environment in niche gaming biomes
• Restoration of Ecological Health—In a healthy system, the predator winnows the weakest prey to make the ecosystem stronger over time. With the Janx, only the best gift exchanges will survive
Releasing JANX™ into the WILD — Your Living Room
COMPONENTS: JANX™ comes with 90 cards—30 Number Cards and 60 Unique Action Cards. Number Cards are used to determine player order. Action Cards grant players abilities, control, and modify game rules during the game.
PARTY PREPARATION: A successful game of JANX™ requires the host to do a bit of preparation ahead of time so that everyone has a good time. The host must decide and tell the guests the following about the gifts they are bringing:
- The price range for the gifts. (e.g, $15–$20 dollars in value)
- The nature of the gifts. (e.g, store-bought, new, used, hand-made, two-part, size)
- Any theme you would like the gifts to have. (e.g., edible, gender-specific, hobby, games)
Janx encourages the giving of gifts that you would also like to receive.
ACTION CARDS: The host will then need to think about which Action Cards to include, for your specific group of people, in order to assemble the Action Deck. This will ensure your game of JANX™ and your party a WILD success.
Play at Anytime cards—If you are fortunate enough to be dealt a card with the red bar on its left side, guess what—you can play it at anytime! You don't even have to be holding a gift or wait for a turn!
Some cards may cause Janxy chain reactions.
NUMBER CARDS: Number Cards are kept secret by players until their turns. Some actions may attach a special ability to a number– so whoever holds that number will have a special power throughout the game– It is also possible that Number Cards can be exchanged, and along with them– all their special abilities.
SET-UP: Set up a table, a central location, or an easily accessible location where players can set their gifts upon arrival and reach them again when playing JANX™. This is the Oasis.
DEAL: One Number Card and 2–4 Action Cards to each player (the amount of Action Cards dealt to each player will depend on how you make the Action Deck, how many people are attending, how long you want the game to last, whether you are adding multiple games together to duplicate cards, and how many stretch goals are reached in this Kickstarter campaign—with enough support, we have some amazing surprises in store for you!)

Risks and challenges
The JANX™ Kickstarter Campaign is effectively a card game publication and distribution project. As such, this game publication project is relatively simple compared to others in the same industry. Nonetheless, we have brought to bear a fairly detailed financial analysis to every aspect of this project (right down to the weight of the staples in the rulebook as affecting the cost of shipping and fulfillment).
After the Kickstarter funds clear (assuming a successful campaign), we will make a final determination of manufacturers based on the several quotes we have already received, queue maritime freight services through the freight forwarder we have chosen, and confirm fulfillment. We will immediately set aside proper funds for all applicable taxes with buffers for overages on expenses, as built into our financial model. We will then work with the manufacturer to ensure the design is proofed correctly and confirm production, and then confirm logistics.
We are exceptionally confident we will deliver as promised.
Nevertheless the following risks and challenges apply:
Although each of the members of BorderTown, LLC runs his own business(es), this is BorderTown's first Kickstarter Campaign (and the first campaign for any of us individually).
None of us have released a consumer product before; however, one of the members of BorderTown has experience as a product planning analyst for a large scale, highly technical manufacturing company.
We are putting finishing touches on card language and graphic design; that said, the game is complete (we have playtested JANX™ and it is no longer in development). No more cards need to be designed or tested. We plan and expect to be completely done with the final tweaks before the Kickstarter campaign ends so that the files are ready to send to the manufacturer when funds clear. Some of the card language, titles, or types may be slightly different. The graphics used in this campaign are extremely close to the final product design, but some of the cards you see may be changed in final production.
We are having the game manufactured in China. Chinese manufacturing of paperboard-based products is typically reliable and inexpensive. Furthemore, one of the BorderTown members has direct contacts to executives of well-known game companies, and we have sought their expertise and recommendations with respect to sourcing reliable manufacturers and contacts in China to avoid problems. However, problems associated with manufacturing and ocean-going maritime freight may still occur.
Our current projection for fulfillment to backers is September 2018, but because of reliance on third-parties, we cannot guarantee delivery dates. Although our projected delivery date assumes unexpected delays, such unexpected delays are typical even where the designers and publisher have acted in a reasonably diligent fashion. We will do our best to fulfill as expected and nevertheless keep you up to date with timely communications.
We may ship any backer rewards to which you are entitled to the wrong address, if you provide us incorrect contact information or if you change addresses and fail to update us with such correct information.
By pledging to this Kickstarter campaign, you acknowledge that the final product constituting the primary part of any backer reward, namely one or more copies of JANX™, may look different from how it was represented in this campaign or different from your expectations. Although we do not expect or plan for the JANX™ concept to materially change, the content of JANX™ is subject to ongoing edits and emendations in our discretion.
We will send you electronic notification via your Kickstarter account email address within 10 weeks after the campaign has ended requesting your shipping address and any other relevant information necessary to fulfill backer rewards to which you are entitled. You agree that you will respond to us within 10 weeks thereafter but that if you do not respond within 10 weeks, we are deemed to have fulfilled our obligations to you for your pledge. Once the Kickstarter campaign has funded, you may not cancel your pledge for any reason except our material nonperformance. If we fail to materially perform our promises to you pursuant to this Kickstarter campaign, we will refund your pledge in full and you agree that such refund will be your sole legal or equitable remedy against BorderTown, LLC, its members, managers, agents, representatives, successors, and assigns.
